I grew up on that street, and my mom still lives there and she still thinks it safe. <_<
It is not safe anywhere in Detroit other than being at a Tiger, Lion or Redwing game in the downtown area. There is no other part of Detroit I would even go to.

never can trust these black guys, especially black cops. they'll just pull a guy out of his suv and beat him senseless in the street in front of dozens of people.

thank god we have the american justice system to make things right http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Charges-Set-to-Be-Reduced-for-Undercover-NYPD-Cop-in-Biker-Beating-236791201.html

i'm assuming these were black guys doing the beating.. i don't even have to watch the video
Your post is ridiculous.

That area has gone to hell. Is that 48205? Was surprised that area has the highest crime rate in the city, but I guess it also still is mostly populated. I grew up on exactly the opposite side of the city, I only know that part of the city from when I worked there a few times. I did go sledding at Balduck Park when I was a kid a few times, I always remember that area being very clean and orderly.
48224. My paper route was Balfour, McKinney, and Somerset from Morang to Moross.

My mom lives closer to Moross than Morang and it is a little better but not by much. After my dad passed we told her she needs to get the #### out of there. So she bought a place closer by me yr and half a go, but has no motivation or I dont know what the problem is but she still lives on McKinney

My grandparents lived across from Balduck, and Uncle lives there now. great tobaggoning there when I was a kid. That area was where the police and firefighters lived, and is still pretty decent as a lot of them still live there.

There are a couple decent spots still around. There has been a bog hipster movement into the city, and some of the older places are still ok, but 95% is garbage,.

It was not completely ridiculous. Gang/Mob mentality can cause people to behave worse than normal no matter what race is involved. But it is epidemic in the inner cities.

Seems like everything west of Kelly, east of Van Dyke, and north of Houston-Whittier has taken a precipitous fall. I worked some murders on the eastside but nothing near Balduck Park, and I don't think anything east of Kelly. Lots of stuff just north of Houston-Whittier though, I remember a double on Seymour where the guys were killed execution style in the backyard naked in the winter. Whoever did it had a size 18 shoe, yet no one saw anything.

I spend time in Springwells and Warrendale when I'm back, but I grew up in Franklin Park. My Mom's family is from eastside, but down around Forrest and McClellan. My great uncle is my only family member still living in the city, he refuses to leave. I guess your mom is the same way, those older Detroiters are as stubborn as they come.

Stupid story, too many people in that city just standing around waiting for trouble.

She, her brother and sister set up a GoFundMe page for their father, who they say doesn't have insurance. Donations have exceed $115,000.
Shouldn't everyone have insurance available now? Am I missing something?
Seriously. I don't get this.
Probably talked out of it by some concerned politician who didn't want his healthcare taken over by Obummer. Now he can go broke but hey he has FREEDOM!
His daughter was on the radio today and only mentioned that he hadn't applied for Obamacare.

dumbest part is she bough a really nice condo close to us, she just wont move. Very disheartening for me, as I try to help and nothing every gets gone then I get mad at her lack of effort so I have just stayed away from trying to help.

Hard to move people out of houses they've lived in for 30 or 40 years. My Grandpa wouldn't move out of the Greenfield and Fenkell area, and that area was terrible as far back as the 70s. When he died my Grandma got moved out pretty soon after, there were already a lot of break-ins around there and the closest relative lived in Livonia.

Bottom line is if she is still able to take care of herself and she's happy there, then there isn't a lot you can do. Can't imagine the house is worth a whole lot and at least she's close to civilization (Harper Woods) which is comforting I guess. How are her neighbors? Still folks there from the old days?

Intimate neighbors are OK. One has been there about 15 years now, and handful of others still around. Other one next door has moved out but has not sold the house yet (wish she would at least do this) Most however moved out years ago.

The 17 year old arrested has been in and out of juvenile his whole life and was deemed incorrigible So life in prison was going to be his end result. It was just when it was going to happen.

I'm not going to get into this conversation here as I've said my peace among Detroiters already.

If you want to read some really over-the-top racist stuff though, I suggest you check the comments out here.

I actually went through all of them and even read one of the books one of the Aryan Nation guys recommended. I think that I'm way too hard on some people around here sometimes, even the most idiotic posters on this board would have posted some of the more enlightening comments below that story. The actual crime itself was utterly disgusting, the comments are almost as bad.

We haven't come nearly as far as we think.
Many of thecomments posted after the story are utterly disgusting.
