Titans = 04' and 05' Chargers? (2 Viewers)

I was just laying out by the pool dozing off and I started to think about how this year's Titans offense had some intriguing similarities to the 2004 Charger's offense that really broke out.

1. Good coach on the hot seat - That year (and it seems every year) Marty Schot. was under pressure to show vast improvement after his team had taken a step back the previous year. This year coach Fisher (who IMO is one of the top 4 or 5 coaches in the nfl today) is seemingly on the hot seat to show vast improvement or else he may be out the door. What this could mean? Vince Young could be put on hold as Fisher needs wins TODAY. He's going to play whoever gives him the best chance to put points on the board, and that, for this year anyway, is Volek.

2. QB who in the past showed glimpses of great potential - In 2003, Brees was coming off a very promising year. But, 03' turned out to be very disappointing and he ended up losing a lot of playing time to a veteran named Doug Flutie. In 2004 however, the Chargers drafted a highly touted rookie QB (Rivers) and Brees spent the entire offseason extremely motivated and dedicated to his craft and his team's playbook. He came out and won the job handily in the preseason, and delivered an incredible year.

Billy Volek showed glimpses of incredible production potential the year before last season. Then, last season, he lost most of his playing time to a veteran (McNair), and when he got a few chances, he was less than stellar. This year, the Titans have drafted a highly touted rookie QB (VY), and reports are that Volek has worked very hard in the offseason with his receivers and learning the playbook of Norm Chow.

3. Talented tight end with potential to break out - Obviously we all know how nasty Antonio Gates is. I am not trying to imply that Ben Troupe = Antonio Gates. That being said, between the amount of looks the tight end gets in Norm Chow's offense, and Ben Troupe's impressive skill set, one could invision Troupe ending up in or near the top 5 tight ends in fantasy.

Obviously the biggest differences are that Drew Brees seems to be more talented than Volek, Gates more talented than Troupe, and a guy that no one can match talent wise in LT (Brown and White should be able to provide a good running attack though). But, that does not mean that this year's Titans can not prove to be very valuable fantasy players. The opportunity is there, and the price on most of the Titan's offensive players is extremely low. It seems to me like a nice low risk/high reward endeavor.

I think LT went on record as saying they were going to make the playoffs.... haven't heard LenDale White say this.

Pretty good comparisons though IMO.

Even have the same management/coach rifts.

As if the media hasn't had anough of a field day on White already... can you imagin if he said something like that!

The Chargers had the best RB and TE in football. I don't see the comparisons between LT and Gates and Brown/White and Troup, etc. Anything is possible though.

Tennessee is actually a very interesting team. I could see them being around in week 8 or 9. I think their defense has improved greatly, plus their offense is right there. Between Chris Brown, Travis Henry and LenDale White, someone is bound to emerge as the go-to RB. I don't think we'll see much of VY at all this season. They absolutely don't want to rush him. Billy Volek could be a big producer this year and I think Ben Troupe will emerge as a top 8 TE, in an already busy TE crowd.

Their first 5 games will tell a lot...
