The World's Most Relaxing Soup (1 Viewer)

I've given this a lot of thought. Problem for me is I prefer fresh, forward, bold flavors. So it's not in my wheelhouse.

First off, a cream soup or a booth based soup? The purity of the broth based vs the comfort of the cream.

Meat or vegetarian?

I think maybe use the broth and cchicken based, the timeless healing liquid, but soften it up with arborio, the creamy rice used for risotto.

Final answer:  chicken and rice (arborio)

I literally describe this soup as "a hug in a bowl". It’s an off-menu order in a little Italian restaurant in Mill Valley, CA and it’s just like my Nana used to make back in the day (xmas day was her birthday as well so appropriate for me to be writing about this today. RIP Nana)

pastina in brodo

tiny pasta in a simple broth. Tiny drops of oil so it slides right down. Almost makes me want to be sick so I can ask for this soup to be made. A "hug in a bowl" for real.

My mom always made this from scratch when one of us was sick. Had egg in it too

Straciatella

Stracciatella alla romana is traditionally prepared by beating eggs and mixing in grated parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, nutmeg, lemon zest, and sometimes semolina; this mixture is then gently drizzled into boiling meat broth, while stirring so as to produce little shreds ("stracciatelle") of cooked egg in the soup.[3] The resulting soup can be served in bowls containing a few thin slices of toasted bread, with additional parmesan grated on top.[2]

eating pho is like shouting into a canyon - the echo of all that is human surrounds you. with charred veggies & a whole brisket having fought each other over 12 hours for broth supremacy and the freshness of the sprouts & scallions & basil & lime & carpaccio of beef, it's just great pho-king phood!

2nd place: green chile stew. those who don't think a chile pepper-based soup can be relaxing havent had the right bowl of this. the right kind of green, cooked well is relaxing the way bourbon is relaxing - a bracing splash, then an all-encompassing glow by which to sink into the barcalounger of one's soul

This reminds me of posole. Subtle, yet addicting. I always as lots of hatch Chili's

Pasta Fagioli is about as comfort food as you can get. Simple rustic though. Not all hopped up with extra ingredients like Olive Garden or something.

clam chowder with heavy cream.

green chile stew is an excellent choice

split pea from a hambone

pork based ramen with egg

hot and sour soup

posole

miso soup

before i left Albq, i was working on a soup equivalent of mole. it started from adding to my squash/ancho/turkey soup and i was trying pineapples & plantains & mexican chocolate & ground pistachio as thickener & many other things (and topped w flavor-roasted pepitas, of course) but the lack of good ingredients here in VT halted my progress.

I make a mean chicken noodle soup. Easily my favorite choice when it comes to soup.

Others:

Cream of mushroom

Chicken & dumplings

Creamy potato with bacon

Zuppa Toscana

I love soup.

ETA: Egg drop soup

French Onion

Yes. Great call! Nana would do it without an egg, but my mom (still!) adds the egg. visiting the parents tomorrow for a few days. Might have to put in a Pastina request! :)

I have had that soup at that restaurant in Mill Valley..How cool

Zuppa Toscana, which I like so much I'll fess up to eating it at the Olive Garden.
It is a pain to make it at home. Give it a shot though, tastes just like OG.

ETA: I have my own recipe, which is essentially a copycat. If you want it, you got it. If you find something on the innnnnernets, just use good bacon. Not the fake #### some say.

What’s the name of the restaurant?

also, albondigas soup is the greatest

French onion with a cheesy crouton
Too much work to eat to be the most relaxing soup. Too much sticky cheese, sometimes it all will want to come off together so you have to try to cut it a bit which isn't always the easiest with a spoon.

Most relaxing is probably tomato soup- a nice thick creamy bowl that feels like being a kid again. That or turkey noodle soup because of the tryptophan.

Tom Yum Goong FTW

ETA: Pho and Ramen battling for second place

Btw, a really good pea soup can soothe the soul...

added bonus is the relaxing joy of knowing you’ll be able to carpetbomb the entire house at will for the next few hours.

Growing up always had this with a grilled cheese sandwich.

A well-seasoned tomato soup with a grilled cheese for dunking.
Indulging a childhood mania of mine, my mother would often add a small bowl of vanilla ice cream to my tomato soup/grillcheez lunches so i could perform the magic trick of changing my ice cream from vanilla to 'strawberry' with the last coupla spoonsful of soup

Confabulation, imo.

But, you may have stumbled on to something.

I'm pretty open minded on this front.

Have you been able to transform any other foods since then?

Will hang up & listen now.
