Well Jayrod, you might want to read this before getting a dog (1 Viewer)

My 13 year 5 month old lab/golden has been throwing up. It started Sunday night. She threw up Tuesday when my wife checked on her at lunch and at night too. She was on a new med we started Sunday and thought it might be that. Took her off the med and started her on chicken and rice Wednesday. She ate her chicken and rice about 6pm and all as fine. Let her out at 9 and then fed her more. This morning wife tried to feed her again and she had no interest in food. This is a big deal. She never turns down chicken and rice or eggs. She let me know and headed to work. When my wife was pulling out the driveway for work and noticed piles of chicken and rice in the yard. Yes, she threw that up too.

Took her to the vet at 8:45 this morning. She seemed happy but we were worried about her dehydrating with nothing staying down. I was just at the vet a week ago for a different major issue. The vet did a quick exam of her and handed me an estimate for 500.00 for blood work and xrays etc. I asked the vet if it all was necessary because it seems like they are always selling me there. I asked what happens if all the tests come back negative(which I knew they would) and it was just a virus. She expressed her concerns of just giving her meds when she can't hold anything down and I gave the go ahead and left her there to do the tests.

I get a call around 11 from the vet telling my the blood came back good and everything looks good on the xray but the spleen looks "folded over" and she can't really tell the problem without an ultra sound that costs 336.00. Okay go ahead.

Get a call at 1pm there is a large mass on the spleen that could burst at anytime and she needs surgery. It will cost a lot, we got Credit Care etc....Well doc, give me the high estimate. 3200.00.(this includes a 500 charge for her getting 24 hour care tonight) Okay doc, do what needs to been done .

Surgery is done, won't get to see my dog until tomorrow and probably won't come home until Sunday.

Oh, BTW she thinks the tumor was cancer and she only has 6-12 months to live.

Guess what.........I would pay 10K for 6 more months.

You sure you can love a dog this much? If not, think about getting one. I feel bad for someone in my situation that does not have the means do what I am doing. And there was no consideration to putting her down, she is sick not dead. Or no consideration for just letting her go on without the surgery when it could burst and her bleed out and have a painful death.

I didn't proof this sorry, it is still raw.

I'm sorry to hear this. :( I too hope Jayrod follows many peoples advice and decides not to purchase a dog.

I'm not sure if putting down a dead dog is the right way to do it.
Sorry, sick not on her death bed........hope this helps.
But it could be her death bed if she lays on it 6 months so..........how about not dying in the next 6 months.........Is that better? Man you have insight, sorry for the mistake.

So if you aren't willing to blow all your savings on extending the life of an older animal then you shouldn't own a pet?!!????!

Very sorry to hear FUJB. Its heart-wrenching to go through. One of my wife's friends is going through something similar - vet bills mounting, emergency surgeries, bunch of meds (including injections) and their dog's only about 4 years old.

Do what you can and good luck to your dog and your family.

Well the only thing I can tell you if you run into trouble with a dog that young is.........do what you can. If they can come out on the other side with a reasonable time left and you have the means, take care of it.

Mine had two ACL replacements by the age 5. (two weeks before each replacement I won/finished top 3 in 100 tournys on PStars.......no bs, playing for her)

I drive a 2003 Altima, if I didn't have my dog I could have a nice Mercedes. But like most of us I didn't know it getting in to owning a dog for life. And wouldn't change it for anything. Just can't wait til I get her home and love her for the time she has left.

 Then why the jab at me? If you were ignorant, didn't know what you were getting into, why am I being so villified for not knowing what i was getting into? I have admitted my error and have changed my mind but people are still constantly taking jabs at me. Why?

I answered you above.

I hope the best for you and your family.

I truly hope you get at least six more months.
thanks, I appreciate this. I made this to you because you have those other threads..........and I want you too see what can happen.
OK, I think I see now. I thought you were lashing out at me like the two clowns in this thread.
You are an accountant right?

Either way I thought you have helped out people on this board before and I didn't lash out at you at first. I just said that labs and goldens need affection to leave me outside would be cruel.

My dog is almost 15, I think this is his last year.

Sucks balls.

Sorry Cav, hope your girl exceeds expected life and gives you a couple more good years.

Well on with the story.......if the day was not bad enough, I left this little tidbit out. Now dog has not eaten anything solid since Tuesday. When I get home from work today and Sahara is under the knife we find a 1/2" of her tooth on the floor in the bedroom. Then I get a call of the 24 hour care vet at about 9pm tonight saying she is doing well. Up and wagging her tail. And am I going to pick her up tomorrow. I was WTF, her vet said she has to be there too Sunday......she said she thinks vet is heading out of town and we can pick her up tomorrow. Anyway wife is going to get a call at 7:30 am. to figure it out.

Before this we knew the end was near, just hoping it didn't take a medical turn, because at this age the don't recover well. Love your boy, that is all you can do in the end!(which I can tell you already know)

Enjoy your time with Sahara FUJB. Tough times for you. We have one older dog and one about five years old and I try to appreciate the older one as much as possible and I remind my family to do the same. Best dog ever.

Hope all goes well and she is comfortable and happy. We had to finally put our 14 year old lab down after he started to suffer. He had cancer and couldn't even muster a bark. Tough times indeed.

If the vet told jayrod that his dog had a mild cold he would tell the vet to put it down. Even after the vet would try to explain that its only a cold and a OTC med would take care of it. He would still have it put down. Please don't get a dog jayrod.

That sucks man. Same happened with our 9.5 year old black lab. We spent over 10K, he made it one more month. I cried like a baby when the time came, I felt helpless and wanted to do more for him. Hardest part of owning a dog.

I don't mean this in a heartless way, but the good news is you can get another dog. It takes some time, but we got a Vizsla a few months after the black lab passed and that brought us a lot of joy again.

OK, now I'm convinced.

On .6 acres they're probably too busy frolicking through the forest and swimming in lakes for Jayrod to notice his dog even has a cold.

So is this a thing now? Any pet thread we have to bring Jayrod into it and make 0.6 acres and "bet you'd kill the dog in this scenario" jokes?

Sorry you are going through this Cav :(
