I'm upset that I didn't have the answer straight away.Let's see there were the Philly Stars, Washington Federals, New Jersey Generals, Boston Breakers, Michigan Panthers, L.A. Express, Oakland Invaders, Memphis Showboats, Denver Gold, Chicago Blitz, Birmingham Stallions, and Tampa Bay Bandits.For some reason I think Tampa had the first pick and selected QB Steve Spurrier with it. But I could be off the rails on that one. Second thought is that Chicago had the pick and selected someone unobtainable.I do remember Steve Young signing a 43-year $40m contract with the L.A. Dammit Memphis was an expansion team :( The Arizona Wranglers were the other team. They also have the distinction, I believe, of having the only original owner who actually made $ on the USFL.-QG

I knew about the Steve Young 40 year annuity, but in googling to see when it would end I came across the following that I hadn't heard, in his wikipedia article:

As it turned out, Young would have done well to take his contract in the form of an annuity, but according to Steve himself, he took the roughly $1 million that it would have taken to fund the annuity as a lump sum.[1] In his second season with the Express, owner William Oldenburg went bankrupt, and was forced to turn the team over to the league after being unable to find a buyer. The season rapidly became a fiasco. Before one game, the team bus driver refused to drive the Express to the Coliseum after his paycheck bounced. Young contributed a lot of money, as did some of his teammates, and the driver got them to their game. Young then lined up in the tailback position and took snaps from the shotgun formation because the Express were left with no healthy running backs.

It was all good until they decided to go head-2-head with the NFL - both in terms of moving to the fall and legally.If I am not mistaken, Donlad Trump was the genius who started that snowball rolling into disaster.

The owners weren't doing themselves any favors, but yes, Trump pushed them over the edge. I think it's easy to see that he intended to buy into the USFL and then force a merger, basically getting an NFL team on the cheap.They have a decent deal from ABC/ESPN to stay in the spring, but gave it all up for the "big" fall money.
