Upgrade Jets running game (1 Viewer)

The Daily News reported that C/G Norm Katnick, who has started the last two games at LG in place of Pete Kendall, was waived, indicating that Kendall and the veteran and versatile OL Trey Teague are ready to return to action.

My thoughts:

Kendall should step right back into his old position at LG, while Teague could see time at RT. With the return of these vets, the Jets O-line could ahve some more success running the ball. With Indy coming to town, expect the Jets to emphasize the run in an effort to keep Manning & the O off the field. This will be an important week to evaluate the Jets running backs, and a good week to buy into the Jets running game for cheap.

But the question remains, who is their RB? I think that there could be value there, but until one of the RBs seperate themselves, they are going to be pretty useless.

Okay Mr Barlow. Your old team dissed you. You needed time to learn the book. Your linemen night finally be healthy. We've lit a fire by putting Leon stories in the paper. Let's see whatcha got.

actually a nice one week play could be Leon Washington. The Colts had problems with the Jags' Jones-Drew last week and Washington is a similar type back.

as far as who is "the man" Mangini seems to be comfortable with letting the opponent's D dictate who will get the majority of work in a given week.

I don't know that it's a matchup thing. What I've seen is that Barlow is getting the goaline work. Houston got two carries in the red zone only b/c Barlow hurt his foot and came out. In other words, Barlow would have had two TDs last week. He's the only one with some bankable value, and he's also the one most likely to benefit from the O-line b/c he gets the most carries. I think Mangini is aware that Barlow is doing the best he can with the blocking he's getting, and has shown some nice ability.

Washington made a couple of eye-opening plays, but he's no goaline threat, and at the very least he will first have to prove himself in a 3rd-down type role before getting a big chunk of carries. Blaylock is done, imo. I mean he may get some touches here and there, but I think his shot at being the man is gone.

I was thinking the same, in a PPR he maybe a sleeper start this week. I hope Mangini gives him a healthy dose of touches this week.

Have Barlow and picked up Washington this week. Might start Washington thinking that the Jets have been playing over their heads, are thus due to be blown out, and who better to blow a team out than the Colts. Thus Washington plays because the Jets will be in catchup mode.

 The Jets are NOT playing over their heads. Yeah, I know...I'm biased as a Jets fan but the defense is solid and I don't think was ever in question...or at least shouldn't have ever been in question. Offensively Pennington was a big ???, but he's playing like we all knew he was capable of 3 years ago. The WRs are obviously talented and the O-line is doing a great job in pass protection. The run blocking will come, but it's a harder thing to do and it takes time to build that chemistry. There's not much talent in the RB position, that much is obvious. But Leon Washington could be a nice sleeper as his style fits the Jets O pretty well. As the season goes on, expect the Jets running game to get better...not prime cut by any means...but better. Bottom line is that the Jets are NOT a bad team...and should finish with 7 or 8 wins. Possibly 9 if the beat all the teams they "should" beat on the schedule. It's a heckuva easy schedule that's for sure.ETA - by no means am I insinuating that they can or will beat the Colts this weekend. The Colts are far superior right now. But it IS the NFL and stranger things have happened.

Good post -thanks. Do you expect that Leon Washington will become the starting RB any time soon? Or will this likely be a committee type approach. I haven't seen Washingtonplay yet, but I'm intrigued with what I've read and heard about him. Thanks.

Honestly, that's hard to say. I think he's the best "fit" but that doesn't mean he's a 25 carry/game guy. Barlow will have his touches...if for no other reason than that they need to justify giving up an early draft pick for him. But I think you'll see more and more of Leon as the season goes. I think a 50/50 split this week is about right...but it's just a guess. I do think that Leon will be more productive with his touches though. Against Indy, I think he'd be a good Flex start. I'm seriously debating starting him as my RB2 in a 14 team league this week over Morris. Especially now with the talk that SA could actually see some carries. Although I don't buy that. But I digress. Leon is a good/great talent...just not a prototypical NFL RB size wise.

Wow, one 47-yard play where Leon Washington slipped some JV tackling and he's suddenly going to be the Jets feature guy? Mangini says in coachspeak, Yeah, he looked pretty good, if that continues we'll grow his role?

The guy is a 200-lb change of pace back. Perfectly suited for thrid downs. But let's not go calling him the next Adrian Murrell.

The Jets still need to control clock with a pounding running game to keep games close. That means a steady does of Barlow or Houston, whichever power back is healthy. If they fall behind by 10 to 14 points and need to play catchup, then you'll see a lot of Leon Washington.

Bingo.

agreed. L.Washington has to be a Dave Megget before he can grow into a Tiki Barber, if he's even that good.
