Want to buy my son a watch for his wedding. Suggestions? Updated - Purchased (1 Viewer)

Link one of your watches. I'm willing to give anything a chance.
Obviously I am partially tongue in cheek with these posts and in no way am I spending anything near what Fantasycurse is. I have several watches, but none of them are all that expensive. Here are some:

You have my personal approval on 3 & 4.

For the people who don’t get the watch thing, I understand 100%. However I don’t think it’s fair to bash it. Most people likely have a car when a bicycle and public transportation works. They also probably don’t have just bare walls in their home. They have pictures, paintings, etc. I’m my point is obvious now that we all have things that we enjoy even though it’s not the most practical/cost effective/functional.

To me; Watches are interesting pieces of engineering that go on your wrist and in some cases have very interesting history. Rolex is probably the best example. There’s a couple of amazing stories from them in World War II for example. You can read about it a little bit in the Rolex Wiki page. The other interesting thing to me is where the 100+ year company is at now. Link. I think some of the stuff they have/do is amazing. Then there’s Omega which made the watches for Astronauts.

Like I said at the top, I fully understand not buying one because I don’t even own one. To me the extra money I have goes to things like paying down my mortgage faster. But at some point I know I will cave in and buy one. To look down and see the history, technology and human capability is all wrapped up in this little thing is amazing. Maybe I’m just being a sappy fool though.

**Here is a link to an interesting read on Rolex.

I like the Arabics on #2

If you like watches enough to defend them on the Internet, you should try a mechanical watch.

They have all the function and aesthetics of a quartz watch but add a miniature spring & gear driven machine inside.  I'm still amazed by the level of precision required in even the cheapest movements.  I'm no snob though, I'm wearing a quartz watch now.

Not sure if it's a generational thing, but people using their phones for time (and phones die a lot) or have these Apple watches is for the birds.  I had a Fitbit until my friend's dog ate it, and I never used it for time.  I have ditched the traditional alarm clock in favor of a phone, but a watch is a simple and necessary pleasure IMO.

This is the Seiko Direct I bought, they no longer offer it but I like that one a lot.

I like those Shinola watches b ut spending $800 for a quartz might not be something I want to do.  Especially when you can get something like this for less than half that price.

I have one mechanical. It’s an Elgin from 1934, Art Deco style. I rarely ever wear it since it’s so old but i wind it up and it works fine. It’s in perfect shape.

this is my sentiment as well.

my current watch crush is the UK's Farer watchmaker. they do some fun, charming looking watches that are pretty affordable too.

That's like a cream-dial Alpinist.  I have no idea how the compass bezel works but it looks cool

My everyday watch is a Victorinox Swiss Army Chronograph i was given in the mid 90s. It has been all over the world with me and still has its original band. I would highly recommend Swiss Army watches for outdoor/sport watches. They are attractive, durable and moderately priced. I have a diver and an infantryman Swiss Army also, the diver being my favorite after I went to a rubber band.
Here it is, thought I needed to tweet about it I love it so much.

I wear it 4 days a week, always on the weekend, and even if I wear another watch during the day...I put this one on when I get home.

Probably a $250-$300 watch these days, ####### thing is pretty indestructible though.  When I was deployed to austere places I always made sure it got sun to charge the luminance so I knew what time it was in the pitch dark.

It works with what is called the old boyscout trick.  Point hour hand at sun, then rotate bezel so that the S (south) is halfway between 12 and the hour hand.  I do land nav in Michigan sometimes and I tried it two years ago, and it worked.  I also tried it to get a back azimuth, and it was surprisingly accurate.  You can actually do this with any watch, but the compass bezel function makes it easier since if you really needed to use it...you're ####### lost.

I'm a watch guy but I'd have to agree with the phone guys on this one.

my everyday beater watch is a Maratac auto that i bought probably 7 years ago. i'm too cheap to spend more than a grand probably on a watch but whatever. i just love the damn things. i'll get something nice for my boy maybe in time. he's 8 and seems to have taken an interest in them too.

Yeah until the towers go down because the Russians and stuff, and the phones are dead.  You're in the woods with two shotguns, a fat chick, and she ate your compass.  Employ the boyscout trick and you won't have to eat the woman.

That's a sweet piece.

So for Christmas I bought all my employees a gift certificate, and also bought them a $5 watch on Amazon.  I got like ten watches, and the only one I kept was this one which I thought was pretty cool.  It's a $1.10 watch that actually works!

So this one has been on my wish list since Christmas since I liked the design of that $1 watch.  Only reason I haven't bought it is the two batteries shtick.

I'd eat the woman first and then worry about where I needed to go

I'd go for the regular calendar window.  The date subdial looks cool but it's tough to read.
Done, bought #1. Now I have two automatic watches and one watch winder, things could get weird!

That watch gets all 5 star reviews and I have nothing that looks like it.  Reviews say they deliver within a week, just in time for my 30th birthday celebration. :D

I almost bought 1 when I bought my other Seiko.  Next week is my birthday, think I'll treat myself.

The problem with looking at watches online is there's always one I like better for more money.  I have way too many watches so I've cut my spending back to one or two sub-$100 pieces a year (mostly used).  But man, this SARX027 sure is purty

The seller Seiya has a great reputation in watch :nerd:   circles.

I've seen cocktail dials like that in J-town jewelry store windows.  The lights hitting the dial gives a nice effect.

Seems like these Seiko Japan pieces are among the best value out there.  I don't like the white face there, but that is a handsome watch.

I would buy more watches than I do but I can't take old faithful out of the rotation for long, and I also like my Swiss Army Diver quite a bit.

My favorite time piece is my grandfather's retirement pocket watch, it's amazing.  Hard to work in a pocket watch these days though.

Most of my life revolves around cocktails and cocktail waitresses, I think I'll like this one.

Oh and the best part of that transaction is...FBG paid for that watch.  I won a bunch of cash thanks to Sister Jean and the 50¢ NCAA pool here, that covered the purchase.  :hifive:

I have that VSA in red with the gunmetal bracelet. My favorite watch and gets more wear than my Cartier Roadster, Armida A1 Superdome, and the assorted other I have combined.

Damn some watches are expensive.  I'm super happy I'm not a watch guy, my taste align more with DD than FC42.  On watches that is, not an obsession with fat chicks.

I didn't wear a watch before cell phones either....

Thanks guys. Watch purchased. Stepped it up a bit after trying Tag, Hamilton and Oris. Ended up with a Ball Trainmaster. Looks great on him and he was blown away. Lists for $2695 got it for $1825.  Really appreciate the help.

Handsome watch. He should be stoked. My dad gave me a sweet Montblanc pen when I got my first real job promotion. I wish I hadn't lost it a few months later.

Otis doesn’t mind spending loot, but I’ll never get the expensive watch thing. They all tell time, and these look just as nice with my suit, and when they break or whatever I just throw them out and buy a new one (they used to be 80 bucks; damned inflation).

I think I am in the same boat.  Just saw this one as a “Suggestion” from your links.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y3L2SYX/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B06Y3L2SYX&pd_rd_wg=zu6St&pd_rd_r=S6HTVVMWTCAFXBYBEYBJ&pd_rd_w=6raT6

What do you guys think of that?  I think I am liking the blue face brown band ones Ive seen in this thread, but having a hard time pulling the trigger on something really expensive since I don’t wear them often.  Maybe ill start, but until then might as well go cheaper at first.

Blue face and brown leather band don’t work imo

So I got this today, took six days to get here from Japan which I think is pretty impressive.

The watch itself is quite handsome, it's a nice piece.  I like the size, it's not one of those 58mm Invicta numbers and also wouldn't be confused as a unisex watch.

The band is both ugly and cumbersome, a clasp with a pleathery leather black strap.  I'll change that out tomorrow for something more simple and elegant, which probably should have come with the watch.

Nice watch but I think they messed up the 7 on it.

Take it back.

Haven't read the update, but figured why bother.

It's a good watch, don't get me wrong, but you spent way too much. A real shark knows how to get value and not spend. Also, you didn't spend nearly enough, must not love your son at all, and are a cheapskate.

HTH

Seriously, awesome watch.  Glad it all worked out, and in the long run, the extra cashish won't be noticed, but that watch will always been looked upon fondly.

(Tell him don't be an idiot - take it off before going skiing)

had to do this with mine too. i don't like clasps with a watch for anything but metal bands.
