Should the Falcons ultimately win the case, any money received from Vick would be credited to the team's salary cap the following year. The windfall of cap space the Falcons would receive if Vick were to reimburse full payment would provide the them with enough money to pursue several front-line free agents.

The ramifications of this case could be profound, which is why the players' union immediately drew up papers to file an appeal of Burbank's decision.

Should the Falcons ultimately win this case, teams throughout the league could make use the same argument to recoup bonus money paid to players found to have violated terms of their contract. If Doty overturns Burbank's ruling, that would uphold the precedent in the Lelie case in which the only money Denver was able to recoup was the prorated portion of Lelie's signing bonus

ETA sorry for another vick thread

violation of contract=more cap room is not in the league's best interest IMO

I imagine Goodell fuming and Falcons and Bengals prosperring from this IF upheld

I don't think they'd address issues from previous years and I figure that's when he violated the terms. Seems he's in the punishment phase for lack of a better term.

IIRC, teams are allowed cap relief for players while serving a suspension. I believe teams are granted a temporary stipend for the amount that the player counts against the cap but that amount is taken away once the player is no longer suspended. However, I am not sure how that works beyond the season being played (so what happend to the signing bonus money).

I am pretty sure that teams that end up releasing players have to eat signing bonuses as a cap hit, but I am not sure what happens in cases where signing money is taken away from the player.
