Turning down a promotion? (1 Viewer)

Ive been at this job for a year in NYC. My annual review went well and i was given a 3% raise.

I was told by my immediate supervisor, between us, that im one of the next 3 guys in line for a promotion tomanagement.

Its quite clear who the other 2 are.

One has told me he isnt interested in going to management and the other guy has been screwing up lately and told me in private about some life problems and it sounds like he is headed for an implosion.

So its likely going to be me who gets called unless corporate hires outside which they rarely do.

Corporate has been expanding and opened 3 new branches in the last 6 months. The most recent in NJ thanks in part to me helping business grow.

Word is they are slowing down for now and in 6 months to a year they want to move in to Chicago next.

I just dont feel ready for a relocation like that. Certainy not in 6 months due to other commitments here.

In a year maybe.

How badly could it hurt me career wise to turn down a promotion?

I would be honest with them about why and that i am interested in starting up a new branch in the future.

Keep in mind this is a very cool company where everyone has access to the CEO if needed.

Quit immediately. Any company considering promoting you to anything higher than Post-It Note Coordinator is heading for an iceberg.

Yea I am saying make the sacrifice and accept if offered.

All things being equal, I wouldn't hop off the tracks.. never know if you can get back on.
It would be more enticing if it were a place with a lower cost of living.

Im imaging chicago is just about as expensive as nyc.

Im just a guy on a fantasy football message board.

I don't know what is important to you, nor do I know how your company will react.

I have seen people in my business decline, stay in good favor.. but never get the call again.

Which business is that?

Whats the overall personality of the company?

Medical device sales... get together a group of the most competitive people you know, probably can't touch us.

There are 10 others behind you and 10 more you never saw coming waiting for you to leave that door open a crack.  Good performers will never get let go, but it sends a message that you are happy where you are (some are).

Cant get quotes to work properly.

Matuski that doesnt sound anything like my companies culture.

Its more of a friendly family atmosphere. We are one big HR dept.

Edit: im not happy enough in my current position long term.....i just didnt expect things to happen this fast since i was 100% new to this business when i was hired

Are you getting your own personal scoop?

Sorry I couldn't find one with the neck/sleeve tat and needle marks.

First and foremost, you don't turn anything down until you have an offer.  And even then, you can negotiate.  Ask to work remotely, ask for more money.  Would you take it if they offered either of those?  It sounds like you don't know what will happen, so for now, just relex and once you get an offer, then you negotiate for what will work for you.

That wouldnt be possible because i have to interview and train people.

Have you asked?  If they value you that much, they may let you travel for example.  You would be surprised what people will do for employees they value.  All im saying is don't make any decisions until you have the full offer and you know all the details on the role.

Hmm

I appreciate the input. I have no experience with this sort of negotiation.

Serious answer, you would be stupid not to take it.  You have ####ty education, experience and background.  A once in a lifetime situation presented itself and you are thinking about a ####### band and a girl who lives at home with her parents?  Wtf.

How properly is this quote working?

Michael: What's the only thing worse than one HR rep?

Ryan: Two HR reps.

Michael: You get me.

You absolutely take the promotion if it's offered:

1) A band and GF are not a reason to decline a promotion.

2) You turn this down that's a bell you can't unring. No one on this board is going to be able to tell you what will happen but I would think chances are you don't get the opportunity again for quite a while or possibly don't even get it at all.

3) You mentioned that if this came up a year from now you'd go for it but that in the shorter term you have issues? It sounds like you have cold feet. If you're OK with this in a year you should also be OK in 6 months.
