Titans tight ends 2025 (1 Viewer)

I didn't get anything out of the OC talking TEs. It was like his mom punished him and he had to talk to the press.
Chig is Chig
Gunnar has had a few nice contested catches. Whyle's been showing up lately. DMR and Odukoya are always good with pads on

@Titans
OC Nick Holz on the TEs behind Chig Okonkwo: Gunnar Helm has done a good job with contested catches, Josh Whyle has been more consistent. DMR and Odukoya show up with the pads on

OC had a radio interview so maybe he just felt it was repetitive. Idk.
Will mention if anything good on radio interview from YT

Gunnar had a toe tap TD and a great diving catch.
DMR had a nice catch where he split the defenders who wound up colliding and a TD too.

No mention of the other TEs

Starting to wonder why Gunner keeps having to make leaping and diving catches.

A scout I follow thinks it's in the Titans best interest to trade Chig.
He noticed the most coaching of the TE group has been for Chig. The staff and specifically TE coach is almost silent by comparison when anyone else is in.

Gunner is getting his hands caught (I don't understand this) on defenders and he's got a get over it. At the LOS or when he makes a cut, NFL players get away with little holds and they know what they're doing.

He said DMR just looks ready. He's a lot better than when he arrived and he's responded great to coaching.

For him, seeing DMR and Whyle working with Gunner has been great. They've got a close group and they're all getting better. Chig walks over for individual drills but those guys are already there. He's not part of the clique and he should be and he should be leading the group too. He said it just looks like this is the time.

He doesn't think there's a good market for TEs and that if people looked it up they'd find it even worse in the middle of camp. He doesn't think they will. He's hoping the TEs have some outings in their personal time and Chig becomes part of the group as he has in previous years.

Coach's regret is a little thing he does about training camp cuts and he says those three DMR, Whyle, Gunner will probably be kept or a big regret. Ya can't manufacture what they've got going on and the talent is there. A coach wants that badly for every group and he thinks keeping most or all the TEs is probably already being discussed.

Lastly he said TEs are a rookie QBs best friend because they'll get after the ball and he's going to make some bad throws. He sees a lot of effort from this group except maybe one (Chig surely) and that isn't gonna be lost on the staff. If the line breaks down, they're already calling plays for the TE right after. This is how you get young QBs to stay confident and mentioned Ertz whole career and how he's essentially been a young QBs BFF his whole career.

Paraphrasing- Radio hosts not happy with TE depth chart but also saying they'd disagree with any ranking whatsoever.
Four TEs running with the ones has to change. Usually two at this point. They need reps. There's a new QB. This won't last past the Tampa game.
Discussion how Ward is also pretty much taking what would have been Levis' snaps and running the twos and the ones.
Guy takes back what he said, fair point.
I've seen every TE run with Boyle. He's fourth string in this? I haven't seen DMR does that put him ahead.
Then about two minutes of how they just don't know on TEs but they do know Ward needs to have "his guy" at TE and Arroyo and Delanie Marcus discussed.

Almost nothing reported of the TEs today.
Whyle made a good catch.

One of the videos of them doing drills has a coach barking at Chig and it seems pretty obvious he's dogging it. Fast dudes can't "take it easy" since they stand out like a sore thumb then.

I've always wondered if the days when little is reported means it's a bad day but that's not been true. Reporters just share what catches their eyes.

Not much today

For preseason, I think blocking will be a big big big deal and there is probably some expectation of considerable success.

Remember the depth chart is kinda questionable right now. If any of the top 4 get in against third string then they had better do well. They do not want to seem like they belong there.

I'll be rooting hard for Odukoya to hopefully get some passes and his pancakes are one of my favorite preseason things. I highly doubt it but it would be so great if he could jump into that top four group. He's a big fan favorite so ...I just root for the guy

Bucs fans want the Titans other TEs.

That's as good a characterization as any to describe the TEs not named Chig. Practice is over and their fans are commenting and want them trading for them.

Callahan has been doing interviews and said they're planning on a lot from Gunner and DMR.
He's mentioned them at least three times.

Chig- not once.
Ward and Chig had a miscommunication wrong route interception during the intrasquad with the Bucs.
I can't tell what it is but it keeps being mentioned. Why that one? What happened?

Pregame shows- there's always one guy super confident Chig is starting and others that have doubts.

I'm telling ya my FF or football watching experience says there's an issue. He should be crystal clear leader heading into year four with all that athleticism.

I don't think the concern goes away unless he rocks early on in the season. Gunner and DMR are looming. Since he shared snaps and starts with Whyle and Whyle's bend doing well for a week, I can't get off the concept that Chig is gone or replaced.

Neither the Titans nor the Bengals use the TE a whole lot in this style offense despite what's said- we all know this for FF- BUT Ward loved Arroyo and has a tendency towards the TE.

I'm still just not touching this situation in FF. Someone has to be a clear starter and I think this year will be a mess and maybe someone is a good DFS play

Chig ran with the ones and when they went two TEs Gunner came in and then three TEs, DMR did.

I thought it was Cincy-ish. We may have our first Titans team that truly uses the 3WR set as it's base like 2000 years after the rest of the league did.

Not much was shared on the TEs during the first day of joint practice with the Falcons.

The Titans came out flat and Chig was one of a whole lot that took the blame himself. Falcons whooped em early. No idea how he did in team work.

Among the subs during the whooping, DMR went in to help right the ship.
(I got nothing on Gunner in team work.)
Whyle did well very late.

During individuals Pitts and Chig did not do well per many reporters. Gunner stirred them up like that's how a TE should be.

Amidst the struggles, WRs weren't coming back and weren't getting open to bail Cam out. DMRs group of he, Oliver, Jahquan, and Restrepo came to the rescue by just being dawgs and battling for every ball.

I think- as I said in WR thread- this is significant. We'll see...

Thomas Dimitroff was quoted last year saying Chig is not it and he said something like that around the draft. I see some quotes retweets and such. He attended last summers intrasquad. I don't think he was there today nor said that today so discard those.
Chig- and the whole starting group- stunk and left Cam out to dry. That's it.

No leaps, just bad day and probably DMR and Whyle got a pat on the back

Chig missed some blocks then made a big catch. Reporter called him TE2. Said he'd be a fun backup, what a sub to put in, but he IS a backup. No one on this offense should make that many mistakes and be able to wipe it away with a nice catch. They wouldn't let WRs do it and surely not backs. He should be pulled quicker.
Reporter said he did not go back in after. Maybe they called it to give him a chance for confidence but he sees significance in him not going back in. Neither DMR nor Gunner had any issues after too

I was live tweeting in two threads.
On occasion the Titans left the huddle with two TEs but put one up wide at WR.
The TEs weren't involved
Then they had a drive for Gunner and he was beastly. They were Falcons backups but it was exciting. He has guys all over him and made catches anyway time and time again. Vibes of famous TEs being smothered. I think four catches and they isolated him and the Falcons couldn't stop it.

Chig can play WR or be traded or I really don't care.

DMR is so fun and tough. I would be thrilled to have Gunner and DMR as the two.

I'll show ya highlights from X but I mean the kid can block and do that? Time to move on.

He has improved a bunch too. I thought DMR was better many times.

One drive and I AM getting carried away but ..
I don't care. I'm tired of missed blocks and not using your bod so ya drop it and... I've had enough Chig

Odukoya is a camp legend of a blocker. He's an international player that they stopped using that tag on.
None of us know why he doesn't play when the RT next to him has been a poor blocker but ...he barely plays offense.
Without question one of the best blocking TEs there is. I've never seen a TE with so many pancake highlights and that's always been a sign of dominance.
I expect he'll knock down some edges in camp and preseason and we'll all say wow and then he won't play much.

His hands seem fine. Not good or great but fine. Some other team that uses two TEs would absolutely love this guy as the grunt blocking TE but teams don't seem to trade for that. Arthur Smith would be downright giddy if he had him.
any chance its a consistency issue?

I don't see the other two posted.
Those two I shared. There's two more. Big boy stuff.

I think it's just the lies or charade NFL OCs do.
Arthur or KOC with Oliver, they've got no problem if the world knows a TE is coming into block and very likely not catching a pass.
Most of the others are kind of pretentious with the whole deception of ooh the TE2 might get it.
Yeah if it's Likely but...ya know what I mean. He's a very good blocker and I saw some typical great blocks tonight too. Years of this

who knows. Each coach has their favourite players or favourite plays and if hes not supposed to be on the field for that play....... guess what happens?

if hes that good at blocking though, you would think they'd try to move him to the O line where he can pancake a whole lot more people

Yeah he's darn good
We had awful tackles for years so that's come up before.
I don't know if there's a language barrier. I've never heard an interview with him I don't think.
Tonight he pushed/drove an edge back at least five yards.
OL gurus and former linemen have shown his clips before.

I don't know how driven he is like would he go play elsewhere or another league?

It'll be interesting to see if Vrabel claims him. He still has a house in Nashville so maybe Vrabes can convince him to do the same?

we had a super talented Lineman on our team, but coach had to sit him cuz, good as he was, he didnt know when to stop. He took wayyyyyy too many penalties.

Practice-
No notes about Chig
Helm with a TD
DMR three catches and TD

No one mentioned depth guys

Helm had a 90 PFF grade in passing game.
His QBs have a perfect rating in preseason when targeting him.
70ish run blocking grade is fine. Better than Chig

Last practice before week three.
Chig did well according to some but others were eh about it.
He had three catches.
Two were the first play of team and 7 on 7. Some took that as "cute" so in their POV he had one catch.

Helm lost a couple big boy catches today

Whyle ran with the ones a bunch. My guess is to see before making a decision on him. He still ran with the third string.

As has been said on the radio, TEs have been involved less n less as camp went on. It's possible we truly do see the Bengals offense and this was our buildup to the first time the Titans TE is...what's the word....extra? Added weapon and not primary?

My issue is some degree of lack of confidence in WRs not named Ridley and how often it is that everyone (staff, players, fans, writers) got whenever a TE made a play. There's a coach determined to run his offense and that excitement tells another story.

The Titans bad tackles have been the biggest issue with their offense and not needing a TE to help would afford a change. Will that happen?

The thing about a two TE offense is that it suits young QBs very very well. Young QBs issues are always about time and timing and their play is 💯 different if they have time. I think it's a common coaching problem like taking the training wheels off

Second week in a row that OC Nick Holz pointed out Gunnar's blocking .
If I scroll thru twitter.
It's DMRs late spring, DMR week one, Gunnar and DMR, then Gunnar.

Remember I said in January and last year- how it's commonly said that the Titans have lost patience with Chig's development as a blocker.

I don't think the Titans have a TE issue.
I don't think they care who the starter is either.
I think they've got their three and if they keep four, then they've got their four.
They know what each does and seem very comfortable.

Today, the season could be 50% Chig, 30% Gunnar, and 20% DMR.
Week one is the Broncos and they've supposedly got a great defense.
The Titans might need DMR and Helm blocking and muscling that defense a lot and Chig is sprinkled in for some potential big pass plays.
The Rams DL might make them do more of the same.
I don't have any concern with the Colts.

I could see this playing out as a sincere share.

I was raised in the northeast so maybe I'm different because of Bavaro and Coates and...but the blocks and tough big boy catches Helm and DMR make are firey. There's a football vibe to it that just feels right like a FB laying some LB out. And Ward needing a panic guy to throw to and make a tough catch too.

I probably have Tackle PTSD if such a thing exists from watching the Titans.

The Titans are a bad team. Chig seems to have staved off the trade rumors and the competition, kudos to him.

I don't foresee it lasting. To me, he doesn't fill the team needs anywhere near as well as Gunnar and DMR

Paste from WR thread same sentiment-
This thread sort of evolved over the years as an alternative to me bumping a zillion player threads and the usefulness of keeping all the same position info together.
Soandso made a great catch in one thread and soandso had a great day in another thread led to some confusing tangents and it just...it was better this way.

In season is different and how we've always done it works great in player threads.
Camp is done.
This thread is done.

I enjoy this. I appreciate FBGs giving me an outlet for this.

I'll post some final thoughts but I don't expect any more news or newsy tweets here

This summer played out about as expected.
Gunnar came on in a big way. How do they get him in with Chig around?
DMR proved to be solid in the classic FF board speak. Well rounded get r done guy.
Whyle was fourth but looks like the guy that started last year. He's fine depth if they want it.
Chig...what hasn't been said? The youngsters are looming.

We're pretty lucky for FF that Arthur isn't coaching this group because they'd all be playing in some 25 percent share of confusion.

This is an odd position in the NFL right now. Several teams are loaded and several are weak. I do guess there will be some TE trades soon. The Titans have good young depth they can trade.

The goal is to be great here. None of them are yet. Us FF folks know darn well how common a regular TE is and the difference between a great one. There's a ton of hope here but (if) no one is there yet.

Bumping this to mention Josh Whyle signed by Green Bay.

I think the Titans should have kept him and waited for an opportunity to trade and if not then so what, he's a good player.

The Packers fans already can't believe how tall he is. 6-7 sometimes listed as 6-8.

Titans told him he needed to step up in a meeting and he did. 16 (also reported as 12 and 13) catches in final two weeks of camp. He was told he more than stepped up and great job. He was real upset he got cut.

His agent got calls from "everybody" but offers didn't follow. He declined Titans PS. His agreement with Packers PS included a discussion that he would leave if an opportunity arises. Pack are loaded at TE.

I had mentioned earlier he was upset about his buddy Levis. He mentioned he was feeling bad for Ridder being cut too.

He praised DMR and Oliver. Said they came in great shape, knew the playbook, and their bodies were transformed. He wants to work out with DMRs trainer next off-season and started the off-season behind him. Whyle said he was in the best shape of his life and didn't look like that.

No comment on Chig trade rumors.
Said weird thing he learned was how many boxes players have stashed.
