(Rotoworld) Vernon Davis caught six straight passes at San Francisco's practice Thursday in a red zone drill.

Impact: Be afraid, NFL. Sure it's only minicamp season, but we've received multiple reports that Davis is catching on to the mental part of the game this offseason. Physically, he is already dominant. It wouldn't surprise us if Davis contends to be the second-best fantasy tight end this year.

No one doubts his talent. The problem with Davis is that he's already drafted as high as the elite TEs in dynasty leagues, so there's little upside at his ADP and a lot of downside.

Still, he's a good player to have on the squad.

 
This is good news.

The Niners are going to have a much better and more diverse offense this year with the new additions and seasoning of Davis.

I am really liking QB Alex Smith moving forward.

One thing I wonder about is if the 9er WRs will get a lot of targets or not. That could hold Davis potential value down if they do.

I am not sure if Davis will be the #1 target with DJax around.. will have to wait and see.

 
They loved him last year at this time too. I'd like to see this improvement in a preseason game first

 
I've done a lot of mock drafts lately (I'm really bored), and I've seen Davis go in the top 6 or 7 te's. And this is leaving Witten falling below him, which I find as tremendous value. I think that Witten can be a top 5 tight end, and if you can get him as the 8th TE, that is great value, especially since Gates is still going in the 3rd or 4th round, and Witten is going in the 8th or so.

yeah, ok pal.. ;) what was it now, a six-on-six drill? didn't Ryan Leaf look great in a minicamp? I'm sure Kordell Stewart did,too. and Aiki Smith, and Lawrence Phillips.people will write about anything in June, won't they? :lmao:

He was drafted before Vince Young in my league by someone who needed a QB.
 
From what I saw watching his last 4 games, combined with the insane athletic ability and speed, I will not be surprised if he is in the top 5 this season. However, his real value is long term. He has more upside than any TE in the game. This pre-camp hype doesn't change my opinion of him. I think he is going to be a beast long term.

 
OTA Thursday: Quarterback Alex Smith and tight end Vernon Davis have been in Santa Clara every day for the last two months during the offseason program. It shows. The two hooked up six straight times in Thursday's OTA practice including once in the end zone during a red zone drill. On the seventh pass, cornerback Nate Clements collared Davis after he dropped a tough chance that was also in the end zone.

"He's growing up where he's doing some things," Nolan said. Like most rookies, Davis was slowed by learning the offense. He had to learn the shifts, the routes and then the changes in the routes based on the coverage.

"There are things you need to know before the snap," Nolan said. "If you don't shift right, you can mess up the play for the whole offense."

Smith did burn some timeouts last year when Davis didn't shift correctly. Now, Davis does his pre-snap reads without a glitch and he's catching passes consistently.

"I feel comfortable, I feel like a vet. I feel like I have a leadership role now," Davis said, following Thursday's practice.

With Davis' greater knowledge of the offense, he could unleash his immense talents. Davis has gifts and he knows it, which is something Nolan is trying to temper.

When asked if Davis was putting on a show in Thursday's practice, Nolan said, "Did he? I don't know about that."

At least it did not say he dropped 6 in a row.

This news is hardly.... news but still V. Davis has tremendous potential. I have him on my Dynasty and he is not going anywhere. However, in my keeper and re-draft leagues, I likely will let others reach for him too early and look for value in that spot elsewhere.

One of the priorities for new OC Jim Hostler is to find ways to get the ball in Davis' hands. The difference from a year ago was stark. Last year, he did not catch the ball naturally. It looked as if he had meat hooks for hands. This year, he seems to be catching the ball with more ease

This doesn't sound good. How far apart are meat hooks and excellent hands. I'm assuming there are quite a few steps in between.

on a side note - I have him in a dynasty league and he will probably be a bust because he is being talked about as the 5th-6th best TE

:shrug: He HAS to breakout in order to validate where he is being drafted. Could he exceed his ADP? Sure, but I doubt by much, and I think he's more likely to not reach it than to reach it.I like his potential, sure. But I hate drafting guys like that who upside is their ADP and downside is a whole lot worse.

Learning the plays is going to be a big step in his growth.Once he becomes comfortable with that I think his natural ability will take over. He will eventually be the best TE in the NFL. I don't see it happening this year even being a 49ers homer and bragging that Vernon went to college in my home state, Maryland. He could very easily be top 5 this year though. I like the direction the Niners are heading and Vernon Davis is going to be a big part of getting San Francisco back on top. :lmao:

VD not being a natural pass catcher was always apparent to me when I was scouting him before his NFL Draft so not surprised he has and continues to struggle a bit. See post #5 in below thread for verification (from 4/20/06). http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...4&hl=offdee

Who the heck else is going to pass catches in that offense other than Gore and Jackson? Neither of those two guys are going to catch a lot of receiving TDs, so one can only assume that Davis should benefit from Alex Smith when he's in the red zone. Also helps that he runs a 4.3 and has a disgustingly low BF % while being 250+.

If his hands are up to par... I feel bad for linebackers as he comes over the middle for a pass.

comical post . . . no way he's better than Heap, Cooley, or even Gonzo . . . the above is typical training camp fodder . . . 99% of all players look great in camp . . .

 
I think Cooley and VD will begin to bring on a changing of the guard as far as TE dominance goes. I still think Gates will be the #1 TE, but both Cooley and VD have the potential for #2. Both are the #2 option in the passing game for their offenses, behind only teammates with injury concerns. Both are easily the #1 targets in the passing game in the red zone. And both are young, having monster camps and are only looking better.

 
Great future but have my doubts this year as he will get a lot of attention from defenses as teams aren't afraid of the SF WRs, even with the additon of DJax who is past his prime ... Gore will have to do an LT to take attention away from Davis

 
The buzz is that he's been the offensive MVP thus far during camp. Look for him to make major strides this season. A TE2 finish isn't out of the question.

I'm not as high on Alex Smith (I seem to be fighting 99% of the people on this board in that thought), which downgrades Davis a little on my draft sheet.

 
the big difference is that San Diego will score about as many TDs as San Fran and Wash combined so #1 is a long way off as of yet IMO

i do own both Gates and VDavis in a start 2TE league though!

 
Quick reminder that Alex Smith is still quaterbacking for the 49ers and an upgrade from him is far from a guarantee. Considering he just maybe will be throwing the ball to VD, it might be worth a little skepticism from hearing all this '#2 TE' being thrown around.

What in the world are you talking about? Jackson should be in the midst of his prime and Gore did a damned fine impression of LT last year when he caught 61 passes and ran for almost 1700 yards with a 5.4 ypc. You don't think Gates gets a lot of attention? Lots of attention means more scoring opportunities.

:thumbup: Alex Smith improved a great deal last season but he set a damned low bar the year before. He holds promise for the Niners but he is far from being a good quarterback.

As opposed to those stud KC and SD WRs :popcorn: ;)IMO he could be "all that" but because a lot of people are now thinking so, his price is only in line w/what he's worth at best. Guys like Cooley and Witten are much better value plays. However I'll probably again try for one of Gates, Gonzo, Heap, or Crumpler.

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers are attempting to prevent TE Vernon Davis from hitting the same pitfalls former 49ers WR Terrell Owens, currently with the Dallas Cowboys, hit. Davis is very receptive to hearing cautionary stories from those within the organization. There are questions on how Davis will handle any success he has in the NFL.

I am not either but I think that actually bodes well for Vernon Davis. Alex will have to lock in to one or two receivers and they only have Jackson and Davis.
