Tic Disorder in child, any experiences? (1 Viewer)

My 7yo has been blinking a lot, rolling his eyes up inside his head, constant coughing and clearing his throat. It happened a few months back and subsided. Doctor said just keep a watch on it, could have been allergies or dry eye or just a small tic he would outgrow. It has recently come back in the past week and is raging. So sad to see. Other kids are noticing and asking him about it. Hoping to see the dr again and possibly get a referral for a neuropsychologist. Don't think it's Tourette's as he doesn't have any vocal outbursts but we're very nervous. Also wondering if chlorine is a factor as he started swimming again and was swimming a lot during the last breakout. Thinking low magnesium maybe? Grasping at straws here. Any insight or experience appreciated!

No idea, but I doubt it would be from pool. It does sound similar to a form of Tourettes. I don't think all TS have vocal outburst. Maybe a similar mild classification. It's weird how it went away and came back though...

There was a thread on here a few years ago from someone with a child experiencing the same symptoms. Good luck

Yeah, it is odd. The excessive blinking never really went away, but it diminished significantly. The rolling of his eyes inside his head had gone away so that's what's disturbing. Thanks for chiming in.

I will dig deeper, thanks. Couldn't find anything but was really hoping this had been discussed before so I could read about similar experiences.

Never saw that old thread but my middle son has facial tics. Some days you barely notice anything, but sometimes you see it. It really got bad last year in school before the end of year tests ( his first time where if you don't pass you have summer school/repeat the grade). He did fine but the anxiety made things worse and being over tired. I noticed them a bit more this week on vacation where there are a ton of other boys staying with us on a multi-family vacation.

We went to a neurologist and checked everything out as others have done and it appears to be just tics no seizures. He is just a really anxious kid and sometimes that anxiety shows itself. Maybe that's why they say kids outgrow them because they mature and don't worry about everything.

HI there,

Thanks for the PM and I will offer what I can to help.

It has been 4 years since the onset of Masons Tics. They were very very aggressive but her never developed any other Tourette symptoms. His was diagnosed as a "benign tic disorder" that is quite common in young children. We were told at the time that most likely her would outgrow the tics. We saw a neurologist, had MRIs and CT scans as well as an allergist. I did take him to the chiro a number of times just to try to relieve some of the stress on his neck/face.

As of today, we have been tic free for about a year. We continue to use the vitamins every day (B6, B50 and a multivitamin with magnesium) Did he outgrow it? I am not sure, but the vitamins could not hurt him.

We found that physical activity seems to help calm the tics down. Stress really ramped them up.

I know here in Ontario, you need to have 2 of the 3 symptoms for a full year to get on the tourettes spectrum. (Facial/Vocal/motor tics), so he never really qualified as a pre-tourettes client.

A question for you....is your son talking ANY medication? Has there been a change in any medication?

I am available here, or by PM if you have any specific questions anytime. When Mason first developed his tics, they were so aggressive and scary to us, it just made us feel helpless. They would go for a few weeks, and then come back more aggressive.

Hang in there.....and all the best to your son!

Sean

Great news! So glad he's been tic free for a year. We saw our pediatrician yesterday and she wrote us a referral for a neurologist. He is not as bad today as he was yesterday. He's on amoxicillin just in case there's something underlying. Blood was drawn and if everything comes back clear we will stop the antibiotic. I am hoping it at least has a placebo effect! He is not on any other medicine. Thanks for the info!

Just out of curiosity, did he ever take Singulair for any breathing issues he may have had?
