The top five things Americans fear the most are as follows:

 1. Walking alone at night
 2. Becoming the victim of identity theft
 3. Lack of safety on the Internet
 4. Being the victim of a mass/random shooting
 5. Public speaking
Discuss. I think #2 and #3 are completely ridiculous. 1st world problems people? #4 is also an irrational fear if you base it on the numbers.

I think if I had to make my own, it'd be:

1) Debilitating illness (cancer, alzheimers, etc.)

2) Losing my job and not being able to support my family (unlikely, but I still worry about it)

3) Dying in my sleep (I go to bed...I don't wake up...I don't believe in heaven/afterlife, etc...I wouldn't even be able to be upset about it.

4) Reverse-darwinism...America is getting dumber and dumber.

5) Terrorists getting a nuclear weapon - It's going to happen in our lifetime...

1. Anything happening to my kids

2. Spiders

3. Creepy as #### things that aren't spiders, but aren't exactly insects, either, like those SOB's that have a million legs but run faster than the speed of sound

4. An honest day's labor

5. When I haven't figured out what the wife is angry about yet

1. One of my kids dying. Doesn't matter how....bonus points if it is somehow my fault.

2. Wife or kids being raped.

3. Wife or kids becoming handicapped in some way.

4. Myself becoming handicapped in some way.

5. Accidentally killing someone....bonus points if its a kid.

1) Something bad happening to my kids.

2) Something bad happening to a close family member.

3) Chimps

4) Losing my job would suck right now.

5)

1. Finding out all of the wheat pennies I have been hoarding are worthless

2. A national ban on yoga pants

3. Starting a non-football related thread in the Shark Pool

4. Finding out that I am a liberal when all of the time I thought I was a progressive

5. Waking up and finding out my wife is the chick in the offdee photo 1 (or 2)

Yeah, that first list is dumb. Yours is much closer to mine. I'd have your first two, plus debilitating illness of a loved one, plus getting eaten by a bear, plus...I'm not sure what #5 would be.

Dying in my sleep (I go to bed...I don't wake up...I don't believe in heaven/afterlife, etc...I wouldn't even be able to be upset about it.
Odd one here. More inclined to this guys' view:

"When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did–in his sleep. Not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car.”

I kind of assumed Debilitating illness wasn't just for me, but for anyone I care about, but it's definately worth 2 of the top 5 if I have to clarify.

Re eaten by a bear - A neighbor just told us last week that there was a bear walking down his driveway and down our cul de sac...About 15 minutes after the wife and baby went for a stroll in the same spot. Needless to say the wife now walks with pepper spray and an air horn. I'm not usually shaken up by stuff like that, but a guy in northern NJ was just killed by a bear a few weeks ago, so that kind of flustered me.

Lol @ your quote...I guess I'm a control freak. If I'm going to die, I want to know before it happens...or at least have some inkling, so I can be sure to tie up loose ends. Being in otherwise OK health, then having a massive heart attack while sleeping, to me, is akin to a great TV show getting cancelled mid-run.

1. Harm to family

2. Financial stability

3. Auto safety - can only read about so many people getting t-boned by drunks before it starts to make me leery of crossing the intersection

4. Snakes - #### those things

5. Bad neighborhoods at night I guess.

1) Ebola

2) ISIS-affiliated Illegal Immigrants from Mexico

3) Serial Killers

4) Secondary Drowning

5) Asteroid Impact

I don't fear death, no reason to, it happens to everyone. I fear sitting in my own drool with no one really being home. The loss of my ability to think and communicate clearly is the one thing I fear happening in old age.

We hike a few times a week so the bear fear is real, though black bears are generally not predatory. Those kids in NJ unfortunately did everything wrong (running, splitting up). The bear spray for your wife is a good idea.

I also have a slight fear of being attacked by a cougar (this kind, not this kind), but they tend overwhelmingly to attack kids and/or people who are hiking alone.

If we lump debilitating illness into one category, then I guess I need two more fears. One will be my house falling down the side of the hill due to earthquake, mudslide or such.

There are over 5 billion people in this world who haven't died yet. So let's not jump the gun on this "everyone dies" business.

I feel like that first cougar is singing some Def Leppard. Is that just me?

Roughly 107 billion people have been born on this planet. All but 7 billion are dead. It seems pretty much guaranteed.

Historically 100 billion people have died. So that would be over 90 percent of everyone who has ever lived. Odds don't favor not dying.

Is there proof they all died? Do you have death certificates for them all? You can't just go around throwing out numbers without any actual facts to back up your wild speculations.

Actually I do. Some are on clay tablets though. Got them in a storage locker.

Actually I think there is a very good chance many of us typing here today will live to be over 100 years old. In fact I have read several experts in the field of aging who say the first person to live to be 150 years old has already been born.

Sure. Change your tune now. I'm pretty sure one day we'll figure out a cure for death. Or maybe even find the cure that the Egyptians already discovered before they left this planet to join their brothers in Andromeda.

One day perhaps. But it isn't going to be today. And really we better fix a lot of other stuff before it happens or it will destroy us.

What about the Egyptians, though? Surely you don't believe they just all died during the pyramid building times. They still live and work among us. Well, the one's that couldn't fit on the ship to take them to Andromeda.

This. I don't want to end up with dementia or Alzheimers. I've told my wife if I get too bad to take me into the nearby game lands and leave me to be eaten by a bear. Chances are I'll want to cuddle with it.

His teeth were ground down to a powder, and the front of his face exploded out the back of his skull. He died instantly... the next day."

I unfortunately haven't been able to convince myself that there IS a heaven. I'm not opposed to religion, but I'm far too logical. Actually believing in something like that with no scientific proof is a leap I haven't made. I hope I can. I honestly wish I could come to terms with the concept as I think believing in it would make the thought of death much much more bearable...for now, I just believe that when I die, there's absolute nothingness....and that terrifies me.
