Week 1: I'm benching Ray Rice for... (1 Viewer)

Agreed. The Steelers are why I passed on Rice in the draft. Others: No need to beat someone up for sitting a player for viable alternatives.
You passed on Rice because he plays two tough divisional games? You realize the Ravens have the softest schedule in the NFL right?

That was the tie-breaker.

this makes no sense, and in their 2 games in 2009 Rice put up 310 total yds with 6 catches...

Starting Rice this week. Hoping that the addition of Lee Evans will open up the passing game enough that the dumpoffs to Rice are effective.

who did you pass up Rice for and what scoring format?

Starting him no matter what. First, he is a good reciever and could end up having good receiving yards even if they contain his rushing. Second, he is a homerun threat and all it takes is one big play to make a successful fantasy game. Third, he is the goaline back this year and will have more opportunities for a cheap td.

What do people think about Shonn Greene vs. Ray Rice this week in non PPR?

Saying you'll bench Rice is never a good idea. Saying you'll bench him for some of those guys is flat out foolish. It very well may work for you, but I would prefer to not overthink things and play it safe.

It's not like we're talking about, say Michael Turner, who relies solely on his running to accumulate his yards and td's. Rice can catch and Flacco loves to dump it off to him. Against Pitt, Flacco will be under alot of pressure and will be checking down often to Rice. I don't know if Rice will have a good game but I'm not to worried considering Rice has two ways to produce.

Historically against the Steelers, that hasn't mattered. Typically, all RB's have struggled regardless. Though, I'll agree - Rice is a home run threat and could make benching him look silly on any given play.

No way that you can sit him in a PPR league. I would guess 18/60, 5/35 and about 60% chance at a TD. That's about 17-18 points in a PPR.

In a non PPR and you have options with much better matchups, then I can see sitting him. This is the toughest matchup for Rice by a mile.

Benching your #1 pick just shows how some ppl are noobs to fantasy football. You drafted Rice #1 so you don't have any type of debate on who to start in that position.

Do us a favor and before you hit the "post" button, use what brain cells you have left and think first.

Mods delete this threat before others get infected by his stupidly.

Debated this a bit this week. I agree that he was my 1st pick and I dont want to sit him. I have Jacobs and Tolbert figured as my flex plays every week. I prefer to use a RB as my flex and drafted with that in mind. I am starting Jacobs and Bradshaw this week because I think both will score big against Washington. So it's basically between Tolbert and Rice. I am not yet comfortable with Amendola or any of my other WR's besides vjax and harvin. So I will rool with rice because this year he wont lose carries at the goal line to mcgahee. It's probably a lock that Tolbert will at least get a goal line TD but I am thinking that Rice makes a statement with this first game....or hope at least :football:

I think you should have thought first before you hit the "post" button.

No way I bench my top 5 pick regardless of match up. The only time a 1st round pick should be on your bench is during his bye week. I think this is classic over thinking.

Starting him with confidence as one of my top 3 RBs.

Could have started Ingram over him, but did not think he would do well out of the gate (and he didn't...)

Will be happy to roll with Rice, McFadden, and Beanie Wells week 1.

The problem with benching him is, unless you have a bonified starter as your number 3 RB (or 4 depending on your league), you don't know how the touches will be distributed for a RB on a team with a RBBC. In other words, you don't know if that backup or 3rd down back will be used. I mean, I have Darren Sproles in two leagues where I have Rice, and had I known he was gonna touch the ball that much last night, I would have started him, but can you really take a chance on benching a stud like Rice and putting in a guy like Sproles (see: another player whose touches vary from week to week) who might end up getting like four touches? That is the danger.

From NFL.com:Just keep in mind that he was absolutely dreadful against the Steelers in 2010. In his two starts, he averaged a terrible 26 rushing yards. Rice also rushed for just 32 yards against them in the postseason. I thought it was dumb to sit a stud but this should be considered.
Is this 2010?
Since 2011 hasn't started yet, what else do you have to use to make your decision? How about this? Who is on everyone's bench for those that are starting Rice. It's easy to say never bench your stud if you don't have any alternatives.
Why not you use 2009 when Rice torched Pitt in both games? Also, after their last three Super Bowl appearances the Steelers have failed to qualify for the playoffs the following season. That fact is not relevant to this season but it sure sounds like it is, doesn't it?I don't think people really have options in week 1 because we have no idea how anyone will perform this year. You took this guy in the first round for a reason don't put him in the garage based on what is essentially a hunch. You will feel much worse if Rice performs well on your bench then if a bench player performs well on your bench.

Really??? If you can't think of your own opinion, plz refrain from copying mine.

I don't even consider the defense they are playing against when choosing my starters the first couple weeks.

Unstoppable units have crumbled after an offseason many times before.

Sitting a first rounder week 1 without injury concerns is bonkers. What was the point of drafting that player if that is all the confidence you have in him?

Cant wait to bump this after the game. Rice all the way! Id be more worried if ricky was vulturing but rice us the gl back. Should catch some passes and always has a chance to break something off

Who's is making threats?

I would not bench Rice. Pittsburgh had a great run D last year, but the year before Rice ran very well against Pitt. Last year Rice was not quite himself all year. He is 100% healthy right now. And Pitt has to guard against Lee Evans and the deep pass so they won't be able to stuff the box to stop Rice.

He won't have his best game of the year, but he will be a top 20 fantasy HB this week.

It's all about match ups..if you have better options, you do it.

Austin is on stud lists as well..everyone starting him against the jets as well?..I doubt it.

the point in drafting him is the high fantasy points you get for the majority of the weeks..Against bad match ups, you start someone else if youfeel they will do better. I used to follow the herd with "always start your studs". but have found I can do better...Of course, if you have a crappy bench, you don't have a choice.

I don't think Lee Evans is a defense changer for Pittsburgh. I have modest expectations for Rice this week but he simply has too much talent to bench.

I see the comparisons of the match up between Rice and the Pitt D from 2009 and 2010. He did well in 2009 and not so much in 2010. Does Troy Polamalu factor into the difference? I know he was injured in 2009 but I don't know if he was out for both games against Baltimore. IIRC in 2009 the Steeler D was considerably different (worse) w/o Troy in the lineup.

The same guys that are saying NBYS and trying to make it sound like its the no brainer of the year will also be the first guys posting on here at 1:36pm est on Sunday "Is rice Playing?????" and "Rice: WTF!!"

No rule is ever set in stone. That is the strategy of a game like FF. And if you disagree, I refer you to another rule: Never say never, exhibited by the evidence that guys like Turner and Rice and Aj and Wayne and Roddy all DO tend to have bad games against the Steelers and Ravens and Revis and Asomgha, etc.

No player is bench proof and its the lazy way out to not examine all your matchups and then simply say "but it was Rice. What was I supposed to do?" You were supposed to start Beanie Wells against the panthers..that's what you were suposed to do."

I have won (and lost) some of my biggest FF games thanks to me or the other guy relying on the NBYS theory. I've learned my lesson and I'm passing it on to you.

no. keeping him in there. I didn't use a top5 pick in my draft to put him on the bench wk1.

~60 rush/~20rec, and maybe a GL touch is my low-end expectation.

I'm confident enough in the rest of my team to risk only getting 8pts from Rice.

(slight hijack - I am sitting F.Jones for Hightower :boxing: )

I am seriously considering benching Rice to play Dwill and SJax at RB with Welker and Britt my WR2 and Flex. I probably won't do it....Welker will probably sit....but I am really considering it.

Win in vegas much?? Classic faulty logic. You drafted him #5 because you expect him to have a great year; not a great week. Its really no different than if he was hurt or on a bye one week; you adjust and play him when you should/can.

Noobs? I'm benching Mendehall in one league for hightower ....I've been playing since before computers and consistantly make playoffs and money. You need to play matchups somtimes, if you have a good matchup. Thats the beauty of FF..ur the GM.

Not expecting a tonne of rushing yards, <70 yards probably. Through the air is how I think he'll do his damage this week tho. I could see another 60ish yards thru the air. Add in a rushing TD and I'll be all smiles.

I'm starting MJD and Wells (over Rice) due to Rice's showing the past 3 games vs. Pitt and Wells opportunity as the primary ball carrier vs a sorry Carolina team that may be w/o Beason. I'm expecting that AZ will be up and will run to preserve the win.Sure NBYS is a nice mantra but sometimes you have to go against the grain to be top dog.Disclosure for perspective: I'm in a 14 team 4 man keeper non-ppr league, start 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE and no flex. We play a double header this week since playoffs are weeks 14-16. I'm also starting Stafford, Roddy, Megatron and Jimmy Graham. Drafted Wells in first round... and I know that no one cares about my team.
This logic is baffling. Even if you count the last 3 games (including the one where he was injured) he has still done more than Beanie has ever in the NFL...
The BW lovefest will be over soon enough and needs to endI have RR and there is no way I'm starting my backup Felix Jones over him this week matchup or not

quite the contrary..the noobs will play Rice no matter what...the more experienced can see that maybe a lesser back or WR(or QB in flex league) with a much better match up is the way to go. Sounds like the start no matter what crowd here have some pretty crappy benches. sorry you didn't draft better..lol

Rice is starting for me in favor of Blount and Reggie. I will say though, that while I'm a Beanie hater, I'd start him vs Carolina over Rice.

Ravens OC Cam Cameron announced in camp that Ray Rice will be his goal-line back this year, and that's going to make Rice difficult to bench even in tough matchups like this. Rice will touch the ball 20 times and probably gain between 70 and 90 total yards Sunday. With Willis McGahee vulturing all short-yardage scores last year, I recommended to sit Rice twice against the Steelers. Admittedly hampered by a season-long knee injury, Rice didn't top 50 yards or find the end zone in either game. Owners need to start Rice this week. His scoring potential has increased sizably, Rice's explosiveness has returned (preseason 4.92 YPC) along with his health, and the Ravens' run blocking is much better off with Michael Oher at right tackle and Marshal Yanda at right guard. :football:

Thx for the heads up Busted. I like to add, Rice has Foster's FB now and Leach helps Rice even more.

Why draft a guy in the 1st round only to question should he play him or bench him??? I guess you would of benched Brady last year when he played CHI in Chicago in a snow storm?? If you did, can I play in your league. Stats were 27/40 369 yds 9.2 ave 2 TDs 0 int 113.4 passer rating.

I'm starting Beanie over him. I am debating Ray Rice or Ced Benson for RB #2, then I need to consider one of those RBs or TB Mike Williams for my flex.
