Upgrade Ronnie Brown with Saban gone (1 Viewer)

It seemed to me that Saban was more than sympathetic to Ricky Williams. In fact, I think 30+ other head coaches would have thrown Ricky's phone number in the trash after Ricky's most-recent hiccup.

With Saban out of the picture, does Ricky's chances of playing for the Dolphins decrease dramatically?? I would assume so. My primary fear is Ricky's very reasonable salary. If I remember correctly, he's under contract for essentially vet minimum.

NOTE ~ Sorry if HONDA

I don't necessarilyagree. Williams shouwed that he could still play, owes Miami millions of dollars, and has a contract for the league minimum. Long story short, he's still a decent RB and is dirt cheap. Sure, he has warts and flaws, but it won't cost much to keep him around and he could be useful.

 I'm one to think that pretty much the majority of the coaches have man-love for the rastafarian. He still has ability and is cheap. Whoever the next coach is in Miami will definitely keep RW. Cheap talent is always good schtick. I'd downtick Brown as well.

And, of course, there is always the flip-side of this, which is that Ricky Williams could be traded...
Realistically, what would RW's trade value be? It can't be much. Any team that gets him knows he is one step away from being done with football. Certainly he won't fetch a first day draft pick. I would guess a 5th or a 6th rounder with a conditional clause that could bump it up to a 4th in Williams behaved and hit certain playing milestones.Given that, IMO Miami would be foolish to give up a proven RB that could share the load (or carry it if Brown got hurt) for close to nothing. Remember that many other RBs have been on the block the past few years and most carried very little interest trade wise.Ricky could be moved if a team wanted to part with something worthwhile, I just don't know how high another team would value him or how low the Dolphins would go to get rid of him.

Let me clarify my stance...

I believe Brown's '07 value has increased over the past 24 hours (ie. when Saban was still coach). I believe there's still a strong chance Ricky will be a Dolphin next year. However, I do not believe he will be given the same slack Saban may have cut.

Just a FYI...

Only three other teams (OAK, DET, CLE) had fewer rushing attempts than the Dolphins in '06. Even if Ronnie loses 8-10 carries per game to Ricky (as opposed to 3-5 carries to Sammy Morris), he should still be more productive than in '06.

I think the bigger reason to upgrade Brown is that hopefully a new coach would make a better commitment to the running game. Brown did well when he had the carries and so did the Dolphins. It was the games when they gave Brown 10-15 carries that the Dolphins struggled.

As far as Williams he turns 30 this year and didn't exactly light the CFL on fire. He had 2 injuries in 2006 and is close to another suspension in the NFL. Also, despite missing time from his retirement he still has some mileage from college and some years in the NFL with significant carries. Bottom line--Williams is a 30 year old flake RB with injury and drug issues.

I am going to watch how the organization handles finding a replacement, and who that replacement is, before I upgrade or downgrade any of the Dolphins players.....

After Ricky was banished to - and got injured in - Canada this year, I don't see how Brown's value could be any higher vis-a-vis Ricky than it already is. Ricky is about like Stephen Davis was a year or two ago in terms of value, and he's now on the wrong side of 30.

As a Ronnie Brown owner, the important thing here is that Mike Mularkey is presumably leaving Miami. There's no way that's not good news for Brown. The RW thing is going to play itself out either way.

Ricky was given slack because he's a very talented workhorse RB. He could possibly be the biggest fruit loop in the league but there is no denying the man can run the ball with the best of them.

He will no doubt split carries with Ronnie Brown next year.

Now whether he can keep his nose clean is another story in itself.
