On par with "expresso" in terms of aggravation.  But, take heart, they aren't just mispronouncing it, they're also misspelling it as "chipolte".

I remember reading something once about how mispronunciations can get in your head even when you know better (I think it was in the context of the Bin Laden mission, when lots of people were confusing "Osama" and "Obama"). An old friend of mine married a Czech woman named Vanda, and more than once I've slipped up and called her "Wanda" because that's just where my brain wants to go.

The combination of letters at the end of "chipotle" is not something most of us see very often (after all, what rhymes with chipotle?) plus the t and l next to each other look similar enough that one could easily transpose them. Once the incorrect version it gets stuck in your head, it may be hard to dislodge.

Anyway, those are my non-linguist layman's theories

Sometimes it depends on whether you hear it or see it written. In Vanda's case it was mostly verbal. Meanwhile, I have a nephew named Eli (EE-lie) but used to work with an Israeli guy named Eli (EH-lee). If I screwed up my coworker's name guaranteed it was because I had recently seen a written version and my mind went to the other pronunciation.

well... i know around these parts ppl prnounce it "Ash-phalt" but in general, no one ever say it. think i could probably count on 2 hands how many times ive heard someone use the word.... usually ppl stick w "pavement" as a generalization i feel

While I haven’t heard it pronounced the way the OP is mentioning—I’m not shocked to hear that it’s not super uncommon for it to be mispronounced.  I just think that it’s far more frequent to see words in the English language that have a letter sequence of “lte” in them versus a letter sequence of “tle”.   Could be that some people mispronounce it because of a built in familiarity of letter sequencing and sounds that they are predominantly used to in regards to the language.

I hear "black top" from laymen but in my profession iy is asphalt.
