Waiver Wire DEF/ST play of the week (1 Viewer)

For those of you that don't waste a lot of time on drafting a DEF/ST on draft day, and search the waiver wire for matchups to plug in your def....or who have a solid DEF with a bad matchup that week....lets discuss the DEF/ST plays for week 1

DEF/ST that are likely available and have good matchups for week 1:

Lions DEF: plays against Atlanta, Licking their chops to see the rookie QB Matt Ryan.

Cardinals DEF: playing SF 49ers. Martz typically doesn't protect the QB well, and throws it a lot. Chance for INTs and Sacks.

Broncos DEF: going against the Raiders, with inexperience at QB (Russell) and not a lot of points to be scored.

Jets DEF: at Miami. Pennington and company may not gel this early, and Ricky is starting at RB. Jets DEF should be improved this year.

Of those teams, which do you like the best week 1...or name your sleeper DEF/ST for week 1.

I'm not really sure RW starting for Miami is a plus for the Jets.

I also like the Bengals D vs Balt. Rook RB and if not a rook QB, an inexperienced one. I expect some missed blocks by the backs as well as long/poor reads by the QB and several t/o opps. Ravens should be a run 1st, then run 2nd team, playing from behind.

Adding NO @ home vs. TB

The Saints have added some decent talent to the D this year, and may surprise (vs. ADP)

Garcia - if he's healthy enough to start - hasn't played for a LONG time. Galloway is dinged, so A Bryant is their go to WR?

I see NO going up early, and the 'rusty' Garcia forced to play catch-up.

Good call. :) And they have a great playoff schedule at the end of the year. I'm just fearful this will turn into a shootout though. Who is replacing David at CB this year?

You could be right, but he hasn't played a full game for awhile now. I guess RB will spell him if he wears out.

Eagles are 7 point favorites at home vs the Rams. Rams don't normally seem to do that well on the road and the Eagles have added Asante Samuel to their secondary.

Not after the recent hurricane scare. Remember what happened to the team the last time a hurricane came through, and they spent time on the road? The demise of Joe Horn, A.Brooks and the whole team. After spending time on the road this week, I'm avoiding the savvy Garcia and Chucky combo coming to town.

:boxing: Bulger has really not been very sharp in game action in preseason plus SJax has yet to get a carry....I could easily see a couple of fumbles.

It's also a pretty veteran team that may, or may not need preseason work. FWIW, I just dropped the Eagles to pick up Cincy for week 1.

The Saints' DBs are still horrible. Their badness outweighs the badness of any offense they'll face this year.

I think I'm dropping Balt DEF and going with the Cards DEF in week 1. Ed Reed is doubtful and that def isn't what it used to be

I don't know if the Colts defense qualifies because I think they are good, but I did get them off the waiver wire this week...plus, they play the Bears!

does cincy actually have an eligible team def, or has it been removed from most fantasy leagues?
No, they are as pitiful as it gets on D. Problem is, Baltimore's offense may be worse ;) and defenses are ahead of the offense this time of year.

I like the Arizona call. I think Denver will have a very poor defense this year and the Raiders will be very run heavy which will limit the mistakes of Russell though.

I'm a Broncos homer, so take this with a nugget of salt. I think they're much improved, based primarily on their scheme change and secondarily on some slight personnel improvement. If Cutler can get the Broncos out to an early and growing lead, watch out.

I was feeling good about ARI until I saw last years final score. Our league gives negative points after 24 pts vs your def. Now I'm having second thoughts.

Maybe Cinci is the better play? I doubt Balt scores 20 pts, even on the Bengals

i'm full on the bengals D bandwagon this week. i just can't figure out how the ravens are going to score on anyone in their current state.

Only reason I've hesitated on the Bengals (and I'm a homer) is that they've traditionally done poorly against inexperienced QBs. (Shaun Hill, Bruce Gradowski). They always play down to their competition.

Balance that with the fact that they've owned the Ravens lately, and this is a division rival, so they should be up for it.

A positive for playing Tenn 'D/ST' is Chris Johnson returning KO's and punts.

 The only reason their run D is decent is because teams can just pick on their corners all day.

I think the Jets will beat Miami, but I don't think Miami is going to be a pushover this year.

I don't know where they finished in your league, but FBG seems to have SEA around the middle of the road. If they're available, they have Buffalo in week 1. If they're not avail, sorry.

I like Oakland against Denver. Though depending on your league they may not be available on the waiver wire.
i gotta disagree here. i'm VERY high on Cutler this yr. and while B.Marshall may be out, I can see Cutler taking over the game early. IF the Denvers D can contain the OAK run, and put the game in Russell's hands, then the OAK D will spend a lot of time on the field. OAK does have a good high $$$ Defense, but not this wk, imo.

I think this is a trap considering it's @ BUF and Bernard and Babineaux are both out/suspended. Buffalo will put up 24 points or so, run a lot, and limit turnovers. I drafted Seattle but will prob drop them.

Denver couldn't stop anybody's run last year. Not sure what has changed. If Cutler tries throwing the ball a lot without Marshall there he'll be eaten alive.

I had just posted a thread on the Bengals defense.....a rookie QB, at best average WR, and a rookie RB just screams turnovers and few points.

Arizona intrigues me as well....

I like Arizona as well because even if it is a shootout, the Martz-orchestrated 20 step drops and high passing ratio should lead to, at worst, some sacks and picks to neutralize the points.

The FP matchup tool is generally very, very good. The best waiver defense on it is Arizona. So I'm going with them. The mad genius always gives up sacks and picks.

As another homer, I have to disagree. Bates's scheme failed because Denver has a pathetic D-line. Putting an 8th man in the box compensates for that somewhat, but until the Broncos gets some legitimate defensive lineman (aside from Dumervil on passing downs), they are going to be bad. Bailey and Bly are good, but no corner can cover indefinitely.

and because:1) Their OLBs tended to overpursue

2) The defense as a whole didn't buy in to the run contain system (in fact, they abandoned it during the bye week last year)

This year the scheme is better, the personnel are better, and the personnel fits the scheme better.

I'm not saying the Broncos are going to be a starting caliber FF defense this year, but they may be a viable spot start for those of us using a committee.
