Update on Fantasy Magazines for 2011 (1 Viewer)

For those of us who still like the rags in spite of their limitations, I decided to do a little checking on what's being planned with them since I've only seen a couple on the stands:

Out now--Sporting News, Fox Fantasy Football, one more whose name escapes me with Foster on the cover

Cancelled for 2011-- Fantasy Index (already covered in another thread, but rumored to be considering an online edition) ESPN (yeah, like that'll be missed) Fantasy Sports

Holding Pattern--Sports Illustrated and Rotoworld say they will still publish if the lockout doesn't drag on much longer than early July. Rotowire will publish late July (mock-up I saw has Jamaal Charles on the cover) but will have a smaller print run and only be available online.

No links for all this, just info gathered from various sources surfing thru Google--

I have the "Fantasy Football 2011" mag with Foster on the cover.

Don't waste your money. Very poor read and it seems as though their projection are all on the low end.

Footballguys magazine of course! ;)

Rotoworld mag isn't too bad provided that they actually put one out.

Update : Lindy's rag will be out July 5th. Never bought it so I couldn't comment on it.

I still like the old school non-fantasy pro football preview mags, like Athlon's, Street & Smith's, and Lindy's. They've all added a little fantasy info here and there, but still have enough of the old-style material to be nostalgic.I haven't seen a Street & Smith's in a long time. Athlon's was still printing at least until a few years ago ... haven't looked for one in a while, though.

I actually liked ESPN's magazine...filled with a lot of dumb humor and their analysis is never better than what I get on a daily basis here, but they did two things I liked...they go super deep on their rankings (they rank roughly 130 WRs compared to Fantasy Index's 40-50). One, in a 12 team league, you are not even seeing everyone who will be selected and two, a guy like Stevie Johnson was only mentioned briefly in the team capsule of FI...I know he was a surprise, but a guy who finishes top 15 barely mentioned in the mag?!?!

The other thing I liked is that in the team capsule area of ESPN, they started to highlight (a few years back) a corner from each team and highlight whether he is a good matchup or bad one...some of it is elementary (exploit the guy opposite Nnamdi), but sometimes there are surprises of guys who may not have been burned for massive plays (and get their face plastered over the sports shows), but give up a high amount of yards per passing play. I found this very informative and would reference back over the season in situations where I knew my WR would be lined up against one of these guys.

I like Lindy's

I always loved it when magazines had their rankings by alphabetical order. How stupid. Or no rankings at all and all stats were printed team by team. Again dumb. Rankings, by position and projection is the only logical way to make them. Oh and more than 20 HB's please. I mean it's a fantasy football magazine, why can't they put the top 100 at every position? Why stop at the top 29 WR's? Back in the day I never understood who buys those mags.
