Universal ID Cards (1 Viewer)

Countries like India, Russia and Filipines have adopted biometric Universal ID cards. Do you see this being rolled out in the United States in the next 5-10 years?

Here is a report on the Indian pilot program sponsored by the European Union, United Nations and World Bank: http://www.cgdev.org/sites/default/files/biometric-performance-lessons-India.pdf

The existing cards are based on fingerprints and iris scans but I think the next generation in development may use DNA sequences.

Will this help get rid of illegals?
New York City started biometric Municiple IDs this year. It is free and does not store the applicant's immigration status. It offers free 1 year membership to 33 of the city's cultural institutions (e.g. museums, zoos, botanic gardens, etc). This offer lasts until Dec 31, 2015 but the freebies are good for a year starting on the sign up date.http://www1.nyc.gov/site/idnyc/about/about.page

You know what they say about no free lunches. Don't blame me if you apply.

Republican Party is strongly against it. Wont happen.
A lot of politicians hate that it can prevent voter fraud.

What are some real good reasons against it?
Privacy. People don't want all that info in a single pace with the federal government.
But the federal government already has a lot of info in a single place after Bush's Real ID Act in 2005. They also have records of everything we say on our phones and on the Internet. It's a little late to complain about privacy when the FEDs can easily smurf or take over anyone's smartphone.

Bad idea. Too easily faked. I can buy an ID that will fool DHS scanners for 100.00. This will be no different.

Can you now?
Yes you can. In about half an hour I can buy someone's personal information and order a drivers license with all the holograms and the works. If I want someone else's info the cost is higher of course but not much. China pumps these things out and they aren't the only ones.

Look at the 100 dollar bill. Redone to be allegedly counterfeit proof. Nearly the same day the US released them perfect fakes were in circulation.

If someone can make it someone can fake it.

BTW it should be pointed out that there is no real scientific evidence for the claim that all fingerprints are unique.

Why is this an argument against it? State DLs are less easily faked?
No they are very easy to fake. The arguments against it are numerous. First it doesn't solve any problem. Second it would require a national database of everyone. It would inspire ramped up surveillance of everyone. It could easily become a defacto internal passport. And it would lead to more discrimination and profiling of non-whites.

Don't we already have national databases of everyone? Social Security, IRS, passports, etc.

Not sure why a national ID card would increase surveillance?

Not sure what you mean when you say "de facto internal passport". How is that different than state driver's licenses?

Definitely unclear on why you think a national card would lead to more discrimination and profiling of non-whites. Can you explain?

Let's get rid of all IDs then.

They have their place but this idea that they are some kind of solution is more than a little silly. It's just more security Kabuki like airport security.

I'm torn. It would be a lot more convenient for me personally and in general I like the concept.

But it would be bad for illegal immigration, and therefore bad for this country. So I have to say no.
