5 - The Band

4- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

3- Aerosmith

2- The Doors

1- the Boss
I thought The Band had Canadian roots?
The Band was mainly made up of Canadians. Levon Helm was the only American. The Band was Canadian-American. Fleetwood Mac is considered British-American since three are British and two are American.
How about the Pretenders?

Talking Heads
As long as we're being Anglophile anal retentives, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell were both English.

Talking Heads

Tom Petty

Springsteen

Aerosmith

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Forget the chili peppers. Better overall than Nirvava imo and I'm a big fan of Nirvana. Easily fit into that 6-10 area.
I try to forget them every day. Then I turn on the radio and hear that tone deaf hemma nemma nemma nonsense.
They dont play RHCP on the Oldies station now do they?
Anthony and Flea are both AARP eligible

Ramones

Parliament/Funkadelic

Talking Heads

Van Halen

The Beach Boys
Sorry, David Byrne, founding member, principal songwriter, and lead singer of the Talking Heads, is Scottish, not American. Looks like Talking Heads are out... as long as we are being anal retentive...

It is terribly lost. He has Metallica on it.
Should be Megadeth instead?
Both deserve each other in Top 5 Drama Queen bands.

BTW, Jason Newsted finally explains why he left Metallica around 30 minutes into this interview:

A poster earlier gave some cred to this thread by posting American bands that didn't just have the usual bass/guitar/drums in it.

Although he should replace Benny Goodman with Chick Webb.

Goodman swung. Glenn Miller not so much.

Well if you're going to go outside of rock and roll, hard to beat Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, and Julian Adderly.

Thread title says American Bands. With some listing Metallica over decades worth of them.

Webb is a good call. I was mostly just trying to bring some of the "big bands" into the discussion with my post.

The 12.31.69 Band of Gypsys release is probably the greatest live document of Jimi Hendrix there is, so I think it's safe to use those guys to get him in under the Americans only clause.

The Doors blow, people.
I will fight you
I love a good ifight, but he's right. THE DOORS BLOW
The Doors the band America loves to claim to hate.
Hey, I listened to them in college as much as the next guy, but they really are pretty boring in all facets.
Morrison was a hell of a lyric writer and Manzerak was no slouch on the music side. They have sold more than 100 million albums. They had 3 albums in RS's top 500. They have had numerous songs inducted into halls of fame. And lastly boring is certainly the one thing they weren't.
Robby Krieger was $$$ as a songwriter as well.
True

I thought about this again. Here is my list.

Aerosmith

KISS - Original line up

Eagles

Journey

Metallica

This is the final list. All others are junk.

You know since the anal retentives are fighting me on The Band I'll swap them for The Allman Brothers. Really should have been on the list anyway.

1. You haven't heard of them

2. They only play small venues

3. I have their only non-label release on vinyl

4. They aren't even born yet

5. Kid Rock
