Not the most famous writer (not even the most famous writer named Thomas Wolfe!) But he perhaps understood American culture better than anyone else. Probably most well known for  The Right Stuff, his best work was The Bonfire of the Vanities, which, although 30 years old, is arguably THE defining novel of modern times.

I had the pleasure of meeting him once in Las Vegas, and hearing him speak.

I think he was at his best when he wrote non-fiction articles for magazines.  He had a tendency to bloviate which a good editor and a stricter word count could keep in check.

The character Tom Wolfe was one of his finest creations.

“A career in flying was like climbing one of those ancient Babylonian pyramids made up of a dizzying progression of steps and ledges, a ziggurat, a pyramid extraordinarily high and steep; and the idea was to prove at every foot of the way up that pyramid that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff and could move higher and higher and even – ultimately, God willing, one day – that you might be able to join that special few at the very top, that elite who had the capacity to bring tears to men’s eyes, the very Brotherhood of the Right Stuff itself.”

ETA:   108 word sentence

Tom Wolfe is still my favorite journalist. Ever. RIP to greatness and a great man and great writer.

I will never forget Kandy Kolors, Mauve Gloves and Mad Men, Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests and others.

Today is truly a sad day for me. This hurts. RIP to a singular talent.

Heard from an old friend for the first time in about a decade. Was really heartened, yet saddened by Wolfe's passing. He meant a lot to us and I wish him nothing but full grace for his soul upon his death.

I'm going to bump this thread with articles about or by him. He's that important.
