From the Footballguys News Blogger:

Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese said on Thursday that quarterback Billy Volek is currently considered to be the starting quarterback on the team. "Billy Volek is our starting quarterback as of today," Reese said. "Billy has been wanting to start. This is going to be a great opportunity for Billy. Billy has got some big shoes to step in. It's a golden opportunity for Billy and I'm excited to see it."

Volek's most immediate threat is Kerry Collins. If Collins is not signed, Volek should start most (...if not all) of '06. Unless Volek has a complete meltdown and/or Titans management decides to have an Akili Smith II by playing Young too early, Volek should get 16 starts.

It probably comes down to how the team is doing. If they're playing well and Volek is healthy, VY probably holds the clipboard all year.

If the team falls out of it early, we may see Young in the 2nd half of the season.

Who makes starting assignment decisions in Tennessee ---- Reese or Fisher?
That's exactly what I was thinking. Has Reese flipped his wig? He seems to be making alot of command decisions recently. The drafting of Young before Leinart, wanting Young to be the starter against Houston, now naming Volek as the starter (which we assumed anyway). Shouldn't the coaches be making these calls? Reese hasn't become the owner of the Mavericks has he?

In the other Volek thread, I posted an article in which they said Young would definitely see action this year. When is the key question.

it's the guy being interviewed answerring the question. He's not saying "Volek will start because I said so" but likely replying to a "who is your starter at QB" question.

I've seen something like that. The defenses will have to get used to him too, not just him getting used to the NFL game. Some rookies, very few, "get it" right away. The Titans will want to see if he's one of those precious few. If he rocks in preseason, it might come sooner than expected.

Unfortunately there's no way to tell what QB won't be overwhelmed by the NFL D's first impression.

I see Akili mentioned above. I suppose I could argue the year sitting for Vick didn't do much for him learning how the starter uses his WRs effectively in the passing game. With a Vick comparison here and there re:Young this is my biggest worry about him. Vick had a great arm and well no draft mag thought he would "barely" throw to his WRs. Anyhow, every player is different, yes apparently the Bungles totally goofed with Akili but that's not to say every QB has to sit, see Roth.

Similarly, I'm curious about Alex Smith this year. He sure took his lumps and IMO a healthy Jennings buys him some invaluable time in the pocket. Since most youngsters need more time, Jennings really could be an unspoken big deal in Smith's development.

Seems like Volek and Drew Bennett both may be worth a look in redrafts...and then possibly trade bait mid season if the Titans aren't playing well (since Young may get a shot late in the season)
