Vikings Sign Bethel Johnson (1 Viewer)

I actually don't mind the signing. We need a returner. He does have some deep speed, so maybe Troy Williamson can be inactive now. :lmao:

Isn't this guy supposed to be UBER fast?

If so, he might be a nice compliment (read: replacement) to Troy as a deep threat.

If has more than 1 hand, and they're both not shaped like lobster claws or anvils, he's gotta be better than Troy.

Plus Williamson flat out sucks at KR duties. He's got wheels, just never uses em.

As I recall his stats were either 0 catch for 0 yards and 0 TD's OR 1 catch for 70 yards and 1 TD.

Good Returner.

One of the things that impressed Belichick the most is Johnson's speed for his size. The 5'11", 201-pound receiver runs an impressive 4.37 40-time, one of the fastest in the draft.

"He's fast, he's explosive, he's a good special teams player, and he's got some football in front of him," said Belichick. "I think that there's certainly some technique development that Bethel like any young player could absorb coming in here, but he's got a couple of things that you just can't teach."

"He's 200lbs, he's very fast, he's very explosive, he's a big time run after catch guy. He's certainly got some developing to do, but he's got some skills that not many other guys possess in terms of rare speed."

Rumor has it that the Vikings clocked him at 4.28 when they tried him out this past week.

That's a relief. I didn't think they were quite mediocre enough.
So you don't like this signing? This somehow makes them a worse team?
I didn't say that.
I guess I don't understand what you mean when you say "I didn't think they were quite mediocre enough" then.
I mean adding this mediocre player doesn't tip the scales one way or the other for this already mediocre team.

Yes, they are mediocre...but if Bethel can stretch the field by actually scaring Defense into having to account for him, (UNlike Williamson's robster craws) it should help open up the running game.I see you're from MN as well, so after watching them STINK the last 3 weeks on offense, you gotta admit their key to winning is running the ball. Plus, they need to get away from the 3 yard passes. It's just mind numbing to watch anymore. I'd ALMOST.....rather watch a Packer game.

This is a wide receiver who the 2006 Patriots didn't want on their roster.

Do you really need to know any more than that?

If he's anything like he is in Madden, I'll happily take his speed on kickoffs.

Plus Tarvaris Jackson will be our franchise QB. Hensen wasn't really ever gonna give us much. I'd rather take the shot on a super fast WR.

i drafted my redraft team this year using madden ratings.

Newcomer Bethel Johnson will get an opportunity to win the Vikings' kickoff and punt returning jobs this week, and he could see limited duty as a receiver as early as Sunday's game at Seattle.

Johnson recently recovered from a sprained knee he suffered while in training camp with New Orleans. The Vikings signed him Oct. 10, and Johnson, 27, spent last week working out at Winter Park with rookie quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

Monday, coach Brad Childress called Johnson an "excellent athlete" with "rare explosion" and suggested he will get a better chance to play receiver than he did while playing for New England from 2003 to '05.

"They had a pretty good stable of receivers there," Childress said. "He was kind of the fifth wheel."

New England traded Johnson to New Orleans during the offseason, but he suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament Aug. 26. He said Monday that his time in the 40-yard dash has returned to a figure "way below" 4.4 seconds and that he is eager to establish himself as "a receiver that can return the football."

Said Johnson: "In my previous opportunities, people slighted me and just thought I was a returner. But I was drafted [from Texas A&M] as a receiver. ... It wasn't as a returner that played wide receiver.

"I'm coming here to make an impact and not sit back and watch things."

Receiver Troy Williamson has averaged 23.3 yards as the Vikings' primary kick returner, but he might be better served to focus on offense. Running back Mewelde Moore is averaging 7.1 yards per punt return.

Thanks for posting this Reg. I was going to but you beat me to it. Interesting...I still like the signing both for returning and for our receiving corps.

Not a bad first game returning-wise. He should see more offensive snaps with MRob out and T & T dealing with concussions.

I agree. It wouldn's surprise me to see him get a lot of snaps this week. I think he has more talent than Billy McMullen. (I think McMullen must have pictures of Childress.) It would be nice to see if Bethel can add some vertical plays to the Vikes offnese.

I think losing MRob is the toughest hit at WR that the Vikes take this week. While he is inconsisten, he was finally developing into a threat anywhere on the field, and not just in the red zone as he has in the past.
