Volvo car brakes on its own before hitting peds (1 Viewer)

"A spokesperson told the website DailyMail that the most likely scenario is that the XC60 used during the demonstration was quite simply not equipped with Pedestrian Detection."

My take away from this. Do not get run into by a Volvo, but if you do, pray that the Volvo has a human being strapped to the bumper as that human being provides substantial protection between you and the car.

The company added that, for safety reasons, it’s possible to override the Pedestrian Detection system by accelerating

Under what circumstances would this ever be used for safety reasons?

False positives? It starts breaking while on the interstate thinking it sees a human, but nope, a stick!

Zombie Apocalypse. Some times you need to mow those critters down.
Or mowing through people dressed as zombies at a ComicCon event.
Either way. Also handy for going over crotch rocket a-holes on the Long Island Expressway.

This reminded me of back in the early 2000's, Mercedes came out with one of the first collision avoidance systems for their cars. They were going to show a demo of it to the public by driving something like 6 cars back to back, have the front one hit the brakes and watch all of the cars stop by themselves. So they lined them up, jammed on the brakes, and every single $120k car slammed into the back of the car in front.

Turned out that the cars shipped to the demo didn't have the system installed. But they decided to go ahead with the demo anyway and just have the drivers brake hoping to fool the crowd into thinking it was the car that did it. Whoops.

That was bad. But standing in front of a car and getting hit takes the cake. :lmao:

Pedestrian avoidance, blind spot detection, cross-traffic back-up monitoring...all this "crap" on new cars is why decent cars cost 50% more than they did a few years back. I hope that manufacturers continue to offer things like this as an option, because otherwise it'll add $5K to the cost of a car. I priced out one of the new Volvo XC90's, and the amount you could spend on all this safety stuff is nuts.

Call me old fashioned, but I've been fine for 20 years with 3 mirrors and my own reflexes. I don't want to become dependent on all this gadgetry. Jesus I sound old....

And not to sound coldhearted, but some of this stuff is dumb. Like when they were trying to put airbags on the hood so if you hit someone they wouldn't crack their head on your car. Why am I paying for their safety?

No kidding. My dad's detection system stopped working and the next day he backed into something. Just got used to hearing the sound.

My wife went from driving a car with the beepers to one with a camera. I was so afraid she was going to hit something, because for a while, she would just back-up blindly expecting beeps. Now she looks JUST at the camera. I know a lot of people do that, but I honestly still prefer to just turn around. I guess I was always taught that you look where you're going.
