Town property codes (1 Viewer)

Is it ever worth arguing over these things?

I received a notice from our town that they are requiring all property owners to put reflective address signs in front of their homes, with specific criteria to be met: within 25 feet of edge of road, signs must be reflective and have 4" high numbers on a contrasting background. The rationale given for this was to assist first responders in locating addresses. They will also sell these signs to the property owner for 12.00.

I forgot about this after receiving the notice and later received a notice of non compliance, giving me an additional 30 days before another inspection. The notice of non compliance referenced NYS property code 304.3 as well as the town code. Neither of these codes require a) a reflective sign, or b) the address sign to be within 25 feet of the road. They are just codes for displaying address numbers on your house that must be a certain size and clearly visible from the road. I'm in compliance with both as my house address number is over 4" high, black numbers on white siding, and is clearly visible from the road.

I'm tempted to just go along for the sake of not having a petty functionary looking to give me grief over ticky tack #### down the road but I'm annoyed because I don't want a post in my front yard-one more thing to weed whack and mow around. Plus it seems like they are just arbitrarily deciding they want this and deceptively quoting codes that don't apply.

Eta apparently I can be fined 100.00/week for "non compliance"

If your address is clearly visible from the road, day and night, take a few good pictures and say you're already in compliance with the codes. Visibility for fire/police/rescue is obviously their concern. If pictures show that's already the case, common sense might prevail I beat a traffic ticket with some good pictures (showing the 1-way sign I didn't obey was facing the opposite direction, and couldn't be seen by drivers going my direction).

Put it up, then spray it with something sticky. Then all the grass clippings will stick to it and make it look like crap. That will show them!

Anything that will slow down or confuse an emergency responder coming to save your family is worth fighting for

Yeah I get that. Not sure how this will slow anyone down though. House number is right on front of house, large numbers, clear and visible. Also have house number on mailbox across the street-rural area and no other houses close to mine. I'm wondering if this is a fund raising thing for the volunteer Fire company. When I googled reflective signs (to buy one) there's like a million fire companies all over the country selling them. It's annoying that I'd be threatened with non compliance and fines in order to facilitate fund raising. It's not like every township-or city-requires them. Not to mention stating it's in order to comply with state and local codes when that's just not the case.

I'm a pro government liberal in almost all scenarios. But unnecessary deceptive practices are bothersome. Having said that I'll likely just go along to get along as usual.
