Wes Welker likes his “foot” metaphors

LInk to Deadspin Video >

Just when you think the chatter between the Patriots and Jets couldn’t get any sillier, Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker stepped to the podium Thursday as if dared to see how many “foot” references he could cram in to a single media session. Behold:

1. On this week of preparation: “Everybody’s putting their best foot forward.”

2. On young players in the playoffs: “You can’t just stick your toe in the water. You gotta jump right in.”

3. On playing this year as opposed to last year: “It’s definitely different. You know, you’ve got your foot up in the air trying to get the swelling to go down. Definitely excited about the opportunity to get out there and have some fun.”

4. On the opportunity this week: “These are the games you play for. What you spend all year getting ready for and you just want to put your best foot forward.”

5. On Revis: “He’s got great feet.”

6. On Revis again: “He’s very patient, has good feet.”

7. On Deion Branch: “He runs some really good routes out there . . . He’s another guy with great feet and can really move around.”

8. On practice: “You want to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward out there and making it happen.”

9. More on practice: “Us going out there and being good little foot soliders and making sure we’re going out there and doing everything coach asks us to do.”

10. On seeing new things in the playoffs: “You definitely have to be on your toes and make sure you’re ready to go.”

Genius. Since this is clearly the most important post I’ll ever write at PFT, let’s analyze further.

Welker is deadpan as ever with his delivery, so there’s no way he can really be called out for it. A few clues indicate that it’s not just a coincidence. Jackie MacMullan of ESPNBoston.com wrote a great feature on Welker. Part of it is about what a huge prankster he is.

“Put Wes, Matt [Cassel] and Larry Izzo in a room, and they are ‘The Three Stooges,’” Tom Brady said.

Welker got his first “foot” reference in on his first question and rarely let up in his ten minutes of talking. He also appears to be stifling a smile and/or laugh after his two most ridiculous references — No. 2 and No. 9.

Maybe it’s all a coincidence, but we really doubt it. And that would be no fun. We’ll continue to update you on this vitally important breaking story here at PFT.

Foot references are not the only "dropped stat" Wes leads the league in.
Interesting that he's also tied for 6th in Receptions.. wonder if any of this has to do with a high number of targets  He's also averaging twice as many YAC as Brandon Marshall (who is nipping at Welker's heels for the dropped pass title).... of course this is after not missing a single game after a knee reconstruction. What's Marshall's excuse? :confused:We get it... Miami fans are still bitter about failing to identify what they had in Welker.

Drops Per Target:Welker: 10.6%

Devin Hester: 9.6%

Jerrich Cotchery: 9.3%

Brandon Gibson: 8.8%

Miles Austin: 8.4%

Donald Driver: 8.1%

Steve Smith: 8.1%

Steve Breaston: 8.1%

Terrell Owens: 7.9%

Pierre Garcon: 7.6%

Brandon Marshall: 7.5%

Drops Per Missed Catch*: (*or "Drops Per Non Catch" or whatever you want to call it)

Welker: 13/37 (35%)

Devin Hester: 7/27 (26%)

Danny Amendola: 8/38 (21%)

Brandon Gibson: 8/38 (21%)

Miles Austin: 10/50 (20%)

Donald Driver: 7/35 (20%)

Reggie Wayne: 12/65 (18.5%)

Brandon Marshall: 11/60 (18.3%)

Jerricho Cotchery: 8/45 (17.8%)

Pierre Garcon: 9/51 (17.7%)

Welker may have a lot of targets and a lot of catches, but he also has a LOT of misses that were dropped.

More motivation for the Jets.

I bet Rex stops Welker from sniffing the endzone.

I sincerely hope they adjust their gameplan from "best way to stop the patriots to reach the endzone" to "best way to stop welker from reaching the endzone". :pleasebabyjeebus:

Drops Per Missed Catch:
Can someone explian to me what the heck a "dropped per missed catch" is - I thought a drop WAS a missed catch.
I used the phrase "missed catch" to describe targeted passes that wasn't caught (even the ones that weren't Welker's fault). Welker was targeted 123 times and had 86 catches; therefore, 37 misses.Of those 37 missed catches (or "non catches" or whatever you want to call them), 13 were considered to be "Drops" by STATS, LLC.

Therefore, Welker dropped 35% of his misses -- highest in the league.

So what... he's still a beast... SAY IT AINT SO!!!!

You cant... because he is. Dude ####### blows out his ACL in the last reg season game then comes back the next season and doesnt miss a GAME... WHAT!? Are you kidding me.

White Wes Welker... making #### happen out there. Recognize homie.

Comedy GOLD! This guy is genius. And to all those hating on Welker, really?
I was just joking around like my buddy Wes when I made my dropped passes quip above. I've always liked Welker. It is Cam Cameron who I hate for trading the guy away.

:penalty: Gotta figure this was intentional. The repeated "good feet" remarks should be a dead giveaway. Admittedly, I haven't heard all of Welker's comments from other press conferences, but I can't recall him talking much about other players' footwork before. Don't find it particularly offensive, really. Just funny.

Wouldn't be surprised to hear that other Pats players were counting foot mentions in the back.

Remember that thing Randy Moss used to do with his arms when he's score? Like he was ripping something open (most people thought he was "splitting the defense" or something like that)? That was a private joke between him and Welker. Think extremely vulgar, and I'm sure you can figure it out.

I think this is another good sign for the Jets. How often to the Pats get into trash talking the week before the game?

The only one I can think of is when Brady commented on Plaxico's score prediction in the super bowl... "We're only going to score 17 points? Ok."

Signed,

A wishful thinking Jets fan

Its a fair point, and interesting that welker "broke camp" w/ BB and talked shizzle.Having said that, Rex will probably enjoy a lot of Wes planting one of his powerful feet in the turf, pressing off on a golden arch, and tiptoe'ing through the secondary. A touchdown celebration with some fancy footwork is in order here...

If I was a 5'10 slot wr I dont think I would be talking too much trash. The opportunity for you to get cheap shot put on you is too great.

I would by lying if I said it didn't amuse me. But, I do wonder what Bill B thought of it and if Welker was breaking with protocol. Either way, if you're going to talk smack, to me the way Welker did it was clever, understated and thoughtful versus Cromartie's false bravado.
