Waiver Wire Team Defenses (1 Viewer)

Sure, there are people who picked up the Packers or the Steelers in the mid rounds of the drafts, and even those who are relying on the team defense by committee approach. Personally, I don't like passing up on a high upside player or wasting two roster spots on a defense...so I usually just grab a team at a time and hope for the best. With week one coming up, I think there are two options from the waiver wire that will be good choices...

1. Arizona Cardinals - The Cardinals are historically better at home, and they are playing a rookie QB in his first appearance. Things could possibly go horribly wrong for the Cards in this game, but odds are they will hold Carolina to under 20 points and probably pick up at least a few turnovers. Plus, the great thing about a running quarterback is that you pick up at least a decent amount of cheap sacks.

2. San Fran - They are playing the Seahawks, who are widely expected to have one of the worst offenses in the league, with a starting quarterback who has never proven anything. San Francisco doesn't have a terrible defense, and they do seem built to win low scoring games...but their offense is so bad, it could open the door for a high scoring game if they are consistently losing the field position battle.

Personally, I think I'm going to go with the Cardinals this week, mainly because I see them as a team that I think I can hold on to for the next few weeks with their cupcake schedule. As a Panthers fan, it pains me to go against my team, but I just don't see a way that the Cards don't at least put up respectable numbers.

Any thoughts on other options that may be available?

Without Manning, I expect the Colts to look pretty anemic against the vastly improved* Houston D.

Even with Manning it could be ugly since he's been sidelined so long.

*it's only preseason, but still . . .

Drafted the Cardinals in the last round of my draft for that cupcake schedule. 3 games back to back to back - Cam Newton, John Beck/Rex Grossman, Tarvaris Jackson. Definitely gonna score some points in those games. Not to mention, they play Alex Smith and Tarvaris Jackson twice, along with Andy Dalton, Donovan McNabb, and Colt McCoy. 8 of their 16 games are against quarterbacks who are known to make mistakes or they are young. They have 2 very tough games where they have to go into Philly and Baltimore, and three harder games where they host the Steelers, Giants, and Cowboys.

Giants prob aren't on the waiver in a good amount of leagues. They can be a good one this year in a lot of matchups..

I'm rolling with Arizona as well. Three good match ups then jump on someone else's train.

I like to look ahead when getting these D's and try to grab a juicy matchup a week in advance if it's later in the season and I have my roster nailed down allowing me to waste a spot on an extra D.

I also like Cleveland in week1 against Cincy.
Check out Cleveland's first 8 games! You could potentially go 4 weeks until you have to do something about them.vs. CIN (real juicy with a greenhorn QB in the pound)@ Indi (Manningless)- Collins/Paintervs. MIA (Marshall could still do some damage but it's home...)vs. TENNBYE WEEK@ Raidersvs. SEA@ 49ersLater games with Jags, Bengals again, CardsKeep tossing around if I want to open with HOU vs. Manningless Colts or CLE vs. Dalton and co at Cinci

Actually looking at Cleveland's schedule if they are ready they might be contenders by week 8.....

I liked ARI, endd up with NY Giants for this week.

The pick that I see often enough not just here but which I don't get is SF vs SEA. I get the impression SF's offense is going to be terrible, even worse than SEA's.

I've got the Cardinals for a few weeks for the reasons mentioned above. A lot changes in the NFL from year to year, but one thing that stays constant is that bad QBs and rookies are manna for fantasy defenses. Great point about the "free sacks" from a running QB; I think you're correct in how the NFL scores those plays.

Atlanta and Arizona actually looks like a great pairing for the season if you're willing to carry two. That said, we won't really know the truly awful teams and strong defenses for a few weeks anyway. Just another reason to save D for the 2nd to last round.

Got in late on defense in my last draft and took both Atlanta and Arizona. Between the two the schedule is wicked good.

picked up CLE in a couple of leagues with their relatively easy schedule (hopefully plus a healthy Cribbs)

looked at TEX and ARI, too

I picked up Atlanta in the last round & they're available in most leagues. I like them to finish in the 9-12 range.

I like the Giants vs Was this week.
Funny I like Washington against the Giants this weekCurious to know why you think the Giants are either on the WW which this thread is for, or they are a good start with those injuriesIn preseason action the Redskins have already caused 12 sacks, and 5 turnovers. They limited the starting offenses of the Steelers and Colts to 3 total points. The Ravens starters in an entire half did put up 14 on us. The Giants are injured and reeling, Eli's thrown too many INT's already this season. We added the most ball hawking safety over the last 5 years in OJ Atowege and a lot of new starters on DefenseBesides me being a homer I believe the SOS of the Redskins this year makes the defense a sick sleeper and a good start against the Giants this week

I was just given a team that is probably one of the worst I've ever seen (best RB is Benson), so I'm taking it as a challenge to get into the playoffs. The defense this guy selected was the freaking raiders, and everybody else has 1-2. This week I'm starting the Browns, dropping the raiders, and will probably roll them out week 2 when they play Indy as well.

Will probably drop Roy Williams, seriously, for the Texans as I like their schedule throughout the season.

Initially I had the Giants in my lineup (yes, I know, not WW material), but the injuries are really starting to pile up there, they are on the road, and while Grossman is terrible, the Skins have been effective running the ball all preseason.

I made the decision to bench them for the 49ers bringing in the hapless TJax and the Seahawks.
