from Bloomberg:

Berlin (AP) -- German media are reporting a truck has run into a crowded Christmas market in the center of Berlin, causing multiple injuries.

Both the Berliner Zeitung newspaper and the Berliner Morgenpost reported the truck ran into the market outside the landmark Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Monday evening.

A photo posted by the Morgenpost showed damaged tables and stalls.

The Berliner Zeitung said police believed there to be multiple injuries, but police couldn't immediately be reached to confirm.

Both newspapers reported it wasn't immediately clear whether the incident was an accident or some kind of an attack on the market.

The strategy of ISIS beyond killing of innocent people (assuming they're responsible, or some other similar terror organization) could be to anger the masses. This leads to emotional voting, and possibly putting inept leaders in place... With enough inept leaders across the globe, chaos ensues.

Thanks for the political opinion.  It would be nice if we could have a thread where we get actual news updates rather than ridiculous political opinions that have nothing to do with what is going on, on the micro-level.  Is the overall rise of ISIS responsible for Trump or Brexit?  I don't know, but is this the time or place to discuss it?

I'll bow out now because apparently I'm in the minority on this one.  You guys enjoy.

I'm going to go ahead and assume this was a Muslim refugee.  It may be a little wreckless to jump to conclusions, but I have been known to be wrong before.  My board cred can afford to take a minor hit.

German police states that two pleople left the vehicle, one was apparently caught at the scene, the other fled into Tiergarten park, where one person has been arrested (whether this is the right person remains to be seen). There are reports that the person that was caught at the scene is now dead.

The German police state that it looks like an attack.

 
It was either a Muslim refugee, the Grinch, or Uncle Scrooge.  Those are the only other guys who hate Christmas enough to do something like this.

One guy apparently escaped into the zoo. Hopefully he's hiding in the tiger pen, who ever he is

Apparently the truck had Polish licence plates. Whether that is significant is unclear. Lots of Polish trucks in Germany hauling goods

A truck plowed into a crowded Christmas market in the German capital Berlin on Monday evening, killing nine people and injuring up to 50 others, police said.

German media, citing police at the scene, said first indications pointed to an attack on the market, situated at the foot of the ruined Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, which was kept as a bombed-out ruin after World War Two.

The incident evoked memories of an attack in France in July when Tunisian-born man drove a 19-tonne truck along the beach front, mowing down people who had gathered to watch the fireworks on Bastille Day, killing 86 people. The attack was claimed by Islamic State.

The truck careered into the Berlin market at what would have been one of the most crowded times for the Christmas market, when adults and children would be gathering in the traditional cluster of wooden huts that sell food and Christmas goods.

Berlin police said nine people were killed

"I heard a big noise and then I moved on the Christmas market and saw much chaos...many injured people," Jan Hollitzer, deputy editor in chief of Berliner Morgenpost, told CNN.

"It was really traumatic."

Police cars and ambulances converged quickly on the scene as a huge security operation unfolded. The fate of the driver of the truck was not immediately clear, but Bild newspaper said he was on the run.

Emma Rushton, a tourist visiting Berlin, told CNN the truck seemed to be traveling at about 40 mph (65 Kmh).

Asked how many were injured, she said that as she walked back to her hotel, she saw at least 10.

Julian Reichelt, editor in chief of Bild Berlin, said that there was currently a massive security operation under way.

Actually ISIS has a stated goal to make Western nations reject Muslim refugees to try to force moderate Muslims into extremism. So yes, ISIS likes the nationalist wave sweeping the Western world.

Hopefully the perp killed at the scene was done as in as greusomely as possible. Like torn apart TWD style.

Quite often these attacks seem to be by individuals who more properly could be called ISIS sympathizers rather than "official" members of the Islamic State. 

In any case, I've always been skeptical that there is any "specific" plan to these attacks other than to cause as much terror as possible.

IDK, incident seems pretty straightforward to me - maniacs plow through innocent civilians at Christmas market. 

Unless someone is looking to keep track of the casualty count or model of truck used - the conversation will clearly lead to this direction.

I'm sure there are some people at the top of these organizations that aren't morons. They can only cause so much terror or kill so many people with their resources, if they cause enough distress it could have a domino effect - refugees not being taken, extreme conservatives being elected, Muslims being shunned in huge numbers. What type of effect do you think this would have? Hint: it would do much more for their sick twisted cause than killing a few dozen people.

This is true but ultimately their sole goal is to bring about the apocalypse by way of a holy war. The problem is there is no neat solution, hell there may be no realistic solution.

You can "go to war" with them but we've already seen how difficult it is to go to war with an ideology.

You can try to ignore them in an attempt to delegitimaize the movement by not referring to their actions as "Islamic" but they will continue to instigate regardless.

The only solution I see would be to dissolve the environment that is conducive to people being brainwashed by religion but that would take generations and humans are intrinsically short-sighted.
