Watched "Office Space" for the first time last night... (1 Viewer)

The first hour of this movie is really good, but it really loses steam after that. Once they get done making fun of corporate america and inane bosses, it really has nowhere to go. Watching it to the end is actually a chore.

So, I'm assuming you're past the part about "Damn it feels good to be a gangster" part?

Yup... that's right about where it happens.

This is kinda cool:

Mike Judge sells HBO a new office comedy

For those who have longed to see Mike Judge return to the world of workplace comedies set inside technology companies, their very specific desires could soon be fulfilled by HBO. The network has just ordered to pilot Silicon Valley, a single-camera comedy from the Office Space director and his King Of The Hill collaborators John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky that's "set in the high tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success." For example, all the crap they buy from SkyMall, and also probably some stuff about their awkward relationships. Judge himself will direct the pilot this spring, after which the people mentioned in the first sentence can begin longing for other things. Maybe try "world peace," you selfish bastards.

Office Space was the guys version of "Kathy" or "Dilbert". It was for single guys, who worked in that environment during that era.......much like "Ally McBeal " was for women. It was a less serious and less pretentious version of Fight Club.

I hope they're able to differentiate this from "The Office" well enough. Big, big fan of "Office Space."You know jdoggydog, it looks like you've been missing a lot of work lately...

...and I don't understand the love for this movie...

Yeah it had maybe one or two good things, but the TPS reports was maybe only funny for the first 1/2 time that it was used...

I wish I had that 90 minutes back...
I think someone is jumping to conclusions

Oh they will. The Office is my most hated TV show ever. Office Space is in my top 5 comedies. Never watched KOTH much but I love everything else Judge has done. I don't think he'd ever do something as lame and flat as The Office.

King of the Hill wasn't bad. Not top notch, but not bad, with some very funny episodes/moments (Steven Root in particular is priceless as always). The British "The Office" is fantastic, the U.S. one I'm not a huge fan of. Either way I wonder how much new ground they can cover beyond the film and those two series. I'm hoping plenty as it's been a while since Judge has visited the subject.

Some movies just don't work for people if they waited too long to see the movie. When the movie first comes out its new, funny and groundbreaking. But after several years of people repeating the lines and other movies/shows ripping off things from the movie, and the original just doesn't seem new and fresh anymore.
Could be. I saw Something About Mary in the theater and everyone was hysterical. Now, without the shock value and the crowd it doesn't make me want to watch it again.

Office Space was the guys version of "Kathy" or "Dilbert". It was for single guys, who worked in that environment during that era.......much like "Ally McBeal " was for women. It was a less serious and less pretentious version of Fight Club.
Aside from thrm both being movies, Fight Club and Office Space literally have absolutely nothing in common. There is no comparison to be made whatsoever.

I own it, still watch it every time it's on TV and still think it's hilarious. I do work in an office so maybe that has some influence.

Sorry, I didn't mean that to come off so dickish. Let me try again. There's a really obvious parallel between the main themes of each movie. Pretty heavy-handed actually.

The British version is my favorite - although Gervais always knows when to stop. I do like the American version pre-Jim and Pam getting together.

I don't know why Fight Club is seen as pretentious.

I was about the biggest fan of Fight Club there was.....but now it just doesnt resonate. Im sure its because Im in a different frame of life right now (although I dont remember if it were Andy Dufrense or Ivan.....but at one time they wrote a critque that the movie lost relevance in a post 9/11 world that I thought was interesting) ...... but it just feels a little more smug and self indulgent.

Sure they do. Its the whole "whats the role for and what satisfaction can the modern man get out of todays society " angle. Thats why Lawerence is there and why Peter is seen enjoying common (and in his mind relevant) labor at the end.

I don't know that it's pretentious, but I always felt it (the movie) was a bit hypocritical and its fanbois engage in some serious unintended self irony.

I connect with Fight Club because it condemns the worship of materialism. I don't ever see materialism going away, so I think FC will always be relevant.

I didn't think it was just materialism....but the idea that materialism replaces a void in men where something else once existed. Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. ### #### it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy #### we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

When the movie came out, I thought there was some truth to that (be it the age or personal state I was in when it came out); the idea that we, as a collective male society, were adrift. As I got older though, the reckless lashing out seemed smaller and more petty; partially because we're never forced to engage in the materialism that Fight Club pushed back against,.....but mainly because the past decade has given the motivated "Fight Clubber" ample opportunities to engage in a spiritual war for the soul of "man". There were wars. There are Depressions in which one can prove their potential, purpose and place.

Specifically speaking of the materialism...one can still be outside the circus of materialism in this world. Sure, a person spit out of that system can lament the idea that other people are still in it (and I guess in Fight Club, that was done by the random acts of mayhem that forced those still in the system to acknowledge the silliness of the system) but personally speaking, I now got a wife and two kids and don't have time to take a #### much less worry about what other people are enjoying.....no matter how trivial I think it is.

Well said. I think there are people who participate gleefully in the excess of materialism (watch the Black Friday YouTube carnage), and there are people that see the true pursuit of happiness as being empty when you desire possessions and money. It's not that Fight Club is some gleaming diamond of societal commentary without flaws. But it does espouse a philosophy in a way that's compelling to me.

Actually, I love my job :bag:

Way back when I downloaded an "Office Space" soundboard at work. Great way to fill the time around the 10 minutes of meaningful work we managed to do in a typical day.

Gary Cole is a frigging national treasure, btw.
