Virginia Beach, any info? (1 Viewer)

fantasycurse42

Footballguy Jr.
We've been offered a free week in Virginia Beach next month, it's about 6 1/2 hours from us.

Is it worth going with the wife & 2 little boys? What is there to do around there?

TIA

VA Beach kind of sucks, but some decent day trip options around there -- Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown are good if you/your family are into history-type places.

There's a big beach.

A small aquarium.

History stuff up in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.

Busch Gardens and a water park also up in Williamsburg.

Norfolk has a battleship that you can tour.

You would get to drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

You could swing by Assateague Island on the way and see wild horses.

The kids are 1 & 4, this is sounding like a huge fail.

ETA: DG's post provides a little hope

You can take young kids anywhere and they'll have fun. What type of stuff are you looking for them?
The first two responses have history stuff as the key selling points for this place, they're too young to get much out of that and the 7 hours would be too much.

Big beach, wild horses, amuse, ent park is more towards their liking.

It's a decent size metropolitan area. I'm sure you can find whatever you want. There's nothing super awesome or special about the area, though.

How long would you be there?

7 days, but nothing to stop us from leaving earlier.
Yeah, 7 days would be a lot. If you like road trips, the beach, free lodging, and going new places, I don't see a reason not to go. Like I said, the area will have all the normal stuff to do in any city. Things are a bit spread out, though. For example, if you want to do Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, that's about an hour away without traffic. It would be a good way to spend one day, but not sure if you'd want to make that trip twice since it would be over 2 hours round trip.

Geezus ...whatever happened to a week on the beach being ####### awesome???

Some of my best vacation memories as a kid were completely beach related - we got up late (10am or so ...had breakfast and walked out right onto the beach.  Played on the beach and ocean until late lunch ...then went back out to the beach.  Came in around 5-6pm, got cleaned up and went to Morrison's Cafeteria where everyone could get whatever they wanted.

It's where dirt meets water.

Virginia Beach isn't worth paying for, but it might be worth it to go for free.  I have lived there several times since 1997 and now that I am out of the military, I will never go back voluntarily.  There just really isn't all that much to do.

The beach itself is nothing much.  Ohhhh, its water and sand.  there is a boardwalk with overpriced junk being sold.  Its nice to walk it or bike it, I guess, but don't expect anything you can't get anywhere else up and down the east coast.  I have heard during soft shell crab season, (now-ish?)  its one of the best places to get that, but i'm allergic to shellfish, so I never tried it.

Entertainment - well, everything that I could even think of has been mentioned.  If you need an indoor day, Lynnhaven Mall isn't the worst place to go if its raining out.  Its not too far from the beach.

Food - I mentioned the crabs, but not sure if my memory is right as to the time of year.  If I were to go back, which I hope I never do, I would make a point to go to two places.  both a few miles up Virginia Beach Boulevard on the right.  One place is called Duck Donuts.  You special order them at the counter and they make them in front of you.  Doesn't get more fresh than that, and they have good options, and really taste awesome.  You likely only need one per person, but if you are a fatass, you could put down two.  I would definitely go to Wing King. Its a little farther up va beach blvd next to the burger king.  Great wings.  Probably the best I've ever had with a decent selection of beers and not too expensive.  There is a batting cage right behind it, but 4 might be a little young for that.

There are air shows in the area from time to time.  You can look it up and see if there is an air show the time you will be there.  Oceana is really close and kids always love air shows (bring hearing protection), but it would be pure coincidence to be going on while you are there.  If you do have the chance, though, its likely worth the trip by itself.

If I think of anything else, I will update.  I really hated living there, but it was more because of the extreme population of military and ex-military, bad traffic patterns and lots of young drivers as a recipe for annoyance.

Jesus, what a bunch of miserables sots in here.

Virginia Beach is actually a big place - so it depends on what you are looking to do.  Sandbridge is more of a family area - houses on the beach type area.  The main strip may be a little less family-friendly - more commercial, but its still a beach.  As kids go, they generally don't need much more than sand, sun and water to have fun.

Having said that, I grew up in the area, and when we wanted to get away - we always went to the Outer Banks in North Carolina - more pure beach get-away.

One nice thing there - I've never seen so many dolphins anywhere else.  I stayed there about five years ago.  When we woke up in the morning we could see dolphins from our hotel room and when we went swimming (particularly in the morning) we could see dolphins further out in the water.  If I go again (and if it's as calm as last time), I would definitely rent a stand-up paddle board and paddle with the dolphins.  Not exactly an ideal activity for a one and four year old though.

You can also rent bikes and ride them along the 'boardwalk' (which I think I remember being paved).  Picture something that isn't exactly beautiful, but is at least a couple of steps up from something like the Atlantic City boardwalk.  I'd be a bit hesitant to put a one year old in a baby bike seat, but plenty of people definitely do.

It's a beach.  It's not the best.  It's not as horrible as some here are making it out to be.  Your kids will think it's great because....they're kids and it's a beach.  Plus...it's FREE.

If you do go, I used to love Waterman's restaurant.  I'm assuming it's still there.  It's been ~10 years since I was there.  Great food, nice atmosphere, right on the beach.

ETA:  Yes - Waterman's is still there.  The Waterman's burger is awesome.  (Burger w/ a crab cake on top)  When I was in college at UVa I used to sometimes drive out to VA beach on the weekends, hang out and study on the beach, then drive back.  Made reading text books more bearable.

Rodanthe or Ocracoke for me.

O'Connor Brewing Company is in Norfolk. Virginia Beer Company is in Williamsburg. Also in Wburg is Pierces BBQ. For the kids in Wburg - Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor waterpark with slides and all that jazz. And they have a bar. Yes, I like to drink some beers.

I lived in Newport News for two years, never again.

I don't think the complaints relate to beaches per se, but just Virginia Beach.  I think if you asked most people that lived in the driving distance area for a list of best places in the area to go to the beach, most would say the Outer Banks, some of the beaches in Delaware, Ocean City, MD (and possibly others) before getting down to Virginia Beach.

Pierces=overrated. My friends own VBC, great place/beer. Lots of good beer in the area. Commonwealth Brewing in VB is incredible. Reaver Beach too.

Yet millions (literally) visit VB every year. I live an hour away and never go there (oceanfront). Drove down the strip once not too long ago (off season) and that's been the closest I've come in decades. I'm not really a beach person though so there is that.

My friends own VBC, great place/beer.
I met Robby last month at a wedding in Cincinnati. Seems like a good dude. I'm up in the metro DC area and don't make it down south very often but want to swing by VBC at some point.

Robby is great. And he's loving life. He and co-owner Chris make a great team. Did he wear his VBC shirt to the wedding? Kidding...I know he wouldn't do that. Maybe. Wouldn't shock me if he wore a tux. He's the great promoter though.

I wasn't a fan either - but they do have a decent outlet mall if you like shopping.
I hardly ever go to the outlets. There used to be 2 places. An indoor outlet mall, which is now gone, and the "Prime Outlets". That place is always crazy busy.

I would go if someone offered me a free week there. Virginia Beach is a little over 4 1/2 hours from me here in NC.

Was just in Orange Beach Alabama a month ago.  The only time we left the beach was to get beer and food. Went out to eat a few times and hit a couple happy hours but that is about it.  Even then we never drove more than 10 minutes.

Ha, no but he was wearing it around the city. I think him and some of his buddies hit a couple breweries before the nuptials. When I met him it was a bit later at the reception and I was hammered. I think I actually misheard him when we were introduced and thought his first name is Will or Willey  :bag:

That's our "go to" beach.  We get groceries once we get there, eat breakfast and lunch in most days and go out for dinner.  We are good for a trip to the go-kart track though.

It was a great place to grow up in the 70s-80s before it became the sprawling mess it is now. Moved away years ago and have gone back just a couple of times. The people I know who that still live there still do what they've always done for fun: drink and/or go do beachy activities. Other than any special events that might be occurring and may coincide with your stay, there is really not a hell of a lot great things to do there. I think your kids might be a tad young to actually enjoy what most parents would enjoy doing with kids there. If they were a little older there's waterparks, go-kart places, miniature golf...stuff like that. If you and they like playing on the beach, that's pretty much what there is to do. Everything else is stuff you can do anywhere else.

I lived in Norfolk for a few years, hung out in VA Beach a lot.  Initially I was going to say "yeah, lots to do" to your question.  Then I saw it would be a very long drive for you, so was going to shy away from that a bit.  Then I saw you have a 1 and 4 year old - likely not the best move, even if free.  It ain't worth all that.

Where is your room?

From the area......kind of blows but free could make it work.

Lived there from 2003 to 2014.

  • If your family likes to go to the beach, it has that, obviously. I would think this is the main attraction with 1 and 4 year olds.
  • There are usually bands playing at the oceanfront outside for free on weekend nights.
  • On weekends, there are often things going on at the oceanfront, like art festivals, etc. Depending on timing, there might be something fun there.
  • Someone mentioned air shows. Agree those are worthwhile if timing is right, though probably a long shot.
  • Someone mentioned the aquarium. As stated, it is small, yet it might be a great thing for 1 and 4 year olds.
  • There is a zoo also. Same deal as the aquarium, small but maybe enjoyable for your kids.
  • Someone mentioned Busch Gardens, and that is fun and drivable, but not sure it works well for a 1 year old.
  • You could go to Waterside in Norfolk, and check out the shops and whatever activities are going on, but it's been a long time since I've been there.
  • You can go on local cruises, like on glass bottom boats.
  • Lots of good food. East coast seafood is very good, especially crabs, but lots of other great food, too. Someone mentioned Duck Donuts and they are incredibly good. If you end up going, you can get some great recommendations in this thread.
Overall, not one of the greatest vacation spots on the East coast, but IMO a lot better than some of the negative posts in the thread made it seem. Especially with free accomodations; post-Memorial Day rates are pretty high, if you are staying anywhere decent or better.

A free week at the beach? Is it worth it? Absolutely.

The only reason I wouldn't pay to go there is the ramped up jet noise last time I was there. It was always there but the last time I went it was every half hour all day it seemed like.

Just to be clear, I don't think it's a terrible place to go. I think it'd be fun if the kids were a little older, or if you could go eat out with no issues, see bands, explore some, etc. Admittedly, I'm not an expert on what kids want to do for a week in VB though. My wife and I stayed at a nice hotel there with our friends and their young kids for a long weekend a few years back. I think they were around 6 and 3 years old. They had fun at the beach, but had had enough by the end of the weekend. They basically went to the beach and wanted to spend the rest of the time in the hotel room. I've had a lot of fun down there fairly recently going to Shakas on the strip and seeing bands. I also rediscovered and liked the very dive-y Baja Cantina. They have super cheap good food. Not a place for kids though. I never really went to the seafood places at the oceanfront much, and am not sure what's even good there anymore. There's a few down Shore Drive that were always pretty good. Bubba's is pretty popular. Honestly though, we mostly just caught our own seafood when I was there. JWB's post has some pretty good advice.
