Vernon Davis...will he ever be used for catching passes again? (1 Viewer)

V. Davis has been highly disappointing. I know he stays in to block, but his Targets have dropped in the last month to the point of being un-usable.

Any chance Harbaugh decides to use him, or as long as they win running and keeping him in, do we expect no change?

I don't know about never again, but so far it seems pretty clear that the 49ers are content to use him primarily as a blocker. You'd think that eventually they would take more advantage of his pass catching ability but as long as they are winning I would not expect much to change.

I'm waiting to put a claim in for Celek and possibly start benching Vernon. I can't take these two point games and with so many games against that crappy division, this trend may continue. It's a shame, the guy is great.

Vernon is a victim of a run first system and his own great blocking skills....they are winning so I dont expect anything to change....I dont think he is a #1 TE any more - shame as he is a beast

I agree (and it pains me to say it as I own him in 2 leagues). SF is winning and their O looks good right now. looks like the plan is for him to be used primarily as a blocker and to only get a few targets a game. I wish with those few catches they would hit him on a crossing route or a bit deeper- he is good YAC.

He has posted no TDs and around 50 yds or less the last month....this is a guy who was projected to be a top 3 TE...its clear under Harbaugh he is not being used as a pass castching TE even if he gets lucky and snags a long pass now and then....time to deal for a top option if you have himand are going for it

I can see him being a target once they start trailing in games (example The Philly game 4/45/1) but until someone jumps out to a double diget lead I see the 49ers just keep doing what they are doing.

? Not true, they threw him one deep ball (maybe 15 yds) almost came down with it but was covered pretty tight.

i think the question davis owners - in dynasty formats - need to consider: will the 9ers keep smith for another season? kaepernick is supposed to be the heir apparent but, given the success they are having this season, it is very possible they retain smith for another season instead of transitioning to the kid.
