DENVER - On October 19th, Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker had surgery just to clean out the same right knee he had reconstructive surgery on 2 years ago.

I have just confirmed today through sources that it was recommended to Walker to have a micro-fracture procedure on the same knee as opposed to just a cleaning. I will have more later on the medical implications of that decision.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. Terry Glenn was in the same situation this season. He was given the option of shutting it down for the season and having microfracture surgery right away, or getting his knee scoped, and then having microfracture surgery at the end of this year or next.

I think in these situations, the scope is the quick fix to get the player back on the field. The microfracture option is more of a long-term solution.

Often, players that have serious knee ligament injuries (see Walker) will tear off significant amounts of cartilage as well, or see it wear down during the rehab process. The scope can clean up the damaged cartilage and remove any floating pieces, whereas the microfracture is intended to help the body actually regenerate more cartilage in the joint.
