Warning RE: LaRon Landry (1 Viewer)

Kudos to Norton for pointing this out in his EOTG yesterday and another reason I'm cutting down every tree in my backyard to get a view of the southwestern sky next spring.

----------

From the Washington Times today...
For Landry, it meant returning to the role he played at Louisiana State — manning the deep middle of the field. Throughout the first half of this season, Landry was used in the box to play the run and as a blitzer.

....

During their first three games together, Landry and Doughty played Cover 2 the majority of the time, each responsible for half of the field.

But assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams mixed up his game plan significantly against Chicago, playing primarily man coverage until the final two possessions.

Doughty played 55 of the 77 snaps (not including penalties). In a sign of how he might be used in the future, he played coverage 23 times.

....

Landry played every snap against Chicago. On 63 plays, he played deep middle, including 46 snaps where he was the lone safety playing back.
Could be worth considering Doughty in a pinch, but the momentum Landry had been gaining over the past two months is likely gone. Here's hoping the Redskins can find a safety that can cover before 2008 or we're going to see the same thing happen to Landry that is plaguing Donte Whitner. :goodposting:

If you're looking for some steady tackle numbers from a safety, I agree, Doughty might be a good flier/fill in to end out the year. I could see him averaging 6-7 tackles with the possibility of a sack before season's end.

Landry's tackle numbers will certainly go down but I think some of his big play numbers will bump up (INTs, PDs, FFs). Taylor had 9 PDs, 5 INTs and a FF in 8 full games. Eventually, maybe as soon as next year, you could see Landry putting up similar numbers with at least 4-5 tackles each week. I think he's probably a good "buy low" in dynasty leagues this off season as his numbers take somewhat of a dip these last few games.

Agree. He dropped two INTs against Chicago. The 2nd he might have been able to return about 100 yards for a TD.One thing I noticed about him against Chicago was that he was hitting more. Obviously there was the personal foul, but there were a couple other plays where Landry came flying in and laid a hit on a couple guys.

:football: His play in the Chicago game really reminded me of a young Taylor, PF and all.At the moment, I don't think Landry will ever have the range and closing ability Taylor had (time may prove me wrong, though) but I think he can play the role Taylor had been playing this year and excel in it.

He did a pretty good Taylor impression last night. I agree, he's not the all-around phenomenal athlete that Taylor was (nobody else at that position is) but the guy is still a high 1st rounder with 4.3 speed and excellent football instincts and playmaking ability.

As a 'Skins fan I'm both infuriated that I can't watch him and Taylor play in tandem, and grateful at the dumb luck that caused my team to draft such a worthy replacement for Taylor.

For IDP purposes, I think you're looking at him roughly approximating Taylor's numbers, but with likely fewer INT's because I don't think his hands are as good as Taylors were, and Taylor also had better leaping ability on the deep passes to pick them off at their highest point. His tackle numbers will definitely take a hit though.

Doughty - 6-4, 1 PD (1 ST tackle)Landry - 1-2, 1 PD (1 ST tackle)Props to Norton and Jene. :)There is something that has been mentioned recently (I'll look up the link later) to keep an eye on. Since Landry has moved to FS and Doughty to SS, when opponents have gone 3 wide, instead of going to a nickel Gregg Williams has sometimes opted to put 3 CBs on the field with Landry stationed deep (regular 4-3 up front). That means Doughty may be off the field a good bit more than Landry. Leigh Torrence, Springs and Smoot combined for 15 total tackles and 6 PDs this past week.

Interesting. I can't say I noticed that. I still have it on TIVO and may look into it. I remember seeing Prioleau some, but he's a safety, not a CB.Doughty was near the LOS a lot and generally did a good job to be around the ball. He missed a couple tackles and Jacobs ran through his arms at least once, but somewhat impressive to put up 6-4 if he really was being pulled some in nickel.

It was actually written before this weekend's game, so I'm not sure how much it actually occurred this week. I, also, thought Doughty was on the field a good bit on Sunday. I wasn't paying real close attention to it, but I don't recall that the Giants used a whole lot of 3WR sets.

Landry still is adjusting after being shifted to Taylor's role as free safety, while Doughty has been used to blitz more in recent weeks but is sometimes not even on the field because Williams often has used a lineup of three cornerbacks and just one safety. Teams have been trying to spread the Redskins by putting three wide receivers and a tight end wide, then running out of those formations, and with his secondary depth compromised Williams is responding by keeping just four defensive backs on the field but going with his three best pass-coverage cornerbacks instead of two safeties.

Look out, Landry's got a quad injury and didn't practice today:

Safety Omar Stoutmire, re-signed Wednesday, could end up being active this week. There is some concern that starting free safety LaRon Landry was unable to run much at all today and missed practice with his quad injury. Veteran safety Pierson Prioleau is having a hamstring problem, which leaves only second-year man Reed Doughty, under-sized special teams ace Vernon Fox at Stoutmire as healthy safeties.

The Skins are hoping Landry and Prioleau can do more Friday - the last practice day of the week - and at least one of them might come down to the game day decision.

Landry will be immensely important this weekend with the Redskins very likely to play 8 men in the box to stop the run and leaving Landry deep to play centerfield in a Cover-3 scheme.

Phew

LaRon Landry was full-go in Friday's practice, improving his status for Sunday night's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Officially, Landry is listed as probable. He suffered a quad injury in last week's win over the New York Giants.

"It looks like he's okay," head coach Joe Gibbs said of Landry. "I think he looked good [at practice on Friday]."
