Thoughts on Cuts Around the League - AFC (1 Viewer)

Note: You'll have to excuse my glee for the Draftguys TV alumni that made the team, we got to know these guys very well this year, and almost none of them were assured roster spots going into camp.

Baltimore - Only two RBs? Either they have a lot of faith in McGahee's knee, or Allen Patrick really stunk it up. Watch the roster moves this week for a clue. Marcus Smith beat out fellow big rookie wideouts Ernie Wheelwright and Justin Harper after being outperformed by them early in camp. I expect one or both to be on the Ravens PS. Three cheers for Draftguys TV alum Jameel McClain, who made the team as an undrafted free agent.

Buffalo - Dwayne Wright's horrendous 4th preseason game put the final nail in his coffin with the Bills, and Draftguys TV alum Xavier Omon made the team as the 3rd RB. WR Steve Johnson (yes, another Draftguys TV alum) made the roster, and he could be a nice deep sleeper to watch in dynasty leagues if Hardy falters.

Cincinnati - How much say did big brother Carson have in the Bungles keeping little brother Jordan as the #3 QB? He definitely did not outperform Jeff Rowe in the preseason. Ive been tracking DeDe Dorsey since he was an offense/defense/special teams superstar at Lindenwood, and he could play a big role in the running game before this season is done. He's the most explosive RB on the roster.

Cleveland - Travis Wilson used up his last chance in Cleveland. He practically had the red carpet to a roster spot rolled out for him with Jurevicius hurt, but inconsistency struck too many times in the preseason games. One of Draftguys TV alum Paul Hubbard and Syndric Steptoe could be starting if Donte Stallworth's hammies act up (they will). Jerome Harrison made the team, but I still think Lawrence Vickers is the true RB3 if Lewis and Wright both go down.

Denver - Do NOT forget about Ryan Torain. Shanny was practically putting him in the hall of fame, and he loves to prove himself right. As soon as you hear Torain is practicing, pick him up if you can afford the roster spot. If you have an extra roster spot early in the season to fill when someone goes down and you're stumped, just stash Torain. Also as crazy as it sounds, Peyton Hillis could figure into the RB situation if injuries strike after making the final 53.

Houston - Steve Slaton is going to get a shot this year, he's the Houston RB to draft late. The leading rusher at the end of the season might not even be on the roster right now. Look for Draftguys TV alum Antwaun Molden to get a shot to start soon if Jacques Reeves doesn't pick up his level of play.

Indianapolis - Only one backup QB? They must really be confident in Peyton's knee. Maybe Dungy is trying his hand at some Belicheckian shenanigans like the Randy Moss episode in the preseason last year. I would still be worried because opposing defenses will go after that knee, even at the expense of a 15 yard penalty. I say, make Peyton uncomfortable early in the game, get him thinking about that knee. Another Draftguys TV undrafted free agent made the final 53 - DT Eric Foster. He's a perfect fit for Indy's scheme.

Jacksonville - I guess Cleo Lemon got things figured out, him making the team was no sure thing a month ago. I'm a little surprised Chauncey Washington made the team. They must be pretty high on him, because Greg Jones is the real RB3. I think Troy Williamson will get his walking papers once Jerry Porter is 100%

Kansas City - This team is probably going to pick up more players cut from other teams than anyone else. Do they really need five RBs? Dantrell Savage could turn into a nice scatback type RB, but I have a feeling he might not last the week on the 53. This team needs a healthy WR in the worst way, they only have three right now.

Miami - John Beck, from second round pick and QB of the future to sweating out final cuts in a little over a year. Maybe Cam Cameron will take him up in Baltimore. I'm a little surprised that the Fins are carrying 4 Rbs, but Patrick Cobbs is a good special teamer. Anthony Armstrong making the team as the WR6 should make the Arena league proud. Another Rashied Davis?

New England - As expected, the team kept 5 RBs, which can't be good for Maroney's fantasy prospects. They also kept 8 wideouts, which will surely be rectified soon. Yet another undrafted free agent Draftguys TV alum made the final 53 - Gary Guyton. Too bad he can't play corner, New England is looking like a juicy passing matchup this year.

New York Jets - Congrats to Draftguys TV alum and sixth round pick Marcus Henry, Chansi Stuckey playing some DB may get him in the lineup sooner than later. Draftguys TV alum Dwight Lowery didn't just make the team, he might start as a rookie.

Oakland - Johnnie Lee Higgins is the de facto WR3, and Todd Watkins is back from the dead as the WR4 - Higgins and Watkins are both good deep threats. I can't imagine what the WR corps would have looked like if Javon Walker had actually retired.

Pittsburgh - Gary Russell makes the team, and he and FB Carey Davis could get some goal line carries after Rashard Mendenhall's troubles. Willie Reid is gone, which means Dallas Baker could become part of the teams long term plans yet, especially with Nate Washington entering free agency next year. OC Bruce Arians likes 3 TE sets, so I wouldnt be surprised to see them pick up a TE this week, although TE's are wanted around the league.

San Diego - Draftguys TV alum Marcus Thomas did not make the cut, but he'll catch on a practice squad somewhere. Malcom Floyd will not go away after a good camp and preseason. I wonder if Charlie Whitehurst is getting to the point that he could be good trade bait after being developed for two years.

Tennessee - Boy, Roydell Williams ankle must have been pretty bad. Lavelle Hawkins has a chance to become this team's WR3 as a rookie if Brandon Jones doesn't become more consistent. I'm surprised the team kept Quinton Ganther, he could be trade bait for an RB needy team.

NFC to come...

From today's SD Union Tribune:
Fifth-rounder Marcus Thomas is the only draft pick that did not make the roster, though he is thought to be a lock for the practice squad.

Other prime candidates for the eight-man practice squad are linebacker Antwaan Applewhite, receiver Gary Banks, safety Tra Battle, running back Eldra Buckley, defensive tackle Lamar Divens and Keith Jackson and guard Brandyn Dombrowski.
They also released Polk, a vet linebacker who I imagine will catch on somewhere. I hope they're able to keep Thomas, Applewhite, Battle and Buckley on the practice squad as I liked what I saw from all of them, though they do need some work. I think Applewhite is the closest to being NFL ready - he'd probably be on the roster of a few teams right now, I hope the Chargers can sneak him through.

It looks like about half or more made it. I know the Lion's absolutely love Felton. He showed nice hands on the TD catch against the Bengals and I am betting he will be involved in the passing game. Of that entire group, the one who really stuck out to me in preseason is the same one who stuck out to me when I watched: Joe Mays. He looks like a real find for the Eagles. :lmao:

The guy everyone liked a year or two ago, then fell out of favor....Brandon Jones might finally be what people expected of him. A friend of mine at a TEN paper says he is almost a different player or different man this year. He's thoroughly impressed. They could have put Roydell on PUP a while back or IR recently.

I hope Ealy latches on somewhere else.

Hawkins kinda bounces side to side. I wonder about that bounce, he might be harder to tackle than some defenders think.

Paul Williams made it despite all his drops

Sorry for quick hijack, who was that Applewhite years ago that was supposedly real good?

As far as the Browns situation at RB goes... Savage said that in the case that Lewis went down Harrison would take 1st and 2nd down carries with Wright in third down situations. No way I see Vickers as a legit RB.

Here is the link: http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=4287...ubCategoryID=26
Well I stand corrected. The last we heard Harrison was on the roster bubble right down to cut day because of his penchant for dancing in the backfield. Wright, while unexciting, is a good lunchpail guy, I would expect him to force more of a committee than Savage made it sound like in his comments. Thanks for the heads up.

The Ravens feel La'Ron McClain (not Jameel, but any relation? :lmao: ) can play some RB if needed. They also signed Marcus Mason, who led all NFL players in rushing during the pre-season, to their practice squad. I think this speaks to the confidence the team has in Ray Rice. :bowtie:

It wouldn't surprise me if they have Rudi Johnson in for a physical either. That's just speculation on my part - no link.

Ah such is life, fortunes turn quicklylink

WR Brandon London, waived by the Giants yesterday, is now a Dolphin after being claimed by Miami. London was about to sign the paperwork to be on the Giants' practice squad when his agent called him to tell him he was an active member of the Dolphins.

That's hysterical because London was joking the other day about going to the Dolphins.

"Everybody in the (Giants') locker room thought I knew some kind of inside info and everything, but I was just saying that I like South Beach joking around," London said. "It's funny how it really happened like that."

The Dolphins have claimed 6-foot-7, 318-pound guard/center Nate Garner and 6-4, 310-pound guard/center Andy Alleman. By doing so, that put the Dolphins at 55 players, or two over the mandated 53-man roster, so they waived AFL standout receiver Anthony Armstrong. One more player needs to be cut today.

Armstrong will most likely be placed on the eight-man practice squad
so things aren't all bad for Armstrong. London was getting raves in Giants camp, and Miami has more opportunity than most WR corps. Good spot for London.Miami the most active picking up table scraps so far.

:thanks:One did play for Texas. I'm not sure if that constitutes "supposedly real good"
Actually didn't Major Applewhite lose his starting job to Chris Simms a few years back at Texas?

As always Sig, great stuff.

As a Jets fan and careful watcher of their work this preseason I think you can bump your estimation of Lowery up - I think it isn't might - I think he WILL start next week. They love the guy and he has played himself into the job.

:thanks:

Major Applewhite.
yeah major that's it, that's the name I couldn't think of, thanks
That would be former Alabama offensive coordinator and current assistant head coach/running backs coach Major Applewhite.

I am a Giant fan (who's favorite AFC team is the Dolphins). London could be a nice weapon, but he fumbled in a bad play and did have one drop after looking really good. I think the Giants don't have many great receivers, but they have a lot of pretty good ones (Steve Smith, Hixon, Maybe even Tyree along with Toomer and Plax) and London was just gone in a numbers game.
