Weathers or Torres? (1 Viewer)

NL only 4x4. Who would you rather have for the rest of the year?
Hmmm....Torres.I think Torres is the better pitcher, and I think he has slightly more job security. He does have Capps waiting in the wings, and the Reds don't have anyone obvious waiting to take over. But Weathers is only closer by default, whereas the Pirates purposely traded their closer to hand the reigns over to Torres. I think the Reds situation has a better chance of going to committee within the next month or two.

that's a really interesting take on things. there's no way in hell the pirates traded gonzalez to hand the reigns over to torres. they saw in september last year that they had someone who could do the job. so they got a great return on gonzalez. if anything, they traded gonzalez because of what they saw in capps last year. he is the future closer. his skills are ridiculously better than torres'.

I concur. I am not sure when Capps is taking over, but Torres is not the answer long term. Right now it looks like Capps is just biding time in the setup role until they hand him the job.

Meanwhile, Weathers is the default closer in Cincinatti but I don't trust him any more than I trust Torres holds the job in Pittsburgh. Short term I'd take Torres with the knowledge I would eventually have to roster Capps.

I'd rather have Torres. Both are big ?'s though. Both could be traded. I could see the Pirates riding him till the trading deadline and maybe for the season. Then move to Capps next year. I'm not as confident in the Reds riding Weathers all season.

And yet, it's what they did. I should have phrased it better. The Pirates traded their closer AND handed the reigns over to Torres (as opposed to "traded their closer TO hand the reigns over to Torres"). I think they clearly saw Torres as a bridge from Gonzalez to Capps. The question is how long would that bridge be? A couple of months? A year? Till Torres is no longer palatable?I agree with you that Capps is the better talent by a wide margin. Broxton is also a better talent than Saito, but that doesn't help you with saves.
