Torrey Smith (1 Viewer)

What are people's thoughts on this guy going into his second season?

I'm expecting big things from him this year. He's in a good position in Baltimore with Boldin not getting any younger I think it's possible that Smith becomes the favourite in the passing game maybe with the TEs taking a little more of the load in the passing game. Smith had a few very good performances last year and with a full offseason to work on his overall game I think he'll get much better. There will still be the 50+ yard catches, but I think owners won't be depending on those odd monster catches to see some production out of him.

I like him, but am always hesitant banking on guys like that who get long TDs/catches, to repeat those numbers going into their sophomore year. I was right avoiding Avery and wrong avoiding D-Jax, so who knows, but I just think those "long numbers" are really hard to replicate and I sleep at night better on Saturdays knowing my guy is a 6-60 player versus a 2-80 one.

I really like him, and it's apparent that his owners are all really high on him as well. I've been trying to buy him in every league I have, and I've yet to be able to make a deal.

I see him being a Desean Jackson level player at worst, as soon as this year.

His owner offered him up to me for my 1.05 rookie pick. I think if I'm comparing him to the WRs available there (Floyd, Wright, Jeffrey) that Smith wins out, but there is other value at RB and QB that might be too good to pass up. The problem is I'm kind of high on him, and could see him being a big target for Flacco in his development. I see him a distant 3rd in his draft class, behind AJ Green and Julio Jones, but ahead of Little, Titus Young, etc. If he were in the rookie draft this year, knowing what we do about his rookie year, I think he'd be the #2 WR off the fantasy board behind Blackmon.

Im invested in him in a few leagues, i see lots of potential, but tgats assuming he progresses ib his catching n route running. If he can improve he has mike wallace potential imo. Or hes another one trick pony bye week fill in

I kind of like him but I'd be much more comfortable with someone who runs all the routes instead of doing much of the damage deep. If Smith can develop into a guy who can do it all that'd be great, but I'm not quite sold that it'll happen.

One of those guys I like a little more in best-ball leagues than in ones where I need to submit a lineup.

I think he's being overvalued. Seems like a major ability of his is to draw PI calls, which don't help in fantasy. Also, when looking at his stats, he got over a third of his stats in 2 games I believe. After every half decent game he had, he was shut down the next week.

It's not so much that he's overvalued by everyone - it's that whomever owns him at this point is a believer. Smith is one of the hardest guys to trade for right now.

Agreed, I own him and wouldn't trade him unless it was extremely in my favour to do so. His highlights might be clumped in a handful of games but I think we saw a sign of what he could become given the right circumstances. I think he will become the top target next year and with the offseason to work on his game I think he could be in for a good year.

I'm hanging. He had a better, more consistent rookie season than Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings, Steve Smith, Roddy White, Brandon Marshall, Jordy Nelson, Steve Johnson, etc.

You put up one monster game, and it's pretty easy to chalk it up to just surprising a team. When you do it two or three times, it's a different story. He may not ever fulfill his potential like those guys did, but you've got to give him a chance.

The problem is he's in the same class as two monumentally successful freaks and they are making it hard for him to shine when they blaze.

Buy buy buy. He didnt catch 50 bombs as a rookie...he caught 50 passes of all distances...with the lockout nonetheless. Hes going to learn all the routes...hes hard on himself too..which is a good thing. Kids gonna be a bad man.

Smith is someone I will be targeting in all leagues this season. He improved his route running as the season progressed (according to Raven fans) and with his explosion will be able to find room on short routes because of his deep speed. It sounds like he had quite a few deep balls that were overthrown/incomplete due to timing. With a full offseason I am expecting Flacco to find Smith with more efficiency when going deep. To boot he is a hard worker and has a good head on his shoulders. Also sounds like he dealth with an injury last year.

Last November

“He is not getting surprised by coverages,” Ravens offensive
coordinator Cam Cameron said. “I think you can see the mental growth.
He is really expanding his route tree.
“But now there is more tape for other guys to study,” he added.
“People are going to start looking at his stance, looking at his
shoulders, looking at his hands, looking at his eyes. They have more
tape to figure out what he is doing. I think he understands that.”

This May

“My biggest thing is that I will be healthy and whatever comes with that,” Smith said in April. “I was fast last year even with the injury so I wasn’t really too concerned about that. [i was just concerned about] not being able to play, about not having any pain while playing. I’m just excited about that.” Smith’s sports hernia made it difficult for him just to walk at times last year. But he didn’t want to make any excuses. He said he played through it, so there’s no room to talk.

“I just saw him getting better over the year,” Boldin told BaltimoreRavens.com before departing for Africa. “I saw his routes improve, his concentration improve. “The sky’s the limit for him. He’s a guy that has rare speed and teams are going to be threatened by that. My advice to him is to learn to do everything else.” Boldin says teams are going to continually give Smith more room because they are threatened by him beating them over the top. “If he just learns how to play underneath,” Boldin said, “he’ll be unstoppable.”

“I plan on improving in every way possible,” Smith said. “Sharpen up my mechanics and just try to be consistent. … Anybody can make a play, but to make plays consistently makes you special.”

As a Torrey Smith owner, I see it hard to deal him unless the other owner is trading for the potential that I see him as having. With that being said, the Mike Wallace comparisons are certainly high value comparisons as far as I'm concerned. Wallace plays in a much heavier passing attack but I think is more of a one trick pony than Smith is.

Torrey, to me is, is going to prove what he's going to be this year. Playing most of the year last year with his sports hernia is impressive in the fact that he was still a solid contribution to fantasy teams. I look for him to come in at around 60 catches with 1000 yards and 7-9 TDs.

pretty much all of last years rooks with no OTAs and shortened TCs are tough to project.....some will make huge advances, some not so much. I'm in the camp that he advances.

Smith had a great rookie year and it seems him and Flacco already have a connection on the deep ball. I realize he isn't the most impressive WR, but whos to say he wont get better? He is the clear #1 in Baltimore and Although Flacco isn't what we consider a stud QB hes good enough to get Smith the ball consistently. certainly a guy I would be ecstatic with as my WR 3 and I think he has high end WR2 potential this year.

Very impressed and i was skeptical once they traded for Evans. I think he is a natural number 2 but the defacto 1 in Baltimore.

I have his floor/ceiling at exactly that....Low WR3 to High WR2. Boldin keeps fading, Rice gets less than the 110+ he got in 2011. That is the formula for Smith to reach ceiling.

LOL ok maybe I'm the one that was asleep at the wheel with him... I guess I just never really thought about him before. I like him and his situation, at least for the upcoming year.

I feel like I have been hearing his name a lot. I personally think someone like Greg Little has been all but forgotten about. He will be a little more comfortable in a complex offense, a number one target, and could potentially have a better qb. His touchdown numbers should only go up, as well.

Torrey Smith... 50 receptions .... 841 yards ..... 7 tds in first year.

3 of his TDs might be considered somewhat of a fluke in the 3rd game of the year and then only 4 more the rest of the season.

He's got a long way to go before I would feel good about him being a #2 fantasy option. In a dynasty league he would have value as a stash for the future.

Boldin is still Flacco's 1st option despite fading somewhat the last 2 years.

I do not feel good about any Baltimore WR this year.

The key is striking before someone becomes a consistent fantasy producer. He has many characteristics that make me think he could be heading in that direction.

Given the cost for him in most of my leagues, I don't think anyone is sleeping on him. In start-ups, I've been seeing him go in the 5th or 6th round at the latest...and I have been unsuccessful in every trade offer I've thrown out there for him.

I think he'll be a solid WR2 (17-20 range), but even at that level, his current value seems to be at that level or higher.

Nice, I dont know how or who combined the thread... but thank you! lol. What do you guys expect from him this season? Yards, tds, targets, receptions?

Targets: 110 receptions:70 Yards: 1106 (15.8 ypc) TDs:7

good enough for WR16 in .5 ppr leagues last year

I didn't realize he was going so high already. I will need to now start a Torrey Smith is overrated thread. I got him fairly cheap IMO so I assumed he was a little under the radar (gave Ridley, M Bush, Donald Brown).

I assumed the same thing too  apparently hes being overrated lol

I like him. While it is true that he did run mostly the long routes, I look for him to improve and become more consistent. I wouldn't be surprised to see him be the leading receiving for BA this season and to surpass Boldin.

I like Torrey Smith, I just don't like Flacco and I think Boldin is on a big decline which will make it easier for defenses to key in on him and Rice. Despite that, I see a solid WR2 with more upside than risk.

Does Smith have the potential to be a serious threat to the WR1 role in Baltimore? Can he handle that type of workload? Can his body absorb the punishment?
