Wanting to shake up our league's scoring for D/ST's (1 Viewer)

Shrek

Having a great season
Note to board mods: I know this isn't strictly about current NFL news, but it isn't exactly a WDIS type thread either. If this doesn't belong in the SP, please move it.

Now on to my dilemma. I'm commissioner of a league that's been together for about 12 years. In that time, we've barely modified the way we score Defense/Special Teams. After rumblings from many of the league owners for the past few years, I've been asked to put together some ideas on how to change the way the D/ST's are scored. We don't want to go to IDP's as many of the league owners feel they don't want to spend the extra time and effort on that. They're just looking for some fresh new ideas on scoring. I'm willing to listen to any suggestions. We have a Rules Committee Meeting on NFL draft day next spring, so hopefully I can put together some ideas to present to them then.

At this time, here is how our league scores for D/ST's:

Defensive/ST Fumble Recovered - 2 points

Defensive and Special Teams TD - 6 points

Interceptions - 2 points

Kick and Punt Return Yards - 1 point for every 20 Yds

Sack - 2 points

Safety - 5 points

Points Allowed (PA):

2 - 6 PA = 8 points

7 - 13 PA = 6 points

14 - 20 PA = 4 points

21 - 27 PA = 2 points

28 - 34 PA = 1 point

35+ PAs = 0 points

Bonus for Defensive Shutout- 15 points

Yards Allowed:

0 - 49 YDSs = 12 points

50 - 99 YDSs = 10 points

100 - 149 YDSs = 8 points

150 - 199 YDSs = 6 points

200 - 249 YDSs = 4 points

250 - 299 YDSs = 2 points

300+ YDSs = 0 points

Looks like you've got the bases pretty well covered, as you're scoring in most of the common categories.

I don't see what's really missing there.

0 - 49 YDSs = 12 points

On your yardage scoring, a team would get o points for keeping their opponent to negative yardage on the game.

Sure, it's extremely unlikely. Doubt I'll see it in my lifetime.

But strange things can happen.

I'd list a 100 point score for negative yardage.

But, even if not wanting to go crazy (as I would), you might want to put something down. Maybe 20 points.

Not sure what you'd like to come up with, but one thing I do have in mind is this:

If you end up adding more scoring for your DST category, my may wish to rein in some of the other scoring.

Otherwise, DST could easily become a more important factor than you'd like it to be. I've been in (and seen) many leagues in which folks didn't test out DST scoring, and DSTs ended up routinely accounting for a third of all fantasy points. That's fine, if it's desired, but it's usually not desired.

Good Luck!

(Oh, and your thread is entirely appropriate for this forum.)

How about negative points for giving up too many yards and points? If you really wanted to shake things up, just go IDP

We changed our scoring up a little before this season and it seems to make the games a bit more interesting.

I did away with ranges for points allowed and yardage allowed and went with an "every yard counts" strategy. This came about because we count every yard produced on offense (.1 per rushing/receiving yard and .033 per passing yard), so why not try and translate that to the defensive side.

Our scoring for yards allowed is the defense starts with 5 points (zero yards allowed) and decreases by .013 points for each yard allowed. This brings you to zero at around 385 yards.

For points allowed (by the way, points allowed only count against the DST when they DST is actually on the field. An INT returned for a TD does not count against the DST), the defense again starts with 5 (for allowing zero points) then they lose .25 for each point allowed. This brings you to zero at 20 points.

Defenses can score negative points for allowing more than 385 yards and/or by allowing more than 20 points.

In addition, they earn .5 points for every third down stop and lose .5 points for every third down converted.

Fumbles, INTs and safeties are 2 points each. TDs are 6. Sacks are 1. Also, if a DST player loses a fumble (i.e. on a kick return or an INT) the DST loses 2 points.

For the record, top 5 DSTs were Baltimore (#40 overall), San Fran (#54 overall), Chicago (#68 overall), Houston (#73 overall) and Detroit (#77 overall).

Hope that helps!
