Torrey Smith - WR, BAL - expected to play (death in family) (1 Viewer)

As the early games are at half-time, here is what CBS Sportsline has Smith:

Torrey Smith, WR, BAL

News: CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports Ravens receiver Torrey Smith has left the team hotel following the death of his brother Tevin. The younger brother reportedly died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash about 2 a.m. Sunday in northeast Virginia. The Ravens play host to the Patriots on Sunday night and the team is leaving any decision to play up to Smith. "This is devastatingly sad, sad news. Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family. God bless Tevin," coach John Harbaugh said. La Canfora added that Smith will make a decision on his playing status during the day.

Analysis: Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with Smith following this terrible news and we hope to get word of his status prior to 1 p.m. ET. Fantasy owners need to use caution when setting lineups in case Smith decides to miss the game, which would be understandable given the situation. If he does play he would still be worth using as a low-end starter in standard leagues and a must-start option in three-receiver formats. Stay tuned and we hope to have the latest as the day goes on.

And the 1:37 PM update from Fox Sports:

Updated Sep 23, 2012 1:37 PM ET

BALTIMORE (AP)

The brother of Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith has been killed in a motorcycle accident.

Ravens officials say 19-year-old Tevin Chris Jones died in Virginia on Saturday night.

Smith posted on his Twitter account: ''I can't believe my little brother is gone...be thankful for your loved ones and tell them you love them...this is the hardest thing ever.''

It was unclear whether Smith would play Sunday night for the Ravens against the New England Patriots. A Ravens spokesman says the team will leave that decision up to Smith.

If Smith does not suit up, he will be replaced by Jacoby Jones.

Now in his second season with Baltimore, Smith grew up in Virginia before attending the University of Maryland.

Ravens WR Torrey Smith is on field working out with WRs. SalPal asked him how he was doing? "I don't know," he said. "It's still so fresh. "

I dont even see how he can play and be productive tonight. So count on him having 2tds and 100yds.
:goodposting:
He's gonna go tonight it seems - memories of Farve in a similar situation years ago? From CBS Sportsline:Torrey Smith, WR, BAL News: Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith informed the team that he is willing to play Sunday despite the loss of his brother in a motorcycle accident early in the day, and he is in uniform and active for the team’s Week 3 matchup against the Patriots. Analysis: Nobody would have been able to blame Smith if he chose to sit this one out, as the team made abundantly clear earlier in the day, so it says a lot about his mental toughness that Smith is willing to take the field under these circumstances. Fantasy owners can feel safe getting Smith active for the late game, as a low-end starting option in most formats.

I knew I should have played him today, but my gut reaction was to play Demariyus Thomas after such a great showing in weeks 1 and 2... I believe that Torrey was on a mission that game to win for his brother.

Don't feel bad. I sat Torrey for Greg Little and lost by 3 points.

Hard to beat ourselves up about benching him (I did too). HE didnt even know he was gonna play until around 4pm. Im so happy for the kid.
