Thomas Jones/Leon Washington (1 Viewer)

Leon Washington received more touches than Thomas Jones with the first team in this evening's pre-season game against the Skins.

I thought I would start a thread to collect intel on the Jets RB situation.

Other than that he has looked good in training camp, have there been any indications that Washington could start the year, or that the Jets could go to a true RBBC? What are the coaches saying?

Week 3 is always the indicator of who the starters are. I wouldn't worry about Washington getting the start and more touches in game 2.

Thomas Jones is the man for the Jets.

agreed as a NY homer washington has heart but not the size to threaten jones with the starting position but would handcuff without a doubt for injury situation

Not so sure about that. Neon Leon has a very similar build to Brian Westbrook. I read an article that said that this offseason he did a lot of weight training on his legs and gained some needed bulk there.TJ is a good RB but Leon will definitely nip at his heels for as long as they healthy and on the same team. Don't be shocked to see Leon take 40%+ of the touches when you include receptions and returns.

As a homer who follows the team fairly closely, I think Leon simply has more talent. I'm fairly bullish on him, and I really think Leon outscoring Jones this year is not a reach. A outright bargain at where he's going in drafts.

Plus, if Mangini has shown anything, it's that nobody has a lock on any position (which will change with Brett, but that will be the sole exception.) I would expect Leon to get plenty of touches, and maybe even supplant Jones as the starter if Jones slips even a little.

I was really surprised to see Jones check into the game after Washington had a series. I think we'd be remiss not to take a serious note of that.

Perhaps bringing in Musa Smith and Jesse Chatman was not at all an indication of concern with Washington as the primary backup, but rather a concern with Jones remaining effective at this stage in his career?

I have had Leon on my underrated list for sometime now. Mangini is not dumb. He realizes the danger Leon possesses with the ball in his hands and the JETS actaully named Leon thier MVP last season. I don't think Leon will be the starting RB, but by no means is T. Jones a lock for 300 carries either. This is definitely something to keep a close eye on for sure. Leon is not just a cop back either. He can run with power as indicated by a couple of his carries this evening.

Thanks for the info guys - I was buying into Leon only being change of pace ...had no idea he was voted MVP last year. I still feel really good about him - but this is making me wonder alot about making him a 4th rd selection.

I don't mind using a roster spot on Washington as a handcuff, or even Washington spelling Jones on third downs. Or even, frankly, Washington gaining the starting job around week 9 or 10.

My biggest concern is that the team goes to a pure RBBC, and we have to deal with a situation akin to Addai/Rhodes circa 2006. Other than the touches given to Washington in the second preseason game, any indication of that? Is Mangini being tight lipped?

When was the last time a 5'8" RB was a starter in the NFL? I think its very unlikely Leon is much of a threat to Thomas Jones carries.

This is the correct answer. Otherwise, a heck of a lot of starters in the league lost their job this week.

Addai finished 12th among RB's in PPR in 2006, so RBBC can sometimes produce an effective RB for fantasy football. I was shocked to see Washington in on the first series for the Jets and think this merits close attention. If Washington can get at least 40% of the touches in this backfield, he will be a useful back this year as a flex or bye week starter. If he can get a bigger share of the workload, I think he'll be an RB2.

Consider that Washington was reported to be 5'8" in an article dated July 2008 (http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/07/standout_ny_jets_running_back.html). That puts him at a BMI of 30.7 which is consistent with that of the successful backs in this league. The biggest question for me is whether Washington can retain his effectiveness at a larger weight. Also, the Jets continue to use him on kick returns, which suggests they're not counting on him to shoulder a heavy load on offense. Still, the Jets homers seem to consistently pimp this guy, and I've seen nothing to cause me to disagree.

If the Jets are going anywhere this year, I think Jones carries the load.

If they're out of it by week 10 like every true Dolphins fan always hopes for the Jets, I could see Washington get a lot of work at the end of the year to see if he does have the durability. Jones is a good enough and proven enough back to limit Washington to pace changing duties given what has to be durability concerns due to size. If it were Chatman or Washington, it would be a different equation.

Mangini and his OC Shcotty will use whichever RB they feel offers the best matchup, or mismatch against that week's opponent, period. It will be RBBC, but who gets the most touches will change from one week to the next.

This is how they did it last year, but the question now, is how does Farve change that mix? Did Leon get the start because of the opponent, or because of Farve? Does Washington better suit a Farve offense? Or was it because the OC thought that a T Jones power running game against the Washington D would be less effective?

Mangini is STILL a BB disciple. Look at NE and Moroney last year.... some weeks a feature back, some weeks it was Faulk. Expect the same from the Jets RBBC formula this year. Get Jones and Washington. Guess correctly which one gets the game plan.... pretty tricky.

Brian Westbrook (5'8")Maurice Jones-Drew (5'8") - not an NFL starter, but certainly a good fantasy RB
Brian Westbrook is listed as 5'10".
Here's a list. Pretty decent I think. :blackdot:Priest Holmes Warrick DunnBarry SandersEmmitt Smith Tiki BarberAnd Brian Westbrook's height was listed at 5'8 @ the combine.

I've meet Westbrook at Eagles training camp a few times and I'm 5'-10" and I was at least a few inches taller. 5'-8" is being generous.
