Rams Sign 3rd Round Pick Jonathan Wade

Wade, Rams reach contract terms

By Bill Coats

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

06/28/2007

A second Rams draft pick has agreed to contract terms. Cornerback Jonathan Wade, a third-round selection (No. 84 overall) from Tennessee, received a three-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Does this three year deal cause problems for other teams looking to sign their third round picks to 4 year deals? I am thinking specifically of the Bills and Trent Edwards. I could see the Bills wanting a 4 year deal, and Edwards and his agent wanting a 3 year deal. With JP Losman poentially taking another step toward being a solid NFL starter the Bills will barely have enough time to develop a guy like Edwards no?

On the other hand if Edwards sits behind JP for a couple of years and sees he may not be able to supplant Losman, he gets an short wait to free agency.

First day QBs usually get longer contracts due to playing the hardest position to learn in the NFL. Teams don't want to spend 2-3 years developing a QB and then having them leave via FA. I suppose the same goes for most players, but the hardest thing to do in the NFL is find a franchise QB.

How often does a 3rd-rounder hold out? It seems to me that's pretty much for 1st-rounders and 2nd-rounders who think they should have been 1st-rounders.

I think a clarification needs to be made to understand the issue here.

3-years means you are eligible for RFA in Year 4.

4-years means you're giving up that RFA option.

It doesn't matter re 3 or 4 when going from 3 to 4.

More often than not the player is with that same team in year 4. IIRC (NFLPA related article around CBA time) the players biggest concern is going for that next contract or even getting one.

The average career is done then.

The ones that continue to play want a sizable contract a "prime of my playing career" contract.

The next one, after year 4, that's the big deal right there.

Players become restricted free agents when they complete three accrued seasons and their contract expires.
IMO (not fact, feel free to look up of course) most of those guys with 3 accrued seasons in 3 years are with the team their 4th. A good amount also don't have 3 accrued seasons in 3 yearsETA at this point in 2007 88 restricted free agents signed with their own team while 4 signed with new teams
