Chris McAlister

Al Harris

Asante Samuel

I can't believe the lack of respect Terrance Newman gets. Doesn't get a lot of picks, but as close to a shut down corner as there is in the league.

:goodposting: Bly and Hall are inconsistent but probably still in the top tier. Barber and Tillman (not listed here) are both inconsistent in press coverage but very good zone corners which is what they're asked to do a majority of the time. Asamougha, mentioned in another list, belongs here.I think Leigh Bodden belongs in the discussion and Richard Marshall and Johnathan Joseph are flashing excellent ability. Pacman Jones is beginning to get a reputation as a solid man cover guy too.

FWIW, Dre' BlyTerrence NewmanKen LucasPacman JonesAl Harriswould have been in my top 15. Terrence Newman has been solid this year.

Ken Lucas would have made my list last year, but has fallen off a little.

DeAngelo Hall has been struggling lately but he's still young and I think he has the potential to be one of the league's best.

Ronde Barber is not a great man on man cover corner but is probably the best zone corner in the league.

Antoine Winfield is very fundamentally sound and probably the best tackler from the CB position, but he can be picked on by bigger receivers.

I think Nathan Vasher is a better cover corner than Charles Tillman.

I agree that Terence Newman belongs in the conversation as well.

Leigh Bodden, Pacman Jones, and Dunta Robinson will probably all be up there soon too.

Based on his play from this year, Terrence Newman has to be in this conversation. Hes been real good

Top 3 imo are:

1 Champ

2 Mathis

3 McCallister

6 and 8...highly over-rated.
Many people see Hall as a top 5 CB. I see him as a top 10 CB and I think that's where he deserves to be. Yes, he tends to go for the big play more often than he should but he's solid. As for Dunta, I probably could have dropped him a few ranks lower but I think he's going to be a good one.

One name I don't see mentioned is Charles Woodson...are people in the same boat as me as he just isn't as good anymore and his name is what gets the notoriety.

Rashean Mathis has impressed me more than any other cornerback I have seen this year. He plays very physical against the run and has great instinct and timing on the ball in coverage as well as doing a great job of rerouting Wrs.

McCallister/Samari Rolle are a great cornerback combo as are Surtain/Law. Have to pick your poision against these guys. Bengals doing a excellent job against the Ravens tonight.

Also agree with Newman. Qbs tend to pick on Henry and not take thier chances against Newman. Dallas will leave Newman alone a lot of the time also and roll thier coverage to help Henry yet teams don't often try thier luck against Newman despite this tendency.

Champ of course.

Shawn Springs and Walt Harris were a big part of what made the Redskins defense a success prior to this year. The Redskins seem to be playing better defensivly now that Springs is back in the lineup.

I don't know if Charles Tillman is. I still have nightmares of Steve Smith publicly depantsing him in last year's playoffs. Tillman certainly isn't afraid to get physical and is a damned good tackler. Then again, if he was breaking up the passes, he wouldn't have to tackle. He did own Plaxico Burress a few weeks ago though.

I'm a huge fan of Rashean Mathis. I feel he's very underrated, probably because Jacksonville isn't a nationally popular team.

Nate Clements is very over-rated as well. I'm a die-hard Bills fan and I'll admit that. True, he's been pretty good the past couple of weeks, but he's no where near top 5, maybe not even top 10.

His contract runs out after this year. Is he stepping it up because of that? It's possible. I guess I'd put him in my top 10 though. Al Harris doesn't suck, but he's definitely not top 10. Something like this:

Champ

McCallister

Mathis

Surtain

Hall

Newman

Barber

Samuel

Winfield

Clements

I think Leigh Bodden belongs in the discussion and Richard Marshall and Johnathan Joseph are flashing excellent ability. Pacman Jones is beginning to get a reputation as a solid man cover guy too.
Joseph held up pretty well to the rookie hazing tonight, granted the ball was in front of him all night but he still showed good reaction. Can't catch worth a damn, but agree with 'flashing'.

Clements was awful early on this season and was defintely overrated compared to the contract he's playing on right now. But, since the Indy game or so, I'd be surprised if there are more than a handful of CBs around the league playing better than him. No way the Bills bring him back but he's going to get a huge contract that will make him one of the 2 or 3 highest paid CBs in the league this summer. He's definitely capable of being a top-5 CB in the league. He has everything...size, shutdown cover skills, playmaking ability, and he's an excellent tackler who does not shy from contact. When the Bills allow him to be aggressive, he can take a receiver out of a game and force the QB to avoid his side of the field. Few other CBs can do that.

I was impressed by his play as well. He is still learning though. Looks like a good corner for the Bengals moving forward.

Some good lists, some awful lists, but this is the REAL top 10.

1. Champ Bailey

2. Terrance Newman

3. Chris Mccalister

4. Rasheen Mathis

5. Nnamdi Asomugha

6. Ty Law

7. Leigh Bodden

8. Asante Samuel

9. Nate Clements

10. Dre Bly

I know I'll probably get hated on for the Ty Law selection, but the guy has been shutting down everyone this year.

Wont hate you on Ty Law, but I will on Nate Clements. Inconsistent would be the nicest term I could use to describe his past couple seasons.

I glad to see Rashean Mathis finally getting some love on the national scene. The guy can play man or zone, is very physical and is excellent in run support.

I agree that Newman has played his way into the debate this year and this is a big turn around for me. Last season I thought he was all hype, but he's played very well this year.

Champ is still the man. He gets beat now and then, but from what I've seen no one in the NFL gets left on an island more than him, it's bound to happen.

Nate Clements and Asante Samuel might not be top 5, but they are very good and free agents in a few months. That could get ugly.

I've been down on Pacman since... well forever. But the titans D does seem to play much better with him on the field. He one I'd like to see more film on because he's looked better than I'd like to admit in the action I've seen.

Hmm... only one of the guys I mentioned is in the NFC. But it looks like most of the lists here are AFC heavy so maybe I'm not too bias.

not many real shut down guys anymore. After the top so many it's like "he's real good but I can remember when WRsoandso got a ton of yards on him"

:goodposting: I came into this thread looking for him knowing that he wouldn't get the credit he deserves. I think he is top 5, I mean for god's sake he has to make up for having Roy Williams in the secondary with him.

Heh...I remember that game. I also remember a play where Tillman had the ball but Smith stole it from him. Tillman wasn't that bad in that game. Also, the Bears are playing a lot of Tampa Two defense which mean that Tillman often has to cover the flat, instead of the WR. From what I've seen from him, he's a solid tackler who's not afraid to get physical.

Terrance Newman needs to be top 3 here. Many have commented that they would consider him because he has had a good year this year. He had a great year last year. After playing Denver Champ Bailey told him "see you at the pro-bowl". Unfortunately nobody voted for him. Most underrated DB in league.

I can understand the "negative aura" but...what are you going to do? The guys can flat out cover. Teams just pretty much go to the other side. Very few balls are even attempted his way. The ones that are will be thrown to the middle where he is handing off to the safety. Don't even get me started there.Pac simply took over the Giants game and got us the win. Yes, VY put it in the endzone but Pac intercepted it twices, almost three times, and had a great punt return -- ALL in the 4th quarter. Are there stats anywhere that keep up with how many passes are thrown to the coverage of a certain CB? That would be interesting. SOMETIMES people with a lot of INTs...actually aren't that good. They get picks because the other team is chucking it to their side 25 times a game.

Put Champ at 1, drop Dunta for Newman, and Im in. PacMan's character arguably outshines his play, but hes been OUTSTANDING this year.
Never thought I'd say this, but I agree on PacMan. He has been an unbelievable player, not just a corner. His presence on D and ST has made an enormous difference.

Hes not quite Antrell Rolle mind you, but he is playing well because hes a better fit for the Titans defensive scheme ;)

GREAT discussion. I don't have that much to add...

- Samuel is good, but not great. Closer to average starter than Pro Bowl material. I think we'll see that if he leaves NE in free agency.

- Shawntae Spencer deserves to be in this discussion soon, if he isn't already.

- Shawn Springs really has been the most important player for the Skins pass defense. Old, but still bringing it.

- Marcus Trufant seems to be returning to form after struggling with some shoulder issues.

Funny... people rank 10 cornerbacks play, but have you actually watched them?

Given that you can barely see them on TV and how they all play for different teams, you must be some kind of fan.

Some of the staff members do game summaries and thus may watch a game more closely or more than once.

 I don't see every game each week but will often watch 6-7 with particular attention to the defensive side of the ball. While it's not coaches game tape, things like recovery speed, ball skills, footwork, hands, and most frequent type of coverage played (press vs zone) among others can be gleaned from the telecast and some isolated replays.Granted, I don't get to see many Texan or Niner games because of regional issues. So, some of the evaluation process is based on other scouting reports that you trust, reaction from defensive coordinators and opposing players (sometimes taken with a grain of salt), and an educated read of gamebooks and statlines. So I guess you could say some of us are different kinds of fans. :nerd:
