What about Betts to Green Bay? (1 Viewer)

This appears to be one writers opinion but he does say that there are whispers of this trade...

BY GERY WOELFEL

By now everybody in the universe has heard how the Packers may have some interest in Randy Moss, who currently ranks as the second-biggest headcase in the NFL behind Terrell Owens.

And you've heard how the Packers are contemplating signing a free-agent running back now that veteran Ahman Green has bolted to the Texans. You've also heard they may have interest in any of a boatload of RBS, all of whom have some warts i.e. Dominic Rhodes, Jamal Lewis, Corey Dillon, Chris Brown, etc. And, finally, you've heard the Packers are just going to wait until the NFL draft and pick Marshawn Lynch of Cal who by the way, also has off-field issues on his resume.

What you haven't probably heard, though, is the Packers may trade for a backup running back, albeit a pretty decent one. There are whispers the Packers have some interest in Ladell Betts of the Washington Redskins. Betts, 27, had a pretty non-descript pro career until last season when he stared the last seven games for Clinton Portis, who had a fractured hand.

Betts seized the opportunity and finished the season with 1,154 yards and a highly-respectable 4.7 yards per carry average. What's more, he proved to be a deft receiver, grabbing 53 passes for 445 yards.

Betts' ability to run and catch the ball makes him an appealing commodity for the Packers. He'd certainly be better than any of the other mentioned ones.

I thought I read that Gibbs is pretty set on going with a Portis/Betts RBBC this year and that Denver was interested in his services too. What kind of offer would the Skins be willing to take? What would the Pack be willing to give up? Thoughts?

Gibbs firmly believes you need two quality rbs on a team. They recently signed Betts to a contract extension. Betts wants to stay here and all the coaches like him. And last year, Gibbs gave up a 3rd round pick for TJ Duccket becasue he was concerned about his depth at rb.

Obviously if a blockbuster offer comes along, the Redkins will trade him, but that never happens. So the Redskins value Betts so highly that he is essentially untradeable.

 The optimal time for Betts to have been traded was in the last five days, before the multitude of FA RB's had signed with teams who then filled their needs at that position. Gibbs has made clear to everyone that Betts is not for sale.

I don't know why there hasn't been more of a Rhodes/Green Bay romance.

I also wonder if they'd have interest in Droughns after he gets cut.

I think Betts stays in DC.

I would love it if Betts signed with Green Bay. His running style is perfect for the zone blocking scheme.

Green Bay will likely end up with a Washington RB, only it will be Duckett, not Betts.

Duckett is fresh, played in the system they currently run and Green Bay looks to be on the verge of signing Justin Griffith. Makes a lot of sense to go after Duckett once things have cleared themselves up. Especially since there currently aren't any rumors circulating about Duckett at all so far.

I forgot about his contract extension. That seems to be the nail in the coffin on this rumor. It wouldn't make sense for them to part with him...much less for GB to take on his contract.

Twas fun to speculate as a GB fan and Betts owner though

Dunno, the 'Skins always appear to overpay when making deals. So, they probably would have to give Betts and the #6 to get the #12. :(
