Wes Welker (1 Viewer)

I drafted Welker in the 13th round of my PPR league. He's now my WR3. Over the first 3 games of the season he's averaged 16 points per week -- which makes him WR #21 in our league. What I love about Welker is that he's consistent. He consistently racks up at least 6 receptions per game for ~60 yards (with TD/big games potential). This consistency makes him even more valuable than his 21st position suggests.

But, will he keep it up? It seems like the Pats are playing with an F-you attitude to the rest of the league and everyone there is performing at peak.

I can't decide if Welker is at his peak and I should pull the trigger on a trade (for a solid RB2) and run, or if he'll be this good the rest of the way...

Thoughts?

IMHO he represents a sell high candidate right now. My impression is that he is a bit over-valued right now. Having him as your WR3 isn't bad. However, I think there are people out there that may consider him a WR2 and may be willing to pay that while Brady and the boys are on a roll. As the season goes on, the Pats will start to involve Stallworth a bit more and also start to lean more on the running game. Both of which will impact Welker. I am by no means down on Welker. I absolutley love the guy, however from a fantasy persperctive I think he is slightly over-valued right now.

Good post. I also see it developing in that direction... however i do have him in a couple ppr leagues and would not hesitate to start him every Sunday. As long as he stays healthy he's like the new Troy Brown and could catch 6-8 balls a game! But that may be 60-80 yards. 1st down! I didn't know anything about Welker before this year and it goes to show that if someone has really good hands they can be a difference maker. Having said that I don't think I've ever seen a qb drill people in the #'s like Brady is doing right now (ok, except for Manning). It's harder to drop the balls he's throwing than catch it.

I agree. In a PPR league, he will be gold all year long.

not saying the above necessarily wrong, but couldn't teams begin to roll even more coverage randy's way if he continues with the gawdy production...creating even more opportunity for welker underneath?

just another perspective...the one above and this view are what i'm torn between.

I think people are really using this "sell high/buy low" thing too much this year.

We're only 3 weeks into the season and he's putting up decent to good numbers. NE paid a high price to sign the guy, why would you think they aren't going to utilize his skills for the rest of the season and beyond?

For what it's worth, I offered Welker for a late 2008 1st round rookie pick. The trade will happen in the next few minutes.

No doubt, he could have 10+ catch games, maybe even a Curtis like breakout. BUT, this is the Patriots and they will try to establish a running game when the situation dictates, could be a certain opponent, could be the weather. And, as was said, Stallworth will be involved, Maroney, Morris, and Faulk... Watson, Moss, Stallworth, maybe some Kyke Brady, Gaffney....

Yes, I'm a fan but I do believe the Pats look at the whole scope of a season as well as minute details. Their plan this year was to establish the pass in the early season, that will open up the run later on. I may be crazy but I think they're that smart. They also make half time adjustments better than any team in the league, IMO. That's why that second half against the Colts was so devastating- props to Manning.

He plays Cinci this week. Everyone scores on Cinci through the air. His trade value may never be higher then after that game.

I think they want Brady to take Manning's TD record so there is no doubt about who the best QB of this era is. They sure haven't taken their foot off the gas pedal when they've been up in games so far.

:( I keep the guy and use him... nothing wrong with consistent production. If I were stacked at WR and he were wasting on my bench... there is nothing wrong with taking a few offers...

Through the air, on the ground, underwater, it doesn't really matter.....you can score on Cinci right now just about any way you want.

Just traded Welker for MJD. Some look at this as a no brainer but it was tough to let Welker go for this. Welker was my WR4 though behind (Smith, Wayne and Braylon, with Burleson/Roddy on the bech). It was a gamble I was willing to take knowing that MJD could win me the league down the road. Who knows.......buy low on MJD and sell high on Welker......OR was it the other nway around and Welker could have won me a lot of games down the road?

No, he could not have a game with 200+ yards & 3 TDs at the NFL level. Welker is not a big play receiver & never will be. He is Tom Waddle on a better team, or an updated version of Wayne Chrebet. Now he certainly could have a 10-catch game, no doubt. At his current YPC, 10 receptions would net him 110 yards. Sounds about right to me.

Exactly. This is the type of thing Im worried about. Im not a Pats fan but I do think they're that smart.

NO doubt that Welker will produce when needed, but I'm not sure the Pats will continue to rely on the passing game as heavily or on Welker as much. Thats the reason for trading him (I may be able to get Adrian Peterson for him, who Im high on too). The reason against is, well, a lock of 16 points from a WR isnt easy to find... and if he keeps up this pace, he's the perfect complement for the less consistent but high-potential WRs like Javon Walker...

Cant make up my mind.
