Yes, yes, and possiblyDidn't the Dolphins already acquire Watson from the Saints in a trade about a month ago? Or did it fall through? Or am I completely out of it?
they certainly could use himDoes this lend credence to the idea that the Saints may be interested in Donnie Edwards?
I think some type of Edwards for Smith deal makes a lot of sense. Both players are reportedly being shopped. Smith could contribute as a safety/nickel back in San Diego. Edwards would instantly become the best LB on the Saints roster. Seems a little unbalanced and I'd think the Chargers could ask for a little bit more depending on how badly they want to move him.Donnie Edwards and Hanik Milligan for Dwight Smith? That's what the local sports radio station here was speculating (Billy Ray Smith on the Mighty 1090), which decreases its chances of happening since they never get anything right.
I don't think the Watson deal makes it any more likely that the Saints get Donnie Edwards. He has been on his way out for months. That's not to say that these rumors don't have legs though.I don't know what the Chargers want with Smith. They signed Marlon McCree, a pretty similar player to Smith, in the offseason to play free safety. Smith isn't a good fit at SS, and the Chargers already have Bwahoh Jue, Clinton Hart, and Terrence Kiel on the roster. Maybe Jue's offseason microfracture procedure for a knee injury is more serious than they're letting on.I think some type of Edwards for Smith deal makes a lot of sense. I would think they'd play McCree at SS and Smith at FS.Right now, assuming McCree is the answer at one safety spot, there's still a hole at the other one. Jue is a passable starter if he's healthy; but I think McCree and Smith would be an upgrade over Jue and McCree. If Jue isn't healthy, that leaves Kiel and Hart, either of whom would probably be viewed as a weak link in the secondary (along with whoever starts at CB across from Jammer), at least until they prove otherwise.I don't know what the Chargers want with Smith. Then they better hope that Stephen Cooper (or Tim Dobbins) is the real deal in run support and that Randall Godfrey has another solid year left in him as McCree is much better in coverage than in the box providing run support. Why are the Chargers so disappointed in Kiel? He looked like a solid prospect in 2004, then was dinged off and on for a good part of 2005. He's not the greatest cover man, but has some skill and totaled 16 passes defended and two interceptions over his two seasons as a starter on strong side. And they look to have minimized the need for both safeties to be premier cover guys with the addition of Cromartie.I would think they'd play McCree at SS and Smith at FS.Right now, assuming McCree is the answer at one safety spot, there's still a hole at the other one. Cool. Thanks MT.Kiel looked to be fine in coverage to me in 2004; I had attributed many of his issues to a possible loss of range/leverage caused by the ankle injury he suffered in Week 6. He tried to play through the injury for two months before finally having surgery when the Chargers were eliminated from playoff contention. The stats from his game log seemed to support this, so I appreciate your eyes-on insight.Kiel is a bit of an enigma. Early in his career he looked like he was going to grow into a solid player. But based on last year, he can't cover. He's generally solid in run support, although he uncharacteristically missed several tackles last year as well.
Overall, I don't think anyone is giving up on him. He's shown enough promise to keep people's hopes up.
But I also don't think anyone wants to go into the season relying on him as a starter. Unless he shows tremendous improvement over last year, he is a weak link in the secondary. Four years ago, there were weak links all over the place; but now I see only two starting positions on defense that may be weaknesses. One safety and one corner. There are some young players with potential at both spots (including Kiel), but no sure things. So those are the positions that will draw attention throughout the rest of the offseason. Hence the rumors regarding Dwight Smith and Ty Law. Maybe nothing will come of either rumor (especially Ty Law since AJ Smith isn't one to over-spend), but it's easy to understand why the rumors would focus on those two positions.
