Triathlon Leg 2 Posted (1 Viewer)

Family Matters and Clayton were assigned, but Clayton took over for David Baker when he could not do it. I think FM was out of town during this so I am guessing that's not going to happen.

In that case I would challenge all the participants to recap their draft here in terms of:

1) Basic strategy and approach heading into the draft

2) What worked and what didn't during the draft

3) Analysis of final roster

4) Pre season outlook on your team versus the field

For my team, here is the breakdown on strategy and analysis

1) Heading into the draft I was looking at acquiring a roster of

3 QB for less than 17% of my budget (moving extra $ to RB/WR)

5/6 RB for 42%+ of my budget

6/7 WR for 28%+ of my budget

2 TE for less than 7% of my budget, although I do have a preference for getting one of the top four

this year

2 Kickers for less than 3% of my budget

3 DST for 3% of my budget

I don't do specific player values for FF like I do for baseball because the variables are too high. What I do instead is base the budget on how the scoring went for the year before (which will vary on league rules etc)

This usually involves writing off top RB as I am not willing to pay that much for the one player in order to have better balance on the rest of my team. I do believe in overspending for your starters in a league where there are FA pickups during the season. As this league would be a "draft and follow" I don't think a "Stars & Scrubs" will be nearly as effective (although if you nail the $1 and $2 dollar players it could definitely work)

A few other notes that were vaguely in play during this auction:

1) due to the lack of a website for auctions that everyone was comfortable with, we decided to do it in a chat room - this works fine, but we REALLY should have had an independent Auctioneer to make it easier on everyone involved (and to a very small degree, it's just not the same without a live draft)

2) While everyone, staff or MB wants to do as well as they can, it IS part of the larger contest, and we do have teams and thus teammates to try and watch out for during the draft (to the extent that is possible to small degrees online in a chat room) I know some of the readers probably were scratching their heads about previous comments that vaguely referenced this.

3) Not only would this be a "draft and follow" team - in that your roster for the year would be what you brought out of the draft with no free agents, but we were also "optimizing the scoring" (like you would have in a "draftmasters" competition - IOW you get your best QB score for the week; your two best RB scores for the week, etc.) There are some ramifications of this within each team's buying and roster formulation

2) Okay I "watched" as the first group of running backs zoomed off the board. IIRC the first nominated was Ronnie Brown who went for what I thought was a hefty $45. This was followed by most people staying in their shell as the bidding on Shaun Alexander rocketed into the $40s and crawled into the mid 50s. I think Dodds got a great bargain when the bidding stopped at $58 - especially when subsequent bidding would get Tomlinson and Larry Johnson up to 67 and 70 and then have people scrambling since they missed on those two thus inflating Steven Jackson to 57 and Tiki to 58. While I was quietly waiting for the second and third tier backs to come up, there were a few receivers nominated. I was pretty happy to roster Larry Fitzgerald for $32 - sure I like Chad Johnson and Torry Holt a little more, but they went for 37 and 40. Frankly I was even happier to get Javon Walker for $16 ( my budget for those positions was roughly 31+ and 13+ and I felt early that I would be able to get better value with good WR, given that the scoring is PPR and we have a flex spot, so you would have your players optimized to 3RB, 3WR or 2RB, 4WR without having to guess on a lineup - something that favors quantity and quality for your receivers).

My RB plan too shape though as I got Rudi Johnson for $41 (budgeted at $46) and I wanted to buy one of the "pairs" at RB this year, thinking NE and IND offered the best choices for the least $. In fact the next player I bought - Tom Brady for $14 pretty much made that choice for me as I didn't want to be totally dependent on the Patriots scoring. Addai came up first and I got him for $19 (pretty much all I wanted to spend) and then had to go the extra buck to get Rhodes at $13 (although I think he will post better numbers for the year, the drafting perception is definitely the other way). But at $32 for the both of them with the optimized scoring, I definitely am happy with them as my RB2.

Most of the rest of my roster was just following the plan and getting the best players I could for the dollars I had left. There were a couple of twists though. Dodds made the nice play of throwing out the Panthers DST for $4 - given that I though the Bears would go for more and I really love the Carolina defense this year, I tried $5 - and it worked - he got a few dollars from me there. The other thing was that I got Shayne Graham for $2 and then strangely Jay Feely for $1, so I was fine at K - but when Neil Rackers came out for $1, I said $2 ( couldn't let a staffer have him for $1) - and bought him - well he is still the best kicker in the league and should have gone for $4 - hey I should at least get some good points each week with the three - but it shorted me a roster spot and as the DST started going for $2 instead of $1, I decided to go with extra RB and WR where I was getting more for my dollar.

I had planned on having a third QB, but with Brady ($14) and Kitna ($5) fitting nicely, I had to decide whether I needed a third QB more than a sixth RB and given Brady's consistency and track record chose the extra RB - that may prove to be wrong, but seemed right at the time and I was happy to get Antowain Smith for my last player - regardless of who else is in the Texan's backfield I think he gets plenty of goal line action (assuming they can get that far).

3) Final Roster and Comments (bye weeks in parens):

QB - Brady (6) & Kitna (8) - should provide solid numbers every week

RB - R. Johnson (5), Addai & Rhodes (6), T. Henry (7), Jacobs (4), A. Smith (5) solid if not sexy (unlike others I only need two scores here each week)

WR - Fitzgerald (9), J. Walker (4), L. Evans (8), Bradford (8), Burleson (5), B. Edwards (6), Curtis (7) - clearly the strength of the team and I should get four good scores each week from this group.

TE - Shockey (4) & D. Graham (6) - Shockey is a STUD

K - Graham (5), Feely (4) & Rackers (9) - very good+

DS - Carolina (9) & Jacksonville (6) - again should be very good

4) I think this team is balanced with lots of value and lots of scoring potential. Rudi and the INDY RB should be very solid and the two buck Chucks will all have their scoring weeks; The WR are excellent - I think Edwards and Burleson were great buys for $6 each; TE will be above average and K and DS among the better combinations, so overall I think this is one of three or four contending teams. I think David Dodds' team is very good, as is Aaron Rudnicki's on the staff side and Radballs on the MB side, although there are several more teams that could compete if the breaks go their way. We will just have to watch them play and see. (BTW both pre-auction and post auction comments are expanded in two articles on the site where I write for FF and baseball).

A great competition - everyone had their moments and I doubt anyone can accurately predict what will happen. Good Luck and MB RULES.

It sounds like I dropped the ball - Evilgrin and FM were going to decide which of them would do the auction writeup, and I thought they had sorted it out. I can write something up or ask one of them to do it, still. Would you like for me to?

Can you write up my team quick before the Palmer and Bengals D hype wears down?

LOL, it was the Packers. Maybe I can write up my RBs before the Redskins trade for Duckett, SJax has a heel problem and Greg Jones blows out his knee. Apparently Sinrman is psychic.

Not a good week in this league when your TEs and D and your kicker are your top three scorers. I think I'm gone at just over 100 points, which just goes to show you I suck at this. :banned:

Is this the high score so far? :pickle:

my team had an awful week and dropped from 2nd to 4th.

QBs and RBs are fine but my WRs/TEs are really shaky. hoping they can pick things up going forward though.

McNair and Plummer are killing me in this thing. I'm not surprised that McNair has struggled, but I thought Plummer would have a good year with Walker in the fold. He's been nothing short of awful.

To be fair, of my top 2 QBs, ONLY 2 RBs and 4 of my top 5 WRs, only one (Deion Branch) has had his Bye week. So my scores will be going down some, I'm sure. But it was nice to take advantage of having all my guys to make that run to 2nd place over the last 3 weeks.

I'm still screwed since Daunte Culpepper and Chris Simms are my only two QBs. But I actually went 10-1 this week.

Nice job MT. I'm down to 1 RB next week, unless Adrian Peterson gets some work. So my hold on 2nd place could slip.

I was cleaning up my fantasy football folder on my computer tonight and saw the Post-Auction questions, which I don't think ever got posted on the site. Still a long way to go, but I wasn't very complimentary of my own team and then to the question of whose team I disliked the most, I answered Chris Smith. LOL, glad they never published that.

Sure. I went into this auction and my other league that is an auction with a basic change in philosophy from years past. I was going to concentrate a lot more on getting good players and a lot less on getting good value. Every year in my auction league I end up with players that are pretty good values, but not necessarily good player or players I wanted. So this year, I changed my tactic and decided I wanted to get good players and not worry much about what they cost. I really liked McNabb and SJackson this year and I thought people were WAY overreacting to Portis' injury (RB28?). So I went out and got them and I don't think I really overpaid. McNabb ended up being overpriced, but he was the 2nd QB off the board and I thought that $10 less than Manning was decent. I liked Trent Green this year, but that hasn't gone so well. However grabbing a 3rd starting QB, even if it was Smith, has worked out. At RB, I knew that I needed to get Betts in case of further issues with Portis. I had no interest in Duckett, as Betts was the better bet, esp in a PPR format. I really liked Greg Jones this year and his injury has hurt. For some reason I had a premonition about Adrian Peterson. Next year I'll make sure I'm not drinking during the auction. I spent too much on Branch at WR, but I liked him. I thought he was a solid choice if he stayed in NE, but still could contribute if traded, esp in PPR because he's a good possession WR. The rest of the WRs were just mid to low priced guys filling out the roster. I thought Jennings would be good, but he has obviously exceeded my expectations. I hoped that Carter would be better, but he may still come one. At TE I wanted Watson, but settled for Witten, how is finally starting to pick it up. I thought Sheffler would be better this year, but I can't complain. I liked both Kickers a lot and own them in multiple leagues. I wanted to go with 3 defenses to try to take advantage of the DEF TDs that can "randomly" help a defense. Truthfully I expected WAS to be used most weeks, but SEA and MIN have really stepped it up.The only things I would do differently would be to spend the money on a more solid WR1 next year and get a 6th RB instead of a 3rd DEF. Hope to catch Chris Smith, but I'm not sure I will.

I'm not much better off with KJ hobbled, Plummer on the verge of being benched, and Antonio Bryant driving like a maniac. I thought I had a good shot at the money in this thing, but I think my team will sink into the loser's bracket.

Come on Manning, Holt, Green, and R. Brown. Need some big weeks from these guys unlike last week. Getting Gonzo back should help hopefully.
