What am I missing ? (1 Viewer)

I am completely confused by the overwhelming unanimous pre-season opinion that

Carolina LB Jon Beason ranks MUCH higher than Carolina LB James Anderson.

What am I missing?

2010

James Anderson - 130 total tackles, primarily as strong side LB

Jon Beason - 121 total tackles as middle LB

2011

James Anderson - 145 total tackles, primarily as strong side LB

Jon Beason - out after Week 1 with season ending injury

2012

James Anderson is again listed as strong side LB on team's depth chart.

Rookie Luke Kuechly is listed as the weak side LB.

I realize that Beason was really good prior to these seasons...

but why has everyone decided that Anderson will slump so much?

Is the Panthers' coaching staff stupid enough to dramatically diminish the role of

their leading tackler from the past two years (and single-season record-holder) ??

because anderson cleaned up when all their other lb got hurt, and as of now they have a full complement.

mlb tends to be more productive than slb, but you also want to watch and see which lb are on teh field for nickel/dime snaps, as well as who they're playing.

you'd expect beason to outproduce anderson, but he probably has more injury concern.

my vague recollection of 2010 was that beason moved over to wlb to fill in for davis.

Well for a few reasons:- Beason plays the middle

Before getting injured here are his tackle numbers >>>

2010 121 tackles

2009 141 tackles

1008 138 tackles

2007 140 tackles

those tackle numbers are consistent and solid

-Beason makes more big plays>>

- his first two years (2007-2009), zero sacks, the next two years when he was healthy he had 4 sacks

- he has 29 passes defensed and they all came in those first four years when he was healthy

- he has 8 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles

Anderson came in a year prior to Bason and he does have 8 sacks but spread out over 6 active seasons to Beason's 4 sacks over four active seasons and in the first two season Jon didn't rack up any sacks so the sack numbers indicate Beason and Anderson are even in applying pressure.

Anderson 17 passes defensed over his six active seasons compared to Beason's 29 in four active seasons

Anderson has 3 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles over six active seasons compared to 8 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles in Jon's four active seasons.

I don't think people believe Anderson will slump so much but where people realize Beason had better over-all stats than Anderson with a higher chance he'll make big plays.

Not a slam on Anderson, he should continue to post solid numbers but if people prefer Jon they have a good case too.
