Basically, pick any multiplex on any of one hundred and fifty-six weekends, and you're pretty much guaranteed to have to choose between two or three awesome movies.
Playing at the multiplex, on this weekend in 1984: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Temple of Doom, Karate Kid, Star Trek 3, Police Academy, and The Natural.84-86 was an incredible run for Hollywood.

Yeah, I came in to say 1984 but it looks like many beat me to it. Ridiculously good year for movies.Playing at the multiplex, on this weekend in 1984: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Temple of Doom, Karate Kid, Star Trek 3, Police Academy, and The Natural.84-86 was an incredible run for Hollywood.

Heck of a marquee outside the theater that had that lineup.

Yeah I came in here to say 1994.....
I personally considered the whole 93-95 to be a small golden age of movies. You got the whole 94 catalog and then you add in
Schindler's List
Jurassic Park
The Fugitive
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Braveheart (I'm one of those guys who think its top 3)
The Usual Suspects
Apollo 13
Casino
Leaving Las Vegas
12 Monkeys
Seven
Crimson Tide
This is one Hell of a lineup for 3 years.
I cant think of 5 must see movies from the last 3 years.
1972 (Godfather, Deliverance, Jeremiah Johnson, Poseidon Adventure, The Getaway, Chinese Connection), 1984 and 1985 were 3 of my favorite years.84-86 was an incredible run for Hollywood.

That list is pretty awesome now.I think that the older we get, the less excited we are about movies no matter what the level of perceived quality. For example, this 1984 list was pretty awesome when I was 10 years old.
Beverly Hills Cop
Ghostbusters
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Gremlins
Karate Kid
Police Academy I
Footloose
Romancing the Stone

To my father, who grew up loving old westerns twenty years before this, this list is probably a pile of crap. There are probably a bunch of ten year olds out there just really discovering movies for the first time thinking that this summer is the best ever....Spiderman, X'Men, Transformers, Godzilla, then in a few years the kid will sneak watch Neighbors and 22 Jump Street and then declare this the best year ever for movies....its probably all relative.
Never said it was an all-time best, just would be nice to walk into a theater today and have that kind of choice at the box office.when providing evidence of how a year ranks as an all-time best, might want to leave off top secret and police academy.
You just lost your man card for mentioning those two movies. From Reddit
This last weekend 30 years ago you could have walked into the theater and had your choice of the following:
Ghostbusters
Gremlins
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The Karate Kid
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Top Secret!
The Natural
Police Academy
And you just missed out on Sixteen Candles and Footloose as their theatrical run just ended.
Pretty solid summer lineup.
