My 13 year 5 month old lab/golden has been throwing up. It started Sunday night. She threw up Tuesday when my wife checked on her at lunch and at night too. She was on a new med we started Sunday and thought it might be that. Took her off the med and started her on chicken and rice Wednesday. She ate her chicken and rice about 6pm and all as fine. Let her out at 9 and then fed her more. This morning wife tried to feed her again and she had no interest in food. This is a big deal. She never turns down chicken and rice or eggs. She let me know and headed to work. When my wife was pulling out the driveway for work and noticed piles of chicken and rice in the yard. Yes, she threw that up too.
Took her to the vet at 8:45 this morning. She seemed happy but we were worried about her dehydrating with nothing staying down. I was just at the vet a week ago for a different major issue. The vet did a quick exam of her and handed me an estimate for 500.00 for blood work and xrays etc. I asked the vet if it all was necessary because it seems like they are always selling me there. I asked what happens if all the tests come back negative(which I knew they would) and it was just a virus. She expressed her concerns of just giving her meds when she can't hold anything down and I gave the go ahead and left her there to do the tests.
I get a call around 11 from the vet telling my the blood came back good and everything looks good on the xray but the spleen looks "folded over" and she can't really tell the problem without an ultra sound that costs 336.00. Okay go ahead.
Get a call at 1pm there is a large mass on the spleen that could burst at anytime and she needs surgery. It will cost a lot, we got Credit Care etc....Well doc, give me the high estimate. 3200.00.(this includes a 500 charge for her getting 24 hour care tonight) Okay doc, do what needs to been done .
Surgery is done, won't get to see my dog until tomorrow and probably won't come home until Sunday.
Oh, BTW she thinks the tumor was cancer and she only has 6-12 months to live.
Guess what.........I would pay 10K for 6 more months.
You sure you can love a dog this much? If not, think about getting one. I feel bad for someone in my situation that does not have the means do what I am doing. And there was no consideration to putting her down, she is sick not dead. Or no consideration for just letting her go on without the surgery when it could burst and her bleed out and have a painful death.
I didn't proof this sorry, it is still raw.
