Vin Scully- Greatest sports broadcaster ever (1 Viewer)

From Friday night's broadcast:

“God’s been awfully good to me, allowing me to do the things I love to do. I asked him one more year, at least, and He said, 'OK.' ”

As befits Scully, he made the announcement quite casually, between innings. It's truly remarkable that this man was the Dodgers broadcaster when they won their first world championship in 1955. He covered Don Larsen's perfect game in the World Series, all of Sandy Koufax's games, and the list goes on and on. He is arguably the possessor of the greatest broadcasting voice in American popular culture, sports or otherwise. And he's one of the few public figures on this planet whom everybody seems to love.

I hate the Dodgers with every fiber of my being; however, I have a ton of respect for Vin. Listening to him call a game is a pleasure.

Scully is the greatest sports broadcaster still living, I can agree with that.

Harwell, Barber, Allen and Jack Buck are in the conversation about greatest ever, it is far from a slam dunk.

:goodposting: They are all terrific, and while its fun to argue who is the best, its sort of silly. What is not silly is how much guys like John Sterling suck compared to the great ones listed above. I bet Vin Scully hates John Sterling.

Per usual DD bringing the perspective.Obvs I'll always be partial to the Voice of the Turtle, but the GoAT is a wide open debate.

I don't think I've ever agreed with a post in the FFA as much as I agree with this one.

I wasn't really trying to make an argument with the title. With the exception of Buck, I haven't had the good fortune to hear most of the others, so how could I say? It's difficult for me to imagine a better sportscaster than Vin, but that's because I've been lucky enough to listen most of my life.

Barber preceded Scully in the Dodgers booth and Harwell replaced Barber at one point as the Dodgers announcer when Barber was ill. The Dodgers actually traded a catcher to get the rights to Harwell which is an amazing and unique story. Scully, Allen, Harwell and Barber were all broadcasting for New York teams in the early 50s as Harwell had the call for the Giants, Scully and Barber for the Doyers and Allen for the Yankees. Incredible. Of the living guys I have always liked **** Enberg and actually know some people in his family. I like John Miller and Gary Danielson as well, I think they are both consistently sharp and articulate.

He is great, but the best ever is Harry Caray.
???That guy sounded drunk all the time.
Which contributed to his awesomeness. I wouldn't rank Carey in the top five or maybe even top ten, but he was one of the more entertaining guys that has ever been involved in sports broadcasting. He called a good game too.ETA: Wouldn't not would

It's too bad that his son turned out to be such a doosh. I mute the games he broadcasts because I don't want to throw things at my beautiful tv.

There may be a few guys people could argue who are/were as good as Scully, but I don't think you can say anyone is any better than him. Loved listening to him do tv by himself when I used to have the baseball package!

I grew up listening to three voices in my life- my Dad, Chick Hearn, and Vin Scully.

I'll never grow tired of listening to the smooth tone of Vin Scully.

I have to give props to anyone who tries to make broadcasted baseball interesting. They never really suceed but thanks for trying.

Its hard to find - because MLB hates its fans - but Vin Scully's eulogy of Ernie Harwell on air is brilliant. Its so Vin. And Ernie.

It was broadcasting at its finest and if MLB didn't do everything it possibly could to alienate its fans, you could watch the video. But, at least here's the transcript:

According to you.
:goodposting:
Yeah and what makes the title even more foolish is the original poster has likely never even heard 99.9% of the sportscasters in the world. He might of had a tiny foothold had he limited it to baseball, in America, living on the West Coast but decided not to I guess.

I love Vin, but I hate that he had to bring god into it. If he dies in the next year, does that mean god lied to him?
