Since being drafted by the Titans in April 2006, quarterback Vince Young has talked about the importance of camaraderie and establishing chemistry with his teammates.
This week he's putting his money where his mouth is.
Young invited a number of the team's receivers to Houston to work out and spend the week together in his hometown. Young took care of the airfare and hotel costs. The receivers are responsible for catching his passes and working more on getting on the same page.
Young couldn't be reached for comment on Wednesday, but two of the receivers who traveled to Houston said it was the quarterback's idea.
"And he wasn't going to take no for an answer," receiver Brandon Jones said. "At first I was like, 'I can't get down there until Wednesday,' and he was like, 'No, no, get your butt down here.' Everybody had to put their excuses aside and we are now here and having fun and working.
"Vince thought it would be a good idea to keep working, and it's definitely beneficial in a number of ways."
Players on their own
The Titans wrapped up their last minicamp May 31, but they aren't scheduled to be back on the field for another organized workout at Baptist Sports Park until June 19.
In the meantime, players continue to work out in Nashville as part of the team's offseason training program. Because of conflicting travel schedules during the offseason, however, it's difficult for quarterbacks and receivers to be together during a week when a minicamp isn't scheduled.
So Young decided to invite the receivers to Houston. Along with Young and Jones, third-year receivers Courtney Roby and Roydell Williams are also in Houston, as is undrafted rookie Clinton Solomon. Because of the late notice, however, others couldn't make it.
"Once I heard they were thinking about doing this, I wanted to be a part of it, and I switched some things around to make it happen," Roby said. "It is good to get away and into a new element and continue training and building more of a bond. It is something that will definitely help us."
Nice routine
Most arrived Monday, while Jones joined the group Tuesday. The players are scheduled to work out through the week, with the possibility of tight end Bo Scaife joining them.
The players are staying in a hotel down the street from Young's house. Each morning, the quarterback picks them up, and the day begins with running, where they're put through a workout with Young's personal trainer, James Cooper.
Later they head to a football field, where they spend time working on routes. Then it's to the pool for another workout.
"Things that may have come up during the (practices in Nashville) that we thought were good or things we might want to change, we'll talk about those," Roby said.
The players also have spent time hanging around one another in the evening.
This fall, the Titans are looking for the group of receivers to step up following the departure of Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade, the team's top two receivers last year.
Jones firmly believes some of the things taking place off the field will pay off this fall.
"Stuff like this, it helps more than you know," Jones said. "And right now that is what Vince brings to the club • he helps establish the camaraderie, and it makes guys feel more like a family.
"A couple of years ago, it didn't necessarily feel like a family; you feel like an outsider, you just go to work. But now there's a different feel now because we are all getting to know each other, and you'd be amazed with how much that helps on the field."
